fix(reader): recover compact Sequence fit after header reflow - #1151
A compact automatic Sequence can start while its header needs more height. When the header settles, the optional 12px bottom gap can leave the fit calculation just below the source-text floor. The reader then chooses an enlarged scrolling diagram although the original-size SVG still fits. At 1396×480, the reproduced stage ends at 626.5px, with the SVG ending at 557.5px.
Let that optional gap yield to the original text-size floor. Keep the measured body/stage/dock padding, horizontal limits and enlargement cap. Genuinely insufficient height and long sequences still scroll. The existing compact Sequence browser case now starts with a tall header, removes that temporary constraint and requires the first-screen fit to recover without resizing.
The maintainer agreed to this scope. The agreed integration order is #1150 first, then this PR. Rechecked all 129 open PR heads and the relevant Reader patches: none implements this behavior. #1150 separately fixes stale artifacts on the unchanged base. This PR changes Reader logic and regenerates the shared output paths from that new Viewer source. Its regression requires the runtime correction.
Contributor review
Problem origin: actual CI failure; controlled header-reflow reproduction matches its failing geometry.
I reviewed the submitted changes and explanation, understand their impact, and can answer questions about them.
Stability impact
Shared Viewer code, with the changed choice restricted to automatic Sequence. Explicit authored canvases, other diagram families, source SVG geometry, export geometry and text-size floors retain their existing contracts.
Test-value review extends the existing public render/Chrome regression rather than adding a parallel fixture suite. Assertions, tolerances, readiness and failure cleanup are retained; no retry or skip was added. Focused simplify-codebase review found no worthwhile state/lifecycle cut: Reader measurement and Chrome dock clearance still own different guarantees. The fix uses the existing gap constant and adds no state or abstraction.
Evidence route: fixed typed-input Viewer replay, including the existing print/presentation/export/resize cases. The maintainer accepted this bounded evidence route and requested no new five-project benchmark. No Agent authoring-speed or real-repository generation benefit is claimed.
Red/green: isolate the existing compact Sequence subtest plus the new header-reflow case. It fails against the exact base Viewer template and passes against the candidate. To replay the red case, apply only this PR's test file to the base and run the Reader browser suite below.
ARCHIFY_CHROME=/path/to/chrome npm run test:browser: 337 pass, 0 fail, 0 skipped.
npm run test:full, with optional Chrome unset to avoid duplicating the separate browser gate: 3539 pass, 0 fail, 134 conditional/browser/platform skips; generated checks pass.
git diff --check and canonical ZIP build pass. ZIP SHA-256: 73a7bd50575abc0f7c2dddb10704e2ae519d6df2efc8522842397e633a895733. Its embedded Viewer is byte-identical to the tested template.
The only change after the 337-case browser run refreshed the legacy examples/web-app.html Viewer script from the canonical template; its SVG and JSON data were verified unchanged. The full/generated run then passed on the complete 57-file candidate, and all candidate hashes were checked afterward.
Final-head CI completed success on this exact candidate: 17 successful jobs, with full-regression and both deployments omitted by normal scope. Both real Linux Chrome shards executed and passed, alongside Node 18/20/22/24 core/owned coverage, generated/ZIP checks, WebM and packaged CLI smoke on Linux/macOS/Windows. Windows path-portability steps were scope-skipped; they are not claimed as a native Windows test suite. Contributor personal review is confirmed; upstream review and integration remain pending.
Visual evidence
Replay ARCHIFY_CHROME=/path/to/chrome npm run test:browser -- test/reader-layout-browser.test.mjs, optionally setting ARCHIFY_READER_EVIDENCE for its captured screenshots and geometry records. The added case uses the existing compact fixture at 1396×480, Classic, dark, Still, camera 100%.
After recovery, the stage ends at 463px and the SVG retains 1× source text scale, with the same authored viewBox. Matched before/after captures were inspected: the complete diagram, original legend and controls fit; the base capture loses the lower stage/legend below the viewport. Contributor personal review, including the recorded visible outcomes, is confirmed.
Generated artifacts
Two authored files change: viewer/reader-layout.js and its existing browser test. The remaining 55 files are the required generated template, examples (including the legacy Viewer refresh), Gallery/manifest, Checkout comparison/receipt, recaptured README GIF/receipt and canonical archify.zip. Guide/Start inputs do not consume this Viewer source and remain unchanged. Generated conflicts with other PRs should be rebuilt from their combined source.
The maintainer merged #1150 into dev at 12b476771f81ad48da14946653dfbb8b5d347961. This branch now includes that base at b654981f9f660ac548a70332ebac68d4353b35f5, resolving the overlap in the four derived artifacts.
The complete tree 357cabe3b9c78e3e551747714ace643878e83d35 is identical to the previously qualified and personally reviewed e1ff91f8c752700250a8c6a77be25806e5cf0cc9 tree. No source, test, ZIP or generated-output byte changed. All four base-overlap files already have canonical counterparts generated for this PR's Viewer correction; those tested outputs are retained. The 57-file PR diff and its hashes are verified unchanged. Existing technical evidence and contributor confirmation therefore remain applicable to the identical files. CI run 40866312617 passed on this updated head: 17 successful jobs, no failures and three expected skips (the scope-selected full-regression lane and both deployments). Both browser shards and native Windows Node22/24 portability jobs executed and passed; these remain distinct from the reused 3539-test local full-suite result on the identical tree. This updates the contributor branch only; final upstream integration remains the maintainer's decision.

