feat: search, run_log, manifest, layout and scan_gate modules from openhuman core - #33
Conversation
Add a search module that ranks skills by BM25 relevance and projects descriptions for display, backed by the tinytools crates pinned to a specific revision so hosts linking tinytools through their own patch table resolve a single package. Add a version to the tinytools-std git dependency so it resolves consistently alongside tinytools, and allow the tinytools repository in the cargo-deny git source list. The layout tests now compare against an empty slice instead of asserting is_empty, which keeps the assertions type-checked. Reformat two over-long assert_eq! calls in the legacy scaffold root tests so they match the surrounding style and stay within the line width limit. No behaviour changes. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Remove the HTTP client from the core dependency graph
tinytools-std is an unconditional dependency and its locked dependency list includes reqwest, so every tinyskills build now pulls in an HTTP stack merely to sanitize descriptions. This breaks the crate's host-supplied-network boundary and substantially expands the default dependency surface; use a network-free sanitization dependency or implement the small sanitizer locally.

Accept discovery roots from the embedding host
These helpers hard-code the OpenHuman-specific .openhuman layout into a supposedly portable crate, so hosts using any other directory layout silently scan the wrong locations and cannot supply their own ordered roots. Accept the concrete roots at the API boundary rather than deriving product paths from home or workspace.

Keep the legacy workspace root behind the trust check
When query.trusted is false, this branch still scans <workspace>/skills and exposes its bundles as Legacy, allowing an untrusted checkout to contribute skills despite the caller explicitly denying workspace trust. Move every workspace-derived root under the trust condition, or require the host to pass approved roots explicitly.

Accept the run-log root from the host
runs_dir unconditionally imposes <workspace>/skills/.runs, so embeddings with a different layout will write and search execution logs in an unrelated location. Directory layout and execution artifacts belong to the embedding product; this API should accept the already-approved log root instead of deriving it from a workspace.

Reject symlinked run-log entries before returning them
If an attacker can populate a workspace's .runs directory, a symlink named with the requested eight-character suffix is returned here and read_run_log_slice subsequently follows it, exposing the contents of an arbitrary readable file. Check symlink_metadata, use no-follow directory handles, and verify containment before returning a log path.

Bound run-log reads while scanning
A single long-running trace—or a directory containing many large logs—causes scan_runs to allocate and parse every file in full merely to list run metadata, allowing workspace-controlled disk contents to exhaust memory or stall the process. Read bounded header and footer regions, and skip or report logs exceeding an explicit limit.

Prevent task text from masquerading as a result footer
Because task_prompt and step text are written verbatim, a prompt containing --- result --- makes file_has_footer report completion before the real footer exists; with crafted status: and finished: lines, read_terminal_outcome can also return a false terminal result because it searches the first marker. Use an unambiguous framed format or parse and validate a complete footer rather than treating a bare marker anywhere in the file as terminal.

Restore workspace lints instead of allowing them module-wide
This module-level allowance disables missing_errors_doc and truncation diagnostics for every current and future item in run_log, hiding exactly the fallibility and conversion issues the workspace lint policy is intended to catch. Add the required # Errors sections and use checked conversions, or narrowly suppress a specific proven-safe expression rather than weakening both lints for the module.

Escape every TOML-forbidden control character
When a slug, trigger, input name, description, or type contains controls such as NUL, backspace, form feed, or another U+0000..U+001F character not handled above, this fallback emits it literally and render_manifest_toml returns invalid TOML. Encode all supported controls with TOML escapes or reject forbidden characters before rendering.

The `project` function now takes a sanitiser callback instead of calling `tinytools_std::sanitize::sanitize_for_llm` directly, letting the host supply the implementation. Reject symlinks before appending run logs
When path comes from the predictable run_log_path and an attacker can pre-create that entry—or a parent such as .runs—as a symlink, OpenOptions::open follows it, so write_header and write_footer append prompts, inputs, or output to an arbitrary writable file outside the workspace. Open the log through no-follow directory handles and reject symlinked path components before writing.

Apply filename sanitization when resolving run IDs
When a run ID contains any character outside [A-Za-z0-9_-], run_log_path writes a suffix using sanitize(short(run_id)), but this lookup searches for the unsanitized value. For example, a run ID containing / produces a log with - in its filename and can never be found through this API; construct the suffix with the same transformation used by the writer.

Strip the UTC suffix from scanned start timestamps
For logs produced by write_header, the value assigned here ends in UTC, unlike finished, where that suffix is removed. Consequently ScannedRun::started is not the RFC 3339 timestamp its public documentation promises, and consumers parsing it as RFC 3339 will reject every generated run; trim the suffix here as is already done for finished.

Preserve UTF-8 characters across log slices
When max_bytes cuts through a multibyte UTF-8 character, from_utf8_lossy emits a replacement character in this slice and the next call starts in the middle of the same code point, so concatenating the slices permanently corrupts an otherwise valid log. Adjust slice boundaries to complete code points or return bytes rather than applying lossy decoding.

