Brief Description of Changes

VideoViewer.CanHandle ran a full MediaInfo.Open() on every file not claimed by a higher-priority plugin. For unknown binaries MediaInfo scans the whole file for sync words (headerless formats such as MPEG-TS or raw MP3), e.g. reading 470 MB to reject an 85 MB .etl, which froze the UI thread for seconds on a spinning disk.

  • Files with a well-known media extension keep the full parse. Anything else is first probed through the MediaInfo buffer API with a 4 MB read budget (honouring its seek requests); only if audio or video is found is the full Open() performed, so media with unusual extensions still previews.
  • The bounded probe uses its own MediaInfo handle: calling Open() on a handle previously fed through the buffer API crashes with an uncatchable AccessViolationException.
  • Parse only media headers (ParseSpeed=0). Only header fields are used (format, dimensions, rotation, tags, cover, lyrics), but the default parse speed also samples the stream, reading tens of MB per file (56 MB for a 14.5 GB movie). ParseSpeed=0 returns the same fields reading 0.15-1.5 MB.

Related Issue (if any)

None.

Additional Notes

Builds cleanly against current master (MSBuild, Release). No automated tests; the read sizes above were measured on a spinning disk.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • QuickLook can now recognize eligible video and audio files by their contents when their file extensions aren’t recognized. These files can be opened for preview without relying solely on their extension.
    • Files with known media extensions continue to be recognized directly.

- Files with a well-known media extension keep the full parse. Anything
else is first probed through the MediaInfo buffer API with a 4 MB read

- The bounded probe uses its own MediaInfo handle: calling Open() on a
handle that was previously fed through the buffer API crashes with an
AccessViolationException, which cannot be caught and takes down the
  whole process.

Walkthrough

The video viewer now probes files with unrecognized extensions through MediaInfo before full parsing. The probe reads up to 4 MiB and accepts files that MediaInfo identifies as containing video or audio.

Changes: Media detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and run the media probe
QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.VideoViewer/Plugin.cs
The plugin uses a separate MediaInfo handle to probe files with unrecognized extensions. The probe reads at most 4 MiB, honors requested seek positions, and accepts files when MediaInfo reports video or audio.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 5d5a9

After the first unknown-extension media file is previewed, later large non-media files can again trigger the full MediaInfo scan and freeze the UI. Reset the probe handle before each probe, for example by calling Close() first, then merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5d5a9

The change generally reduces work on unfamiliar files without adding a new caller or increasing plugin privileges. The main remaining uncertainty is whether the reused probe handle reliably isolates successive files, including after failures.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed parsing remains within the preview application's existing selected-file processing path. No additional caller, cross-service dependency, or increase in plugin authority was established by the comparison.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — File content can influence native parsing and probe acceptance. A stale positive probe result could defeat the intended early rejection and reach MediaInfo.Open, but arbitrary files already reached that operation before this PR. This does not establish newly expanded attack reachability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected host path checks file existence and extension filtering before plugin selection. VideoViewer then applies content classification; its extension list chooses a parsing strategy rather than granting additional authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Message-driven invoke, switch, toggle, and reload operations are dispatched through the UI dispatcher. This is counterevidence to a reachable concurrent-probe failure; the absence of a lock alone does not establish a new concurrency vulnerability.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the per-file probe reset boundary explicit, including exceptional cleanup, without resetting state during seeks within the same file. Preserve the separation between buffer-mode and file-opening handles.

Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Reset the probe handle between files.

If one unknown-extension file contains media, the static _probeMediaInfo retains its stream metadata after OpenBufferFinalize(). OpenBufferInit() does not clear that metadata. A later non-media file can therefore inherit a non-empty Format, pass ProbeIsMedia, and trigger the unbounded _mediaInfo.Open(path) call. This restores the UI-freeze path after the first successful probe. Use a fresh probe handle per file, or safely close and reset the probe handle before each new file. The version-matched wrapper forwards these calls directly, and MediaInfoLib clears stored streams in Close(). (raw.githubusercontent.com)
