Summary

Follow-up for late review findings that arrived after #19 and #20 had already merged.

  • exact-pin the tightly coupled runtime, macro, and module SDK crates to the same patch release
  • preserve the original FnOnce configured-startup helper while giving macro-generated modules a separate reconfigurable path
  • make the additive reinitialize callback explicitly optional and reject a full-size vtable that omits it
  • publish the module connection for reconfiguration only after initial setup succeeds
  • enforce a mandatory four-second module-side reinitialization deadline
  • serialize reinitialization with other reinitializations and shutdown, retaining the lifecycle guard even if the host stops waiting
  • add named tests for module-side serialization, deadline enforcement, host-side lifecycle exclusion, nullable callback handling, and the legacy one-shot closure contract

Review dispositions

Two late findings did not require code changes:

  • The claimed double move of config is not present: the reinitialization closure deserializes a new shadowed config value, while the initial value moves only into initial setup.
  • Inline --config is intentionally not restored. Module initialization is sensitive by default, and placing secrets in argv would reverse that security decision. --config-file and stdin remain the supported paths.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo clippy --locked --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings
  • cargo test --locked --all-features
  • cargo check --locked --no-default-features
  • cargo llvm-cov per-file 90 percent gate with all loader fixtures and ignored tests enabled
  • git diff --check

Closes the unresolved compatibility finding left on #19 and addresses the post-merge lifecycle review on #20.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Modules can now be reconfigured while running, with setup bounded by a four-second deadline.
    • Lifecycle operations are serialized so reconfiguration and shutdown do not overlap.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Cancelled or timed-out lifecycle operations no longer leave the host’s module reservation stuck.
    • Failed shutdowns preserve the module’s observed state instead of incorrectly marking it stopped.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified reconfiguration time limits and how they interact with shutdown.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The module ABI and SDK now support optional reinitialization callbacks with bounded setup. The transport serializes reinitialization and shutdown. The host tracks active lifecycle operations and awaits shutdown through the transport.

Changes

Module lifecycle and reconfiguration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reconfiguration contract and bounded setup
Cargo.toml, crates/tinybus/src/module/abi.rs, crates/tinybus-module/src/lib.rs
The workspace pins the three Tinybus dependencies to version =0.1.1. The ABI makes the reinitialization callback optional. The SDK separates configured startup from reconfigurable startup, shares configuration parsing, and returns TB_TIMEOUT when reinitialization setup exceeds its deadline.
Serialized transport lifecycle
crates/tinybus/src/module/transport.rs, docs/modules/module/abi.md
The transport holds a shared lifecycle lock across reinitialization and shutdown callbacks, applies deadlines, and maps TB_TIMEOUT to Error::Timeout. Tests cover callback exclusion, missing callbacks, and older vtables. The ABI documentation describes callback deadlines and serialization.
Host lifecycle reservation and shutdown
crates/tinybus/src/module/host.rs, crates/tinybus/src/module/host_test.rs, docs/modules/module/README.md
The host tracks in-flight lifecycle operations and uses a drop guard to clear reservations. Shutdown awaits each module’s stop operation. Tests cover cancellation and shutdown during blocked reinitialization. The module documentation describes lifecycle deadlines and serialization.

Shutdown can leave a reinitializing module running, or report a stopped module as ready after a timeout. Resolve both lifecycle failures before merging.

A rabbit checks the callback clock,
Then guards the lock around the hop.
Reinit waits; shutdown waits too,
The setup ends before time is through.
A timeout marks the task as done,
And tests confirm the races won.

the transition and return the error for a spawned-task timeout so shutdown can
complete and update the module state.

💡 Codex Review

let _guard = reinitialize_lock.lock().expect("module reinitialize lock");

P2 Badge Include lock waiting in the reinitialization deadline

When two ABI reinitialization callbacks are entered concurrently, the second can spend nearly four seconds blocked on this mutex before beginning its own four-second timeout, so that call can run for almost eight seconds despite the documented mandatory four-second module-side deadline. Start the deadline before acquiring the serialization lock and bound the lock wait with the same remaining budget.

P1 Badge Track stop launch state per invocation

Fresh evidence beyond the earlier cancellation case is that a second stop resets this shared flag while a first cancelled stop's shutdown callback is still running. If the second stop waits on the lifecycle mutex and is then cancelled, its guard observes false and clears transition_from; when the first callback finally closes the transport, peer_detached no longer recognizes the planned stop and can leave the disconnected module reported as Ready. Keep launch state on each stop operation, or prevent another host stop from replacing the pending transition until the original callback completes.
