Fixes#683. check-render-output now fails closed when bounded crossing inspection cannot finish, rather than treating an incomplete result as a pass. It reports which budget was exhausted and supplies the matching rerun knob.
Scope and non-goals
This is a focused checker and recovery-contract change. It does not change renderer routing, weaken crossing detection, or make a general performance claim for arbitrary SVG.
Bounds and compatibility
The two default limits are 50,000 eligible relationship pairs and 3,000,000 inner segment-pair comparisons. The latter is the smallest tested default that preserves the existing 11x11 dense deliver and finalize receipt fixtures; explicit environment overrides still allow tighter limits.
The checked-in stress helper creates 120 relationships with 100 supported orthogonal segments each. On Node v22.23.2 it stops fail-closed after exactly 3,000,000 segment-pair checks (301 relationship pairs) in 9.81 seconds, rather than presenting incomplete analysis as a pass. This is a deliberately pathological raw SVG, not a claim about normal generated diagrams.
Validation
Focused public CLI checks covered dense deliver, near-limit finalize, and both budget-specific recovery diagnostics.
Official Node v22.23.2 / bundled zlib 1.3.1-e00f703 rebuilt archify.zip twice to identical SHA-256 B08B22D1E1C844BEBBB37DB147A840B92383F26E33FFF28F42D8D6B0671A29CE.
Current-head CI: run 40072277920. Compatibility, ZIP freshness, package, Windows, browser, WebM, and the full-regression shard containing both dense receipt cases pass.
The other full-regression shard is red only for the existing README motion proofsignal-flow showcase digest drift (b721... expected versus 5fa3... actual). It is outside this checker/ZIP change and is not altered here.
Generated artifacts
archify.zip is refreshed from the final source. The stress fixture is a test helper, not a shipped example.

📝 Summary
Crossing analysis fails closed at 50,000 relationship pairs or 3,000,000 segment-pair comparisons. Users can raise either limit through its environment variable. The reviewed base and head are reported as 744d8e10 and debee878; this checkout does not contain the reported head. The author reports that maintained dense fixtures pass at the final defaults. Earlier test and archive evidence applies to e7ae6a18, not this head. The supplied record reports CI run 40072277920 at debee878: one regression shard failed on README motion proof digest drift. The stress result shows bounded early termination, not a general speedup.
The checker now limits crossing analysis to 50,000 relationship pairs and 3,000,000 segment pairs by default. Positive safe-integer environment values override these limits; missing, empty, or invalid values use the defaults. If either limit is reached, the checker reports incomplete analysis as a composition error and fails the relationship-crossings check. Diagnostics include attempted comparison counts and guidance for the applicable environment setting. Tests cover both limits through the checker and public CLIs.

The implementation fits one focused checker behavior: the diff adds bounded crossing analysis, fail-closed diagnostics, recovery guidance, focused tests, and refreshed artifacts, and the PR links issue #683. The latest description still omits required PR disclosures. It does not state AI use, tools/model, accountable contributor, problem origin, or human-review confirmation. It does not name ARCHIFY_CHECK_MAX_CROSSING_PAIR_CHECKS and ARCHIFY_CHECK_MAX_CROSSING_SEGMENT_PAIR_CHECKS, and it records neither the reviewed base 10b4dd5c5f2264baa315ee65a9b4cc23c13ea5f0 nor head 5ba198fd8d4a74b5abb3a5fd29f9925cb426f5f7. These requirements are in CONTRIBUTING.md:31 and 43-53 and .github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md:9-19 and 28-32.
Resolution
Update the PR description with the completed AI assistance and accountability fields, including “none” if applicable; state the problem origin and human review; name both environment variables; and record the tested comparison base and candidate head revisions.
Full details: Validation Evidence
Explanation
Material validation gaps remain on evaluated head 5ba198fd8d4a74b5abb3a5fd29f9925cb426f5f7 against base 10b4dd5c5f2264baa315ee65a9b4cc23c13ea5f0. Source inspection confirms the 50,000 relationship-pair and 3,000,000 segment-pair limits, fail-closed diagnostics, CLI guidance forwarding, added stress fixture, and that the archived checker and CLI sources match the working sources. However, collectRelationshipCrossings still enumerates each nested relationship candidate before the shared-endpoint continue at lines 782-789; attemptedPairs increments only afterward. For 318 relationships this is 50,403 candidate iterations, and no added test or reported measurement bounds this path. The override test covers empty and invalid values plus 1, but does not test an unset variable or a higher valid safe integer. The PR body reports focused checks, stress timing, CI run 40072277920, and archive freshness, but these remain author reports without exact current-head commands, environment, and results in the body; the disclosed unrelated regression is not treated as a pass.
Resolution
Bound shared-endpoint candidate enumeration with the crossing work budget, or provide direct current-head evidence that this enumeration is non-quadratic. Add boundary tests for an unset environment value and a higher valid safe integer. Publish exact commands, base/head revisions, environment, and results for the focused suite, stress fixture, full regression, package, and archive gates; retain the disclosed unrelated regression failure.

