Summary

In production, installed apps can't load modules because the directory-permission check refuses installs that are actually safe. On OpenHuman 0.64.x, Langfuse shows 18 of the last 100 web_search_tool calls failing with:

module 'tinysearch' could not be loaded from the installer bundle: module `macos-15-arm64` refused: module directory is writable by another user

The same failure shows up for windows-2022-x86_64 and ubuntu-22.04-x86_64. The same refusal blocks tinymemory (Sentry CORE-RUST-35W, CORE-RUST-365). A refused installer bundle is terminal, so the feature stays unavailable even after a restart.

Root causes

  1. macOS /Applications is root:admin 0775. check_directory walks every parent directory and refused any group-writable one. So every module bundled in an app installed the normal way was refused.
  2. The release cache was created under the process umask. With the common desktop umask 002, create_dir_all makes ~/.cache/<host>/modules/... 0775, and the gate then refuses the cache it just filled.
  3. A bundle refused for its location was terminal. The "installer bundle is authoritative" rule protects against a tampered bundle. But a permission refusal says nothing about the bytes.

Changes

  • unix_directory_refusal no longer refuses group write on a root-owned directory whose group is root-equivalent: gid 0, or macOS admin (gid 80). Members of those groups can already act as root. World write without the sticky bit, other groups, and other owners are still refused.
  • Release-cache directories are created 0700 (create_private_dir_all). Before each load, secure_release_cache removes group/other write from cache directories this user owns: from install_root down, plus install_root's parents strictly inside $HOME. It never touches $HOME itself, anything outside it, or another account's directories.
  • load_first_admitted falls through to the release cache only when every bundled candidate was refused for placement (is_placement_refusal: writable or owned by another user). The cache copy is held to the same compiled digest. A digest mismatch, a bad marker or an unloadable library in the bundle is still reported as before, with no fallback.

Not in this PR

The Windows ACL check (windows_path_grants_untrusted_write) also produces this refusal; it accounts for 13 of the failures. It probably needs to skip inherit-only ACEs and trust TrustedInstaller, but that needs a Windows repro first. Until then, the placement fallback above gets Windows users working: their bundle refusal now falls through to a verified download into %LOCALAPPDATA%.

Tests

On real Linux, macOS and Windows runners (CI modules job)

host_admission_tests.rs runs the gate against each runner's real filesystem, not against made-up mode bits:

  • a_bundle_others_can_write_falls_back_to_the_verified_release_cache reproduces the production failure end to end. The bundle directory is opened to other accounts (Unix 0777; Windows icacls /grant Everyone:M), the gate refuses it for placement, and the same pinned release loads from the verified cache. Runs on ubuntu, macOS and Windows.
  • a_private_directory_this_user_created_is_admitted: the premise the cache relies on, on all three OSes.
  • the_real_macos_applications_directory_is_admitted runs check_directory("/Applications") on the macOS runner.
  • release_cache_directories_are_private_under_a_permissive_umask sets umask 002, stages a cache, and asserts the directories are owner-only and admitted. It runs in its own single-threaded step on Linux and macOS, because umask is process-wide.

New CI steps: "Directory admission (Unix)", "Release cache under a permissive umask (Unix)", and an admission_tests run appended to the Windows real-loader step, which already provides a private-ACL TEMP.

Unit

  • a_bundle_refused_only_for_its_location_falls_back_to_the_release_cache: fails on d3a9f31, passes here.
  • the_release_cache_is_repaired_to_owner_only_write_before_it_is_used: fails on d3a9f31, passes here.
  • a_bundle_refused_for_its_content_is_still_authoritative: guards the existing tamper rule.
  • the_macos_applications_directory_is_accepted, a_root_owned_directory_writable_by_a_root_group_is_accepted, group_write_by_an_ordinary_group_is_still_refused, world_write_without_sticky_is_refused_even_for_root_groups.
  • cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -D warnings, cargo test --all-features (409 passed), cargo check --no-default-features: all green on macOS. I couldn't cross-check Windows locally (ring won't cross-build), so the cfg(not(unix)) paths rely on CI.

Commits are auto-commit checkpoints; this description is the real change log.

Needed as a hotfix for OpenHuman release (0.64.x).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Release-cache directories are now created with restrictive permissions on Unix, and eligible existing cache directories are secured before modules are loaded.
    • When a bundled module is refused because its location has unsafe ownership or permissions, loading can continue from the release cache. Other bundle errors, including invalid module contents, still stop loading.
    • Module directory admission now accounts for ownership, permissions, and sticky-bit settings across supported platforms.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Module admission now applies updated Unix directory permission rules. Cache staging creates private Unix directories, and eligible cache directories are secured before loading. The loader can use a release-cache candidate when bundled candidates fail only for placement reasons.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 13815

The new tests may not exercise the intended fallback paths on macOS because of the temp directory symlink. Production behavior is not affected, so this is a small fix to make before or soon after merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 13815

