fix(claude_code): surface structured stdout errors on nonzero exit - #363
Conversation
The driver now prefers the CLI's structured stdout error message over stderr when a turn exits nonzero, since most failures such as bad auth or unknown models are reported there with stderr left empty. Messages are sanitized to redact the configured API key and any sk- tokens, and are bounded in length. The event mapper also treats is_error=true results as failures and carries the human-readable reason through. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a test asserting that a result event flagged as an error surfaces its result text as the mapper's error, guarding the mapping against regressions. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The recorded line counts for the claude code driver debt entries were stale after the files grew, and a new entry was added for driver_tests.rs. The boundary test now matches the current sources instead of failing on the shifted line numbers. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Tiny Sweeper reviewThis PR makes the claude_code driver surface the CLI's structured stdout error on nonzero exits instead of relying on often-empty stderr, with secret redaction (configured API key and sk- tokens) and a 2 KiB length cap on the stdout paths. Earlier findings about sanitizing structured stdout errors on both nonzero and zero exits are addressed with tests that would fail on regression. One finding remains active across lanes: the stderr fallback in nonzero_exit_message is still emitted raw — neither redacted, sk--scrubbed, nor bounded — so a credential or oversized dump on stderr still reaches the returned error. State: Ready for maintainer review Review snapshot
Completeness: Complete What changedWhen the claude CLI exits nonzero, the driver now prefers a sanitized structured stdout error (via sanitize_cli_message and nonzero_exit_message) and falls back to stderr only when stdout carried none — but that stderr fallback remains raw and unbounded. The event mapper captures the human-readable reason from result events with is_error=true, and the successful-exit is_error bail is sanitized too. Features

The stream parser only read the error field when it was a plain string, so error events whose payload is an object fell back to a generic message and lost the real reason. It now also looks inside the object's message field, and a driver test confirms the surfaced text is still redacted. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Read failure details from the result errors array
When Claude returns a failed result with diagnostics only in errors—for example, error_during_execution or error_max_turns—this probes only result and replaces the real reason with the generic subtype message. The official ResultMessage contract exposes errors and specifically documents execution-error reasons there (Claude Agent SDK reference); on a nonzero exit, that generic value is then preferred over even a useful stderr message. Extract and sanitize the nonempty errors entries before using the generic fallback.

Resolve conflicts with #360 (stale-session recovery) and #363 (stdout errors): keep both sides' tests, move remove_if into SessionStore so it uses the delivered-turn store's locking and persistence, and have it drop the thread's delivered-turn record with the mapping (a replacement session has received nothing). Add a regression test for that and refresh the dependency_boundary line baseline. Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
What
When the
claudeCLI exits nonzero,run_turnbailed withexit <code> stderr=<stderr>before looking at the structured error the CLI had printed on stdout. Most CLI failures (bad auth, unknown model, invalid session) put the reason on stdout and leave stderr empty, so the caller sawexit Some(1) stderr=.result/errormessage when there is one, sanitized (configured API key andsk-tokens redacted) and bounded to 2 KiB.