Charge the budget for segment-pair checks
When either eligible relationship contains many path segments (for example, two imported SVG routes with thousands of supported Q commands), collectRelationshipCrossings() charges just one unit here and then executes the full Cartesian product at lines 764-766, so ARCHIFY_CHECK_MAX_CROSSING_PAIR_CHECKS=1 provides no time bound. On the candidate, an 88 KB two-route/2,500-Q fixture exceeded a 5 s timeout without producing a receipt; account for segment-pair tests (or otherwise cap them) so a single relationship pair cannot bypass the new fail-closed budget.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Expose the budget recovery in public diagnostics
When this budget is hit through the documented archify deliver <type> <input.json> ... [--json] or finalize flows, checkerDiagnostics() calls compositionFixes(), but archify/bin/archify.mjs:2675-2683,2727-2729 has no mapping for this new code. With ARCHIFY_CHECK_MAX_CROSSING_PAIR_CHECKS=1 on event-stream.dataflow.json, the emitted diagnostic had supportedFixes: [], leaving the rerun instruction only in evidence.detail; add this code to the mapping so agent-facing failures expose the executable recovery in supportedFixes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Count endpoint-exempt pairs against the budget
When check-render-output.mjs inspects a large fan-in or fan-out whose relationships share a semantic endpoint, the preceding continue runs before this guard, so none of the O(n²) candidate iterations increments attemptedPairs. Consequently even ARCHIFY_CHECK_MAX_CROSSING_PAIR_CHECKS=1 traverses every pair and emits no budget error (a 2.9 MB fixture with 20,000 supported Q routes sharing hub ran past a 5 s deadline while reporting the crossing check as passed); move or extend the accounting ahead of the exemption, or otherwise bound that traversal.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Stop pairwise work after the budget is exhausted
With many unrelated relationships, exhausting this budget still does not bound the checker: after this call returns exhausted, execution continues into subpathCorridors() at lines 171-176, whose collectAmbiguousCorridors() scans every relationship pair again without this limit. Running the direct checker on this candidate with 10,000 one-segment routes and ARCHIFY_CHECK_MAX_CROSSING_PAIR_CHECKS=1 hit a 5-second timeout with no stdout, so check/deliver can still hang instead of emitting the fail-closed receipt; short-circuit the remaining pairwise analyses or charge them to a shared budget.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Skip pairs with no analyzable segments
In a readable-v2 artifact, a supported path consisting only of a non-collinear Q has arrow.segments, so it survives the filter, but the replacement at line 749 gives it an empty crossing-analysis segment list. This increment still charges every pair of such no-op relationships: with ARCHIFY_CHECK_MAX_CROSSING_PAIR_CHECKS=1, three disjoint Q-only routes now return composition/crossing-analysis-budget although the inner loop performs zero segment tests (the parent commit passes the same fixture), and the default similarly rejects 317 such routes. Filter after the replacement or skip pairs whose transformed segment list is empty.
Thank you for working on predictable checker performance and for ensuring that incomplete inspection is not reported as a pass.
Before deciding whether to adopt this limit, could you provide a real diagram that makes crossing analysis noticeably slow, together with reproducible before/after timings? Please record the input, base and candidate revisions, command, and environment, and distinguish a completed check from an early stop caused by the new budget. Existing evidence can be reused; there is no need to recreate it unnecessarily.
We would also appreciate an explanation of the practical benefit of the 50,000-pair default and evidence that representative complex diagrams are not unnecessarily blocked. An additional failure-and-rerun step has a cost for users and Agents, so we want to understand whether this tradeoff is worthwhile. Counting relationship pairs also does not bound all segment comparisons within each pair; please explain whether the proposed limit addresses the measured bottleneck.
The low-budget fixture demonstrates the diagnostic mechanism, but it does not yet establish a real performance problem or the value of this default. We would like to assess that evidence before proceeding. Thanks again for your contribution!