Report layout scan failures to callers.
If scan_root cannot read a selected root or directory entry, it silently skips it. discover_layout then returns an incomplete result with no failure indication. Change the scanner and this public API to return a typed result, and document its # Errors behavior. Apply the same propagation to the other scan_root calls in this function. As per coding guidelines, “Return typed results from fallible public APIs and document # Errors.” Based on learnings, directory traversal should propagate read_dir and DirEntry errors rather than silently skip files.

Escape all TOML control characters in toml_string_literal.
TOML basic strings do not allow raw control characters other than tab. These are U+0000 to U+0008, U+000A to U+001F, and U+007F. The function escapes only \n, \r, and \t.
A description, when_to_use, or name can contain another control character, for example U+001B or U+0000. The function then writes it raw. The output is invalid TOML and a TOML parser rejects the manifest file. The doc comment on Line 84 says control characters are escaped, so the code does not meet its own contract.
Add an arm that escapes the remaining control characters as \uXXXX.

Keep enough run ID information to distinguish log files.
Two runs with the same skill, timestamp, and first eight run-ID characters receive the same path. Their headers, steps, and footers then append to one file. Runs at different timestamps can also become indistinguishable to find_run_log_path, which returns the first matching prefix. Use an unambiguous filename identity and verify the full run ID during lookup.

run_log_path sanitizes the first eight run-ID characters, but this suffix uses them unchanged. For run_id = "abc.def12", the writer creates _abc-def1.log and this lookup searches for _abc.def1.log. Apply the same normalization on both paths.

Update both run_log.rs sites: at lines 361–363, keep `complete` false when only
the result marker is present and require the footer’s `finished:` field; at line
224, keep the scanned status `RUNNING` until that field arrives. Align both
readers’ completion behavior with `read_terminal_outcome`.

Avoid rereading the full log for every slice.
When a caller pages through a large log, each slice calls file_has_footer, which allocates and reads the entire file. The work grows with the full log size even when max_bytes is small. Use a bounded completion check or separately recorded completion state.

Update file_has_footer to avoid reading and allocating the entire log on each
slice; check for the footer using a bounded read or reuse separately recorded
completion state, preserving the existing footer-detection behavior.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Serializing Gated<T> fails when T is not a map or struct.
#[serde(tag = "status")] makes Gated internally tagged. The serializer writes Installed(T) as a newtype variant. For that variant, serde can only merge the status key into a map, a struct, or a unit value. If T is a String, a number, a Vec, or a tuple, serde_json::to_value returns a "cannot serialize tagged newtype variant" error at runtime. The compiler does not catch this. Gated<T> is public and generic, so a host can hit this error with something as simple as Gated<String>.
You can fix it in one of two ways:
- Document that
Tmust serialize as a map or struct. - Use adjacent tagging so any
Tworks. This changes the wire shape, and the test at Line 226 would need an update.

Review comment at @crates/tinyskills/src/scan_gate.rs around lines 123 - 130:
Document the serialization constraint on public enum Gated<T>: because its
internal `status` tag requires `Installed(T)` to serialize as a map or struct,
state in its rustdoc that other shapes may fail to serialize. Preserve the
existing tagging and wire format.

Enforce the description cap in bytes.
project accepts the callback's output without checking its length. The callback used in search_tests.rs counts characters, so a description containing 241 é characters produces 482 bytes despite MAX_DESCRIPTION being 240 bytes. Truncate the sanitised result at a UTF-8 boundary before assigning it to SkillHit.description.

Update the description assignment in project so the sanitized result is
truncated to at most MAX_DESCRIPTION bytes at a valid UTF-8 boundary before it
is stored in SkillHit.description; do not rely on the callback’s character-count
limit.

Gate the legacy workspace scan on the trusted flag
The trusted flag is documented as Whether the workspace is trusted; untrusted workspaces contribute no project-scope roots, and the project roots directly above this line honour it:
if query.workspace {
if query.trusted {
for (root, kind) in project_roots(workspace) { ... }
}
if wants(RootKind::Skill) {
discovered.extend(scan_root(&workspace.join("skills"), SkillScope::Legacy));
}
}The legacy scan has no such guard, so with workspace: Some(ws) and trusted: false a caller still reads and registers every bundle under <ws>/skills as SkillScope::Legacy. Concrete reachable case: LayoutQuery { workspace: Some(untrusted_repo), trusted: false, kinds: ALL_ROOT_KINDS, .. } where <untrusted_repo>/skills/evil/SKILL.md names demo; that bundle is scanned and, because SkillScope::Legacy outranks Builtin and equal-scope ties are decided by TieBreak::LastWins, the on-disk bundle wins over the host's own builtin demo. Marking a workspace untrusted is supposed to stop exactly this. Gate the legacy scan on query.trusted as well.