Local qualification on tree 9094e3a2047d6306ac6a8d2c7245b54d89a7d54c: generated/golden checks,19 core smoke cases,26 focused Sequence cases including Chrome, this PR's focused regression and clean-package smoke. The later integration of #1174 changes only the README GIF and receipt: the unchanged README/Gallery tests pass15 cases with one native Windows-only local skip on final tree 8927ba7523aebe9acec33dd85a9eab912f6f0710. The animation was recaptured from this PR's own Viewer artifacts. Source, tests and ZIP are unchanged by that second step. The earlier README freshness failures remain visible in the previous CI runs.
CI41175250007 passed on this exact public head: 17 successful jobs, 3 expected skips, no failures. The complete regression lane was skipped by the existing scope policy; it is not counted as executed. Windows path-test steps: (Node 22) skipped; (Node 24) skipped; skipped steps are not counted as native test execution. Deployment jobs were skipped. Summary
A tall header can trigger scrolling for an automatic compact Sequence that fits at its original text size after the header settles. The change lets the optional 12px bottom gap count toward the fit check, capped at maxWidth, and adds a regression test for recovery without resizing. It does not change authored canvases or other diagram families.
The reviewed diff is 847146a to 7b328e7. The author-reported tests and CI run refer to candidate e1ff91f; they are not evidence for the reviewed head. The current checkout is 769af16, which includes later unrelated changes. No CI result for that checkout was supplied. These are revision-specific snapshots. Browser or perceptual acceptance is not established.
Automatic sequence fitting now includes the ratio-scaled safe-bottom gap before applying the maxWidth cap. A browser test checks header-driven scrolling and layout recovery. The updated condition appears in gallery artifacts and embedded examples. Related artifact digests and byte counts are refreshed.
tt-a1i/archify#1150: It refreshes generated Checkout and README proof artifacts from Viewer templates; this change updates template behavior and associated generated artifacts.

Explanation
The PR describes the reproducible short-wide automatic Sequence failure, the intended recovery, and the preserved behavior for genuinely insufficient height and long sequences. It defines one focused Reader behavior change, identifies the compatibility boundary, and records the linked issue plus maintainer scope decision. The diff confirms that scope: one sequenceFits adjustment in viewer/reader-layout.js, its browser regression, and propagated generated artifacts. No schema, migration, rollout, or separate rollback plan is applicable.
Full details: Validation Evidence
Explanation
Validation evidence is sufficient for reviewed head 769af16 (base 63c9263). The source diff adds the SAFE_BOTTOM_GAP fit rule in viewer/reader-layout.js and the matching regression in test/reader-layout-browser.test.mjs. The test covers temporary header scrolling, recovery without a viewport resize, text scale, fit bounds, and preserved SVG geometry. The PR reports 337 browser passes and 3,539 full-test passes for candidate e1ff91f; it also reports successful final-head CI. The browser and full-test results are author-reported. The changed Viewer source and regression test are unchanged after e1ff91f, so those results remain applicable; later generated and upstream changes are covered by the reported final-head CI. Observed checks confirm generated freshness: the README GIF receipt matches the 836142-byte GIF, all three scene hashes match their artifacts, all 16 gallery artifact receipts match, the embedded gallery manifest equals docs/gallery/manifest.json, archify.zip contains the current template and renderer outputs, and the checkout receipt matches its artifact. Prior failure addressed: Commit 355ea38 refreshed the README proof after 7b328e7. At head 769af16, live-proof.json records cache-miss hash 28151cee..., which matches the current artifact; all three scene hashes and GIF bytes also match.

Integration note on the related #1143: its newer head 61247add43ccbda6ad7eab7edbcaeee809dd4805 adds a stage-budget width cap guarded by automaticSequence && !readingScroll, after the scrolling decision. This PR changes the fit decision itself and tests recovery from an initially scrolling state. By inspection, #1143's added cap does not execute while that regression remains in the scrolling branch.
The Reader file now overlaps, so the combined integration should retain the existing recovery/text-size/geometry regressions and rebuild affected outputs and the canonical ZIP, with final-head CI. The agreed #1150 → #1151 priority remains unchanged; no additional source change is needed here to answer this advisory reference.
Updated this contributor branch with the maintainer-merged #1150 base 12b4767; current head is b654981f9f660ac548a70332ebac68d4353b35f5. The complete tree is identical to the previously tested and personally reviewed candidate; its 57-file PR diff is unchanged. CI run 40866312617 passed: 17 successful jobs, no failures and 3 expected skips. The recorded personal review still covers the unchanged submitted code. This PR is ready for review; upstream integration remains the maintainer’s decision.

Problem and value
The short-wide Sequence failure in #1147's browser shard is reproducible independently of that PR's repository-link change.