Bound segment comparisons inside each relationship pair.
attemptedPairs increments once before the nested segment loops. Two relationships with 10,000 parsed L segments each can therefore perform up to 100 million comparisons while consuming one pair. analyzeSvgPath accepts repeated parameter groups without a segment-count limit.
Add a work or time limit inside the segment loops. When it is reached, return exhausted: true so incomplete inspection fails.

@tt-a1i This PR is still open. When convenient, please review it or let me know whether you prefer a rebase or closure; I will follow up on any feedback.
Thanks @outlier27-cell for following up and for working on predictable checker behavior. I reviewed the current head, c552093, including the checker, its callers, and the latest associated CI. The explicit failure instead of a false pass is useful, and the new budget-exhaustion test passes in that run. We are happy to merge improvements with demonstrated practical value, but the default-limit tradeoff still needs evidence.
Could you address these three points?
Practical benefit and default: please answer the earlier request (fix(check): bound crossing analysis work #876 (comment)) with a representative slow input, reproducible baseline/candidate timings, and the rationale for 50,000 pairs. Distinguish a completed inspection from an early budget stop, and include a few representative complex diagrams that should remain supported. Existing evidence is welcome; there is no need to build a broad benchmark suite or meet an arbitrary case count.
Budget scope: the current code bounds eligible relationship-pair checks, but each charged pair can still perform an unrestricted product of segment comparisons, and supported paths can contain many segments: https://github.com/outlier27-cell/archify/blob/c5520934eed544a4d7ca8328109ebeba0f327061/archify/scripts/check-render-output.mjs#L751-L783 . Skipping shared-endpoint pairs before charging is consistent with the eligible-pair metric; it does not bound traversal cost. Please show that this metric addresses the measured bottleneck, or add a suitable bound within crossing analysis with focused coverage. This does not require budgeting every checker subsystem in this PR; keep the performance claims correspondingly narrow. The recovery environment variable already exists in the diagnostic detail. It would also help to surface that guidance consistently through the public CLI's supportedFixes mapping.
Current validation: the latest associated run https://github.com/tt-a1i/archify/actions/runs/39370925237 is not green. ZIP freshness/archive reproducibility fail, and the Node 22 aggregate gate consequently skips its later checks. Once the scope/evidence question is addressed, please reconcile with current dev, refresh packaged output as required, and provide final-revision results. The older green-CI comment is not current validation.
This does not change rendering geometry, but the new failure condition can stop deliver/finalize. We would like the benefit of the default to justify that extra failure-and-rerun step. Please keep the PR open; a rebase alone would not answer the design question, and there is no need to close it just because this evidence is still pending. Thank you again for the contribution.

