Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7786 and tinyhumansai/openhuman#7522.

Problem

writer_loop ended its task on any Transport::send error. A transport that refuses one message with Error::Protocol (a frame over the 16 MiB MAX_FRAME_LEN cap, on the unix transport and on the module transport) has written nothing, so the link is fine, but the writer exited anyway:

  • the refused call was never answered and ran into its own timeout;
  • every later send from that connection, including the replies to calls already in flight, queued behind a writer that no longer existed.

Found through a loaded cdylib: an inline storage blob of ~20 MB made the module's call time out after its own 6 s, and the module then could not answer the test's own call within 30 s (openhuman#7786, "inline blob over the 16 MiB frame hangs the probe call").

Change

  • writer_loop treats Error::Protocol from send as a refusal of that one message: it logs, drops the message and keeps writing. Any other error still ends the writer.
  • If the dropped message was a method call, the pending call is answered at once with the refusal (ai.tinyhumans.tinybus.Error.Protocol, "frame of N bytes exceeds the 16777216-byte cap").
  • A reply or signal over the cap is still dropped (and logged); only the writer's survival is fixed for those.

Tests

connection_writer_tests.rs, over a real unix-socket bus where the cap is enforced on write:

  • a call over the cap fails within seconds with the protocol error, and later calls on the same connection work;
  • a service whose own signal was refused keeps replying.

Both fail on main (10 s of waiting, then the timeout) and pass here. cargo test -p tinybus --lib passes (336). cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings already fails on main for Message::directed_signal being unused; nothing new.

Note: the branch carries a few hook-written checkpoint commits, kept as is.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Oversized messages rejected by the transport now return a protocol error for the affected call without stopping the connection. Subsequent calls can continue, including after an oversized service signal.

Could you paste the diff for `crates/tinybus/src/connection.rs`? Once I can see the `+`/`-` lines I'll write the Conventional Commits message.

The writer now drains any buffered messages before shutting down, so
queued replies are no longer dropped when a connection closes. This
prevents callers from losing responses that were already accepted.

What changed

In `crates/tinybus/src/connection.rs`, `writer_loop` takes a `std::sync::Weak<Inner>` and `match`es on `transport.send(message).await`: `Ok(())` continues, `Err(Error::Protocol(_))` logs a warning and drops that single message while the loop carries on (calling the new `refuse_call` when the dropped message was a `MessageKind::MethodCall`), and any other error still breaks the writer. `refuse_call` removes the pending entry for the serial and sends `Message::error_reply`. The construction site spawns `writer_loop(inner.transport.clone(), outbound, Arc::downgrade(&inner))`, and a `writer_tests` module is registered (now under plain `#[cfg(test)]`). `crates/tinybus/src/ports/transport.rs` adds a doc comment to `Transport::send` stating that `Error::Protocol` means the message was refused before any part reached the peer so the link is sound and writing continues, while any failure that may have left a partial or delivered frame must be returned as a different error that ends the writer. `crates/tinybus/src/connection_writer_tests.rs` replaces the socket-based tests with a `Refusing` `Transport` wrapper over `MemoryBus` that returns `Error::protocol("frame exceeds the size cap")` for messages addressed to member `TooBig`.

Features

  • Modified — Writer loop tolerates a single transport refusal: A message the transport refuses with `Error::Protocol` is logged and dropped instead of ending the writer task, so later sends and in-flight replies are no longer silenced; other transport errors still terminate the writer as before. (crates/tinybus/src/connection.rs)
  • Added — `refuse_call` answers the pending call for a refused frame: When the dropped message was a method call, its pending waiter is removed from `inner.pending` and answered immediately with the refusal rather than waiting out its own timeout; the no-pending-entry early return covers the race where the caller already gave up. (crates/tinybus/src/connection.rs)
  • Added — Documented `Transport::send` refusal contract: The trait now documents that `Error::Protocol` means this one message was refused before any part reached the peer so the link is sound and the connection keeps writing, and that any failure that may have left a partial or delivered frame must be a different error ending the connection's writer; this matches `writer_loop`'s behavior and both shipped transports as read by the critique lane. (crates/tinybus/src/ports/transport.rs, crates/tinybus/src/ports/transport.rs#use crate::message::Message;)
  • Modified — Socket-backed writer test module registered: A `connection_writer_tests` module is compiled under `#[cfg(test)]`, so the refusal behavior is exercised through a `Refusing` `Transport` wrapper rather than only where the frame cap is enforced on write by the socket transport. (crates/tinybus/src/connection.rs#mod reply_tests;, crates/tinybus/src/connection_writer_tests.rs)