Repairing cache permissions does not establish that previously writable module contents are authentic. In affected legacy caches, modified modules could become eligible to execute with the host’s authority. Concurrent filesystem replacement can also redirect permission changes outside the cache.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Permission repair can promote previously untrusted extraction contents into executable code. If another account could modify a user-owned extraction before repair, it can leave the pinned archive intact while replacing the library and removing or rewriting modules.toml. The new loader removes directory write permissions and then reuses that extraction without proving it came from the archive. The base refused the permissive placement; the head can reach native loading. Private legacy staging limits exposure, so merely having a writable cache ancestor is insufficient to establish this attack.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The new permission repair does not bind mutation to the inspected directory object. A local actor able to replace a component in a still-writable parent can race symlink_metadata and set_permissions, redirecting the latter to another object writable by the host account. Applying a cached directory mode such as 0755 to a private file or directory can broaden read or traversal access, despite the operation’s intended write-removal purpose. Static symlink rejection, UID checks, and lexical cache bounds do not close this race.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A successful extraction-substitution attack reaches native execution with the affected host process’s operating-system authority, including its accessible data and credentials. The permission-repair race can affect other objects that account may chmod. These paths require local filesystem access; remote or cross-tenant reachability is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An actor with write access to an existing extraction can preserve the legitimate archive, substitute module bytes, and remove or update the editable allowlist. Repair then closes directory write access without removing that prior modification, potentially allowing the substituted module through admission.
  • inferred — An actor controlling a writable parent can replace a checked directory with a symlink before pathname-based permission mutation. The operation may then apply the checked directory’s mode to a different private object, potentially exposing it or disrupting its access controls.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Fallback still supplies the compiled archive pin and respects allow_download. Content refusals do not match the placement classifier. Cache module paths must resolve inside their cache directory, and Unix file admission uses a no-follow open. These controls constrain substitution but do not authenticate previously modified extraction contents after repair.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Permission repair is best-effort: it skips observed symlinks, non-directories, foreign-owned directories, and sticky directories, and logs mutation failures. Subsequent admission still checks placement, but that check does not undo permission changes already made.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Treat a formerly writable extraction as untrusted during repair. Rebuild it in private staging from the verified archive, or authenticate extracted contents and their allowlist against archive-bound metadata before permitting execution.
  • proposed — Bind permission repair to opened directory objects, reject symlink traversal through each component, and perform ownership checks and permission mutation on the same object. Avoid applying a mode captured from one object to a newly resolved pathname.

Host modules now gate incoming calls through an admission check before
dispatching them, letting a host reject or defer work when it is
overloaded. Tests cover the new admission paths alongside the existing
host behaviour.

The lazy library test helper now takes the library stem as an argument so
callers can write distinct artifacts into the bundle and cache directories,
avoiding collisions when both are populated in the same test. A nested path
construction was also reformatted for readability.

The Unix and Windows CI jobs now run the admission tests against the
runner's real filesystem and ACLs, so the fallback to the verified
release cache is exercised outside the mocked paths. The permissive
umask test runs alone because umask is process-wide, and the private
directory test resolves the tempdir through its real path so the
admission check sees the actual location.

  • Lane summary: The change widens directory admission (macOS root:admin group-write acceptance, sticky-bit handling), adds a placement-only fallback to the verified release cache, and repairs a permissively-created cache before use — and the behavioural changes are well covered: new unit tests pin the group-write matrix per platform, new unix tests distinguish placement from content refusals and assert the cache is tightened to owner-only write, and ignored admission tests exercise the real gate on every OS in CI. The macOS admin-group relaxation is a documented judgement call with its reasoning in the code and a test asserting it. P1 Badge Rebuild previously writable caches before trusting them

When a legacy cache was created as 0775 and another group member modified its extracted library before the next launch, this call merely removes the write bits and then treats the cache as trusted. find_verified hashes the untouched archive but does not derive the extraction from it; an attacker can replace the library and remove or rewrite modules.toml, after which the tightened directory passes admission and the malicious library is loaded with the archive's compiled-in digest as its attestation. Purge and re-extract such caches from the verified archive rather than rehabilitating their permissions in place.

Avoid following a swapped symlink during permission repair

symlink_metadata verifies that directory is an owned directory, but set_permissions(directory, ...) resolves the path again. Another process can replace that directory with a symlink between these calls, causing the chmod to apply to the symlink target rather than the checked cache directory. This contradicts the stated guarantee that the function never touches anything outside the cache or a directory owned by another account. Use a descriptor/fchmod-style operation or otherwise perform the check and permission update without reopening the path.

Normalize paths before checking the cache boundary

starts_with compares path components lexically and does not resolve ... For example, with install_root = /tmp/cache and dir = /tmp/cache/../shared, the first ancestor passes starts_with(install_root) even though it resolves to /tmp/shared; the next ancestor /tmp/cache/.. also passes and resolves to /tmp. tighten_owned_directory then changes permissions outside the cache without any race being required. Validate the path using normalized components (while preserving the separate symlink-race fix) before deciding which ancestors are in scope.

Canonicalize temporary roots in both admission tests.

On macOS, tempfile::tempdir() can produce a path under the /var symlink. check_directory rejects that ancestor as a non-directory component. This reason is not in PLACEMENT_REFUSALS, so the first test reports a terminal installer-bundle failure instead of exercising cache fallback. The content test can pass for the same wrong reason.

Suggested fix
     let host = ModuleHost::new(Broker::new());
     let bundled = tempfile::tempdir().unwrap();
     let user_cache = tempfile::tempdir().unwrap();
-    let dir = marked_bundle(bundled.path());
+    let bundled_root = std::fs::canonicalize(bundled.path()).unwrap();
+    let cache_root = std::fs::canonicalize(user_cache.path()).unwrap();
+    let dir = marked_bundle(&bundled_root);
     std::fs::set_permissions(&dir, std::fs::Permissions::from_mode(0o777)).unwrap();

     let assets = [ASSET];
     let error = load_first_admitted(
         &host,
-        &plan(&assets, user_cache.path(), Some(bundled.path())),
+        &plan(&assets, &cache_root, Some(&bundled_root)),
         &serde_json::json!({}),
     )

Apply the same root canonicalization and plan arguments in a_bundle_refused_for_its_content_is_still_authoritative.