Justify the crossing-analysis default limits with representative timings.
The PR sets default limits of 50,000 relationship pairs and 500,000 segment pairs. The supplied PR evidence contains no timing data for representative complex diagrams, so the defaults are not justified. A default that is too low can make a valid diagram fail with composition/crossing-analysis-budget. A default that is too high can leave the check slow.
Provide the following for a representative slow diagram, measured on the final revision:
The input path, the base and final revisions, the exact command, and the environment.
Baseline and candidate timings, with each run marked as completed or stopped at the budget.
The rationale for 50,000 relationship pairs and 500,000 segment pairs, with examples of complex diagrams that remain supported.
State whether the relationship-pair counter bounds the measured bottleneck. Limit performance claims to the work that the counters charge.

Evidence and final-revision validation are now in the PR description for e7ae6a1: exact Node 22 command, 120-route/100-segment stress input, baseline completed (13.04s, exit 0), final bounded stop (8.78s, exit 1 at 500,000 segment comparisons), plus three current gallery artifacts that pass defaults. This is a bounded-inner-work demonstration, not a claim that the stress input is representative. No GitHub workflow has been scheduled for this head.
@outlier27-cell I verified the updated description against head e7ae6a18. It now records the commands, environment, timings, and completion status. The reported stress result supports the narrow claim that the segment-pair budget bounds inner comparisons. It does not establish a general checker time limit.
The remaining gap is the maintainer’s default-adoption question. Three gallery passes show compatibility for those inputs, but the stress input does not establish representative benefit or explain the two numeric defaults. The smallest next step is one representative slow-diagram comparison with a default rationale, or an explicit maintainer decision to accept the synthetic evidence for this scope. No broad benchmark suite is needed.
The returned checks contain only the CodeRabbit status, not workflow validation for this head. Required final-head CI remains separate from this timing finding.

Thanks for the update at b0737a0. The new segment-pair guard addresses the previously identified unbounded inner comparison loop; I am retiring that finding. I also see the refreshed archive and the new public check fixture.
One integration detail remains: the new fixture checks composition.issues[].supportedFixes, while deliver/finalize build their diagnostics through compositionFixes(), which still has no mapping for this budget code. The guidance is present in evidence, but diagnostics[].supportedFixes remains empty. Please carry the guidance into that public diagnostic field as well: https://github.com/outlier27-cell/archify/blob/b0737a0e71f53a85613a0780e4e2304facc6b673/archify/bin/archify.mjs#L2723-L2768 .
The remaining adoption question is the previously requested practical evidence, now covering both the 50,000 relationship-pair and 500,000 segment-pair defaults. Please update the description and final-revision validation to match. I have not yet found an Actions result associated with this head, so I am not carrying forward the previous revision's CI outcome. Thanks for addressing the concrete implementation feedback.

