feat(storage): encodings and failure details in the storage contract - #67
Conversation
So a TypeScript worker can use RunnerQ Cloud's hosted storage (which speaks this contract) with its own semantics: - QueuedActivity.Serialization and ActivityResult.Serialization: the payload's or result's encoding; empty is plain JSON (json-v1), all Go writes and all Go callers see. Postgres stores them in runnerq_inputs and runnerq_results and returns them with claims and results. - FailureKind.Details: a structured account of a failure, kept in the error result and its events as "failure", as the TypeScript SDK does. - EncodedStorage (optional): DequeueBatchEncoded claims inputs in the encodings the caller reads (plain claims stay json-v1 only); AckSuccessEncoded and SignalActivityEncoded carry the encoding the plain calls can't. Identical retries reconcile only in the same encoding. All fields are omitempty, so nothing changes on the wire for Go.

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius. 📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughStorage contracts and PostgreSQL operations now carry serialization identifiers for activity inputs and results. Encoded worker methods support dequeue, success acknowledgement, and signal delivery. Failure details can be validated and included in failure results and events. Conductor and query output can expose the plain-JSON portion of SuperJSON data. ChangesPostgreSQL storage

`AckFailure` changes activity state, or propagate any marshal error from
`toDetail` so the transaction cannot commit a failure without its details. Use
`withFailure` to locate the detail-recording path and preserve the existing
behavior for empty details.
- Around line 831-835: Update the serialization handling that builds `reads`
from `serializations`: normalize empty entries to `json-v1`, but do not include
`json-v1` unless the caller supplied it or an empty entry normalizes to it. An
empty `serializations` list must produce no claimed encodings.

Queries (payload and result includes, step data) and results.get read a
superjson-v1 value as its "json" part, so the console shows a hosted
TypeScript activity's data rather than SuperJSON's {json, meta} wrapper.
…re details - DequeueBatchEncoded claims exactly the encodings the caller lists (an empty entry is plain JSON); none claims nothing. It no longer adds json-v1 implicitly. - AckFailure rejects FailureKind.Details that isn't JSON (invalid argument) before changing anything, instead of recording the failure without its message and details.

630-632: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winTest the empty encoding list with a pending activity.
The encoded claim takes the only queued activity. The nil-serialization assertion then runs with no pending activity, so it can pass even if
DequeueBatchEncodedincorrectly claims an available activity whenserializationsis empty. Enqueue another encoded activity before this assertion, then verify that the assertion leaves it unclaimed.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

RunnerQ Cloud's hosted storage (
storaged) speaks this storage contract. The next step is a TypeScript storage adapter (runnerq/cloud-storage-ts) that maps the TypeScript SDK's storage onto it. Two things the TypeScript SDK stores had nowhere to go:superjson-v1, which keeps dates, maps, BigInts and so on;Without them, hosted TypeScript would be limited to plain JSON and would lose failure diagnostics. This adds both, additively.

QueuedActivity.Serialization,ActivityResult.Serialization: the encoding. Empty means plain JSON (json-v1), which is all Go writes, and it's what Go callers keep seeing.storage.SerializationJSONnames it.FailureKind.Details: kept in the error result asfailure, and on the Failed, Retrying and DeadLetter events, the same way the TypeScript SDK stores it.omitempty, so the wire JSON is unchanged for Go.EncodedStorage(optional interface)It covers the calls whose arguments can't carry an encoding:
DequeueBatchEncoded(..., serializations): claims inputs in the encodings the caller reads. The plainDequeueandDequeueBatchstill claimjson-v1only (feat(postgres): payloads in runnerq_inputs, the TypeScript SDK's schema #66), so Go workers never get an input they can't read.AckSuccessEncoded(..., result, serialization, workerID).SignalActivityEncoded(..., payload, serialization).Postgres