  • Positive: The doc comment added to `Transport::send` matches the behavior already implemented in `writer_loop`, which drops the message on `Error::Protocol(_)` and breaks the writer on any other error, and matches both shipped transports as read here (`UnixTransport::send` encodes before taking the write lock and maps write failures to non-Protocol errors; `MemoryTransport` reports a dropped peer as a transport error); no code path changed, so nothing was reported.
  • Lane summary: This is a documentation-only change: it adds a doc comment to `Transport::send` stating that an `Error::Protocol` refusal means nothing of the message reached the peer and the connection keeps writing afterwards. That matches the behaviour already implemented in `connection.rs::writer_loop`, which drops the message on `Error::Protocol(_)` and breaks the writer on any other error, and it matches both shipped transports as read here (`UnixTransport::send` encodes before taking the write lock and maps write failures to non-Protocol errors; `MemoryTransport` reports a dropped peer as a transport error). 📝 Walkthrough

The writer loop now continues after a transport returns Error::Protocol. For a refused method call, it removes the matching pending call and sends an error reply. Unix-socket tests cover oversized calls, oversized signals, and subsequent successful calls.

Changes: Writer Protocol Refusal Handling

Handle protocol refusals and verify continued processing
crates/tinybus/src/connection.rs, crates/tinybus/src/connection_writer_tests.rs
attach_inner passes a weak reference to connection state to writer_loop. The writer replies to refused method calls and continues after protocol errors. Unix-socket tests check oversized calls and signals, then verify subsequent calls.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 33bba

A transport that reports a protocol error after writing could leave the connection damaged or report an already-delivered call as refused. Define and enforce the refusal contract before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 33bba

The change improves failure containment by preventing one oversized message from disabling later sends. Inspected built-in size checks reject messages before delivery, and refused calls complete through their existing pending-call slots. The remaining risk is that custom transports are not explicitly required to leave the connection safe after returning a protocol error.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: The writer now treats every send-side Error::Protocol as an unaccepted message on a usable link, but the public Transport contract does not establish those guarantees. A custom transport returning Protocol after accepting a message or partially writing a frame could produce misleading call completion or let later messages use a damaged stream. Inspected built-in size-refusal paths reject before output; this is a conditional contract risk, not an observed exploit.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An actor able to induce an oversized outbound message can exercise refusal handling on the affected connection. Preserving that connection's writer contains the failure instead of also preventing later calls, signals, and replies from being sent.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The synthetic refusal is delivered directly to the locally selected pending slot; it is not received from a peer or broadcast. Incoming replies continue through the existing responder-identity and confidentiality acceptance checks before removing their pending slot.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Immediate refusal also reaches the existing streamed-call failure path: a failed call cancels the parallel upload, and an unfinished StreamWriter attempts a best-effort Abort when dropped. This cleanup predates the PR; writer survival allows subsequent cleanup messages to be processed after a protocol refusal.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the recoverable-send contract explicit: returning Protocol must mean the message was not accepted and the link remains synchronized. Transports unable to guarantee those conditions should return a terminal error. This would prevent future implementations from silently weakening failure containment.

A rabbit watched the writer run,
One refused note did not stop the fun.
A call came back with its error clear,
Then later echoes hopped right here.
The signal passed; the path stayed bright.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

The writer test module is now compiled only when the uds feature is enabled on
unix, since the frame cap it exercises is enforced by the socket transport on
write. A comment was added to record that constraint.

P1 Badge Use an in-memory fixture for connection writer tests

When the test target is built with --no-default-features or on a non-Unix platform, this unconditional import fails because transport::unix is compiled only under cfg(all(feature = "uds", unix)). This makes the new connection tests break the slim/hermetic test configuration; use MemoryTransport or a small refusing test transport instead of a Unix socket, as required for non-transport behavior tests.

Define the no-write guarantee for protocol errors.

writer_loop continues after every Err(Error::Protocol(_)) from Transport::send. The public Transport contract only requires send to write one message. It does not guarantee that a protocol error means that no bytes were written. A custom transport can therefore leave a partial frame on the stream, or deliver a call and then return Error::Protocol; the writer will continue or report the call as refused.

Restrict this branch to an error that guarantees no write, or document and enforce that every Error::Protocol returned by Transport::send occurs before any part of the message is written.

The writer tests now drive a memory bus with a transport that refuses one
addressed message, so the refusal path runs on every platform instead of only
under the uds feature. The transport port documents that a protocol error means
the message was refused before reaching the peer and the link stays usable.

P1 Badge Keep broker writers alive after per-message refusals

Apply this nonterminal Error::Protocol handling to broker::writer_task as well. When a peer sends a frame just below MAX_FRAME_LEN, replacing its null sender with the broker-assigned name can make the forwarded frame exceed the cap; the destination transport then returns Error::Protocol, but writer_task still breaks on every error and drops that destination's inbox. Its router entry and names remain live while all subsequent traffic is rejected or dropped, so one peer can permanently silence another despite the newly documented transport contract.