@tt-a1i Addressed the remaining integration point at e7ae6a1.
Public deliver/finalize diagnostics now preserve the checker-selected supportedFixes, so relationship-pair and segment-pair exhaustion recommend only their respective environment variable. The new public segment-pair E2E test covers that distinction.
The PR description now has the exact final-head Node 22 command, stress-input boundary, baseline/final timings, default rationale, and supported normal-output checks. The dense fixture proves the charged inner comparison is bounded; it is not presented as a representative user diagram.
Final local validation: node --test test/svg-path-checker.test.mjs 46/46, git diff --check, and Node 22 ZIP rebuild all pass.
GitHub has not scheduled workflow jobs for this head, so I am not carrying forward an earlier CI result. The branch remains based on current dev; the GitHub merge UI still reports the existing archify.zip conflict. Please review the final recovery contract and evidence when convenient.
Thanks for the additional evidence and fixes at fed9ada. The inner segment budget and public diagnostic forwarding are now addressed, and ZIP freshness passes. I am retiring those earlier findings.
The stress measurement is useful evidence that the guard stops the intended work. Since the baseline completes and the candidate stops incomplete, 13.04s versus 8.78s demonstrates an early stop, not an equivalent-work speedup.
The new CI run https://github.com/tt-a1i/archify/actions/runs/40070490976 exposes a more concrete compatibility question: the existing dense deliver fixture fails at test/cli.test.mjs:901, the near-limit finalize setup fails at :1228, and the supplied-env finalize test fails at validation (test/finalize.test.mjs:1265), leaving later stages unrun. These are separate from the shared README showcase drift.
Please inspect the failure receipts and compare these maintained fixtures on the same base with and without the new budget, particularly the 500,000-segment default. The logs show the unexpected exits, but do not yet establish their cause. If the new default rejects those fixtures, please address that compatibility tradeoff rather than simply raising the test environment's budget or changing the expected success. This would directly help resolve the outstanding default-value question.
Please also align the description's final-head and CI statements with the revision actually being validated. Thanks for continuing to improve the evidence and implementation.
Raise the segment-pair default above the maintained 11-node fixture requirement.
bipartiteArchitectureSpec(11) is a maintained delivery fixture and requires status 0. With the new default, crossing analysis exhausts at 2,000,000 segment comparisons, returns composition/crossing-analysis-budget, and makes deliver fail. Set DEFAULT_MAX_CROSSING_SEGMENT_PAIR_CHECKS to the smallest measured value that completes this fixture. Keep the environment override and bounded exhaustion path unchanged; an arbitrary higher value is not sufficient.

Update DEFAULT_MAX_CROSSING_SEGMENT_PAIR_CHECKS to the smallest measured limit
that lets bipartiteArchitectureSpec(11) complete with status 0; keep the
ARCHIFY_CHECK_MAX_CROSSING_SEGMENT_PAIR_CHECKS override and bounded exhaustion
behavior unchanged.
Add a test for invalid crossing-budget environment values.
positiveIntegerEnvironment falls back to the default for unset, empty, non-numeric, non-positive, and unsafe-integer values. The added tests set only valid '1' overrides, so a regression in the fallback path would not fail any test. Add a table test in test/svg-path-checker.test.mjs that uses the existing check(t, body, { env }) helper with the three-arrow fixture. Run it with ARCHIFY_CHECK_MAX_CROSSING_PAIR_CHECKS set to '', '0', '-1', and '1.5'. For each value, assert that no composition/crossing-analysis-budget issue is reported and that relationship_crossings does not record a budget detail. This test detects a parser change that accepts these values as a restrictive limit. Values that parse to NaN or to a very large limit would not be detected by this small fixture.

The current tests use only valid 1 overrides. They do not exercise empty, nonnumeric, zero, fractional, or unsafe-integer values.
Use a table-driven checker test for these values and one valid override. The fixture must exceed the 50,000 relationship-pair default, and invalid cases must assert exhaustion at 50,000. A small three-path fixture would only show that invalid values do not behave like the valid 1 override; it would not detect a changed large fallback value.

