Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7634, #7610, #7543 and #64.

The Resolver from #65 cannot yet express three things OpenHuman's host adapter needs to delete its own loader (openhuman#7739), so they are added here rather than worked around host-side:

  • ModuleGate / LoadError::Disabled(label): host policy that switches a module off by id. Refused before anything is claimed, resolved, reported or started ([components] switches in OpenHuman).
  • ModuleSource::Linked plus ResolverInputs::linked factories and Resolver::load_linked: a module compiled into the host, admitted through attach_linked_with_config. A missing or failing factory is terminal and cached, never a fall back to the release.
  • ResolverInputs::search_skip and ModuleHost::load_search_paths_except: the search-path rung does not open libraries of switched-off modules.
  • ResolverInputs::on_resolved: hook run before waiting callers are released (OpenHuman invalidates the curated connector catalog snapshot there).

No ABI, manifest, dependency or digest admission code is touched. Tests: gate refusal starts no runtime and reports nothing, linked source without a factory is terminal and not retried, a failing factory leaks no cause, the hook runs once, wire form of Linked, search-skip predicate. cargo test -p tinybus --features modules --lib: 596 passed, 50 ignored; clippy 1.98 -D warnings clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Modules can now be provided through registered factories and excluded selectively from search-path loading.
    • Module loading can be restricted by policy, and a notification can run when resolution completes.
    • Module loading errors now include a clear message when a module is disabled.

Introduce a host module that resolves module names against the local
host, alongside the existing resolution logic. This lets callers look up
modules provided by the host process rather than only remote peers.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The file-stem skip check used when scanning search paths is now a named
function so it can be tested directly, with a new test covering stem
matching and empty skip lists. Remaining changes are formatting only.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Extend the resolver test helper with the newly added linked, search_skip, gate, and on_resolved fields so the fixture keeps compiling against the updated struct.

📝 Walkthrough

The resolver adds linked-module sources, a per-module policy gate, a resolution-completion hook, and search-path exclusions by file stem. ReleaseAsset also adds equality traits.

Changes: Module resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolver inputs and policy
crates/tinybus/src/module/resolve.rs, crates/tinybus/src/module/mod.rs, crates/tinybus/src/module/client_tests.rs, crates/tinybus/src/module/resolve_tests.rs
Resolver inputs include linked factories, search exclusions, a gate, and a completion hook. The resolver can reject a module before starting its load and calls the hook before publishing the outcome. Tests cover gate behavior and single hook invocation.
Linked-module resolution
crates/tinybus/src/module/resolve.rs, crates/tinybus/src/module/resolve_tests.rs
ModuleSource::Linked invokes a registered factory and attaches its module with configuration. Tests cover missing factories, factory errors, and the linked-source wire format.
Search-path exclusions
crates/tinybus/src/module/host.rs, crates/tinybus/src/module/resolve.rs, crates/tinybus/src/module/host_tests.rs
The host can load search paths while excluding exact file-stem matches. The resolver passes the configured exclusions, and tests check stem matching.

Release asset equality

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release asset equality traits
crates/tinybus/src/module/first_admitted.rs
ReleaseAsset now derives PartialEq and Eq; its fields and loading behavior are unchanged.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b2da8

Several resolver issues should be fixed before merge. Switching off one module can break configuration and dependency ordering for other modules in the same directory. Linked modules can be reported as unsupported even though they would load. A misregistered linked factory can mark the wrong module as ready. A panicking resolution hook may leave waiting callers stuck.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b2da8

The new controls preserve important admission checks, but search exclusions can discard configuration for other modules, and a failing completion hook can leave an activated module inconsistent with its reported state. These are meaningful control-integrity and recovery risks; no new remote exploit was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · observed: When any directory entry matches the skip list, every remaining library is loaded through load_file with empty configuration instead of the host-owned configuration used by batch loading. Dependency ordering also becomes filename ordering. This introduced branch changes initialization policy for unrelated modules in the directory and can discard configured restrictions; the actual security-sensitive configuration values were not available.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: A panic in the new completion hook can interrupt publication after successful module attachment. Under unwinding, an active or subsequent waiter records terminal abandonment even though the module remains attached; if no waiter observes closure, the slot remains Loading. Existing waiter recovery prevents an indefinite active wait, but does not reconcile activation, catalog invalidation, and resolver state.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated effects are within a host process's module set and bus state. Configuration drift affects all remaining libraries in a directory containing a skipped entry, not only the module being resolved. The evidence does not establish tenant, downstream service, or data-store exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A skipped directory entry selects a path that replaces configured module initialization with empty configuration. This is a concrete control-drift mechanism, but exploitation would depend on security-relevant configuration and the ability to influence an admitted search directory. Neither a remote input path nor specific weakened restrictions was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The gate governs direct resolution by registry id; search exclusions govern exact UTF-8 file stems. A search request still loads other non-excluded artifacts before matching the requested bus name. Broad search activation predates this PR, so incomplete stem mapping is a limitation of the new policy integration, not demonstrated increased attacker reachability.
  • observed — The new linked path passes configuration selected for the requested id to the factory-produced module without comparing its manifest bus name with the ReleaseRecord. Factories and records are host-registered, and normal admission remains enforced. The pre-existing local override similarly accepts successful attachment without a requested-record identity comparison; no lower-trust factory registration path was established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Blocking factory panics can become loader errors through the task join result, whereas the new synchronous completion hook has no equivalent containment. Recovery from its sender closure settles a waiter-visible failure but cannot restore catalog invalidation or reconcile an already-active module.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply exclusions before the existing batch admission pipeline so retained modules keep host configuration, dependency ordering, and loaded-file deduplication.
  • proposed — Make hook execution and terminal publication exception-safe, with an explicit policy for invalidation failure after attachment that preserves accurate externally visible state.
  • proposed — Define and validate the host's registry-id-to-artifact-stem mapping, and check linked factory output against the expected record identity before configuration delivery and activation.

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds four host-policy seams to the Resolver (a gate that refuses disabled modules, a `Linked` source backed by registered factories, a search-path skip list, and a resolved hook) plus the supporting `ModuleHost::load_search_paths_except`. The edits are internally consistent, all `ResolverInputs` construction sites in the diff were updated with the new fields, and the new tests cover the gate, the linked source, and the hook. I found one defect: the new hook call happens after `mark_terminal`/`report` rather than before, so a panicking hook leaves the resolution recorded as `Failed` even when the module loaded successfully, because `complete` is never reached. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `97c5a5b9f78d`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