Thanks — I verified the current-head CI at 6f6070a: https://github.com/tt-a1i/archify/actions/runs/40072277920 . The three dense delivery/finalize cases now pass with the production 3,000,000-segment default, not a test-only override. The >1 MiB fixture is also stronger at 10x10. I am closing the compatibility concern raised in my previous comment.
Together with the segment guard, diagnostic forwarding, and refreshed archive, this addresses the concrete implementation findings. The default now has a maintained-fixture compatibility rationale. I understand the 9.81s stress result as a bounded early stop, not a normal-diagram speedup.
The remaining adoption question is the value of this defensive limit, rather than another request to rework those fixes. No further implementation changes are requested on those points. The full-regression logs now fail only on the separate README showcase drift, which we are tracking centrally. Thank you for addressing the feedback carefully; this acknowledgment is not yet merge approval.
We evaluated your current head debee8786174558a041b0379f3421953163f28bf and adopted the bounded crossing work in our customized3.2.0 fork: ddcd6c7, compared with our prior e67f8b7 baseline.
On macOS/Apple Silicon with official Node22.23.2, the 15 maintained golden artifacts plus the10x10 and11x11 dense fixtures produce byte-identical complete checker receipts before/after. Three sequential paired runs give these medians:
Input
Base, complete
Candidate
Dense10x10
0.196s
0.196s, complete
Dense11x11
0.259s
0.259s, complete
Your120-route/100-segment synthetic fixture
2.035s
1.435s, incomplete stop
The synthetic candidate exits1 after exactly3,000,000 segment comparisons and301 eligible relationship pairs, with composition/crossing-analysis-budget; this is a defensive early stop, not an equivalent-work speedup or total-checker time limit. The two maintained dense fixtures also reject the earlier500,000-segment setting and pass the production3,000,000 default. This supplies concrete compatibility evidence for retaining the revised default, without claiming universal optimality or a naturally occurring slow-user case.
Our adaptation retains our SVG scanner, boundary-membership and route fixes. Both budget-specific recovery instructions reach public diagnostics; added assertions verify an exhausted delivery preserves the prior artifact and cleans its staging. We retained your strengthened10x10 receipt fixture and credit.
Final qualification: 3467 full-suite passes,132 conditional/platform skips;323 real-Chrome passes without skips. The immutable package is installed and all213 managed hashes/modes verified; only the checker, CLI diagnostic forwarding and its contract changed. 47 installed checker tests, actual installed CLI delivery and the24-case installed toolbar matrix pass. Existing fonts, previous fixes, global settings and user HTML are preserved. No new native Windows run, hosted fork-CI pass or upstream acceptance is claimed.
Reproduce the synthetic input with node test/helpers/crossing-budget-fixture.mjs <output.html> and run node archify/scripts/check-render-output.mjs <output.html> at the linked fork commit; the default incomplete result is intentional. Ordinary dense deliver/finalize controls use the production defaults.
Incorporated the pure-quadratic follow-up from @outlier27-cell's head 5ba198fd8d4a74b5abb3a5fd29f9925cb426f5f7 into our customized 3.2.0 fork: 0884a38.
The pair selection now follows projection into straight analysis segments. An empty pure-Q projection no longer consumes the crossing-pair budget. The production pair/segment limits, incomplete-analysis diagnostic and conservative handling of unsupported/malformed paths remain intact.
Red/green reproduction: three readable-v2 pure-Q relationships with a one-pair budget previously failed with budget exhaustion; the same input now passes with zero proper crossings. All 48 SVG-path/checker regressions pass, including the existing bounded-failure and previous-output-preservation cases. This is a correctness refinement, not a new timing or arbitrary-curve intersection claim.
The final immutable package is installed: all 213 managed hashes/modes match, and the installed pure-Q regression passes. Combined qualification for this package: 3,478 full-suite passes / 134 conditional skips; 315 maintained Chrome passes / 10 conditional skips; 25 additional export passes. Earlier customizations and existing user HTML are preserved. No new native Windows execution or upstream acceptance is claimed.
…ck-extraction
Resolve the archify.zip conflict by rebuilding it from the merged tree
(scripts/build-zip.sh, canonical Node 22 toolchain), so the package
carries both upstream dev content (incl. tt-a1i#876 crossing-budget work and
tt-a1i#1113 reader baseline) and this PR's svg-block fix. The .mjs merge is
a clean union: the PR's depth-tracked svg scanner plus upstream's
crossing-budget bounds, verified by 89/89 focus tests. No other
changes: the merged tree differs from upstream dev only in the PR's
three files.

Problem and value
Fixes #683.
check-render-outputnow fails closed when bounded crossing inspection cannot finish, rather than treating an incomplete result as a pass. It reports which budget was exhausted and supplies the matching rerun knob.Scope and non-goals
The latter is the smallest tested default that preserves the existing 11x11 dense
deliverandfinalizereceipt fixtures; explicit environment overrides still allow tighter limits.
