feat(jail): add tinybox-jail (per-process directory jail) - #12
Conversation
This change introduces the tinybox-jail crate, providing a cross-platform sandboxing abstraction with platform-specific backends for Linux, macOS, and Windows, along with a no-op fallback. The crate includes detection logic, a jail trait and registry, and comprehensive unit tests for each module. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Landlock (Linux), Seatbelt (macOS), AppContainer (Windows), a noop fallback and a persistent JailRegistry, moved from the OpenHuman host. A cwd jail confines one spawned Command to a directory tree, distinct from the box-level namespace isolation in tinybox-linux. The Landlock backend sits behind the `landlock` feature; the crate opts out of the workspace unsafe_code forbid because it is Win32 FFI and pre_exec. Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

The crate was restructured to use `lib.rs` as its root module instead of `mod.rs`, so all documentation references and doc-comment links have been updated to reflect the new module path. The README now lists test files under `lib_tests.rs` and points to `lib.rs` for re-exports and free functions, while doc comments in `jail.rs` and `registry.rs` use the correct `crate::` paths. A test that relied on the default backend is now gated behind `#[cfg(not(feature = "landlock"))]` to avoid conflicts when the Landlock feature is enabled. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Added documentation comments to the SeatbeltBackend struct and its constructor, and derived the Debug trait to improve developer experience when working with this type. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Remove the `NoopBackend` fallback and introduce an `UnsupportedBackend` that returns an `Unsupported` error when no OS-level sandbox is available. This makes the absence of a sandbox explicit rather than silently allowing unrestricted execution, and callers must now opt into `NoopBackend` only when they intend to run without restrictions. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The pre_exec closure now takes ownership of the ruleset via `take()` instead of moving it directly, preventing a use-after-move error when the closure is called. If the ruleset is missing, the closure returns an EINVAL error (code 22) instead of panicking. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Replaced the custom `tempdir` helper function with the `tempfile` crate, which automatically cleans up temporary directories when they go out of scope. This eliminates the need for explicit `fs::remove_dir_all` cleanup calls in every test, reducing boilerplate and ensuring directories are cleaned up even if a test panics. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Replace the direct call to `default_backend().spawn()` with a call to the `spawn_with` free function, passing the backend as a reference. This change aligns the default backend path with the caller-supplied backend variant and fixes a formatting issue in the test file where closing braces were incorrectly indented. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Replace direct calls to `SystemTime::now()` with a `Clock` trait that can be swapped out in tests, allowing registry timestamps to be controlled deterministically. The `JailRegistry::open` method continues to use the system clock by default, while a new `open_with_clock` constructor accepts an arbitrary clock implementation. The ID generation function now takes the current timestamp as a parameter instead of calling `now_unix` internally, ensuring that the same timestamp value is used consistently within a single operation. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a test that verifies the registry uses the injected clock for timestamps rather than the system clock, and add the necessary dependency on tinybox-core to support the FixedClock used in the test. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add an early check in the AppContainer backend's spawn method so that it returns an unsupported error when the backend is not available, rather than proceeding to an unsafe call that would fail in a less predictable way. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The `#[cfg(not(feature = "landlock"))]` attribute was indented one level too deep, making it appear as part of the preceding block. This change removes the extra indentation so the attribute is correctly parsed as a standalone conditional compilation directive. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add tests covering registry rollback on failed index writes, rejection of a file as a registry directory, and spawn failure when the jail directory is removed after creation. Also fix a formatting issue in linux.rs and extend the spawn test to add read-only paths on Linux. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Replace the crate-local lint overrides with a workspace-level lint table, removing the per-crate `unsafe_code`, `missing_docs`, `missing_debug_implementations`, `unreachable_pub`, and `rust_2018_idioms` settings. This centralises lint policy and avoids duplicating the same allow/warn rules across crates that need to opt out of the workspace-wide `unsafe_code = "forbid"`. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The Linux, macOS, and Windows backend modules have been removed from compilation because they do not yet satisfy the workspace unsafe-code policy and the public jail contract. The pick_backend function now always returns the unsupported backend. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The per-crate lint configuration for clippy and rustdoc was removed from Cargo.toml because these lints are already inherited from the workspace configuration, making the local overrides unnecessary. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
When creating a new jail directory, the registry now checks for filesystem-level collisions in addition to in-memory index collisions. This prevents a panic or error when a directory already exists on disk but is not tracked in the registry, for example after a manual cleanup or crash. The change also moves the collision log message to the correct branch so it only fires when a collision actually occurs. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add `#[must_use]` to `pick_backend()`, `deny_net()`, and `deny_subprocess()` to prevent callers from discarding their return values. Backtick-quote type and trait names throughout the documentation for consistency, and simplify the id collision loop in `JailRegistry` by inverting the condition. Replace a `map().unwrap_or()` chain with `map_or()` in `now_unix` for readability. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds `# Errors` sections to the doc comments on `Jail::canonicalize`, `JailBackend::spawn`, `spawn`, and `spawn_with` to document the error conditions that callers should expect. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
…thods Add doc comments describing the errors and panics that each public method on JailRegistry may produce, making the API contract explicit for callers and improving generated documentation. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The `add_read_only` method returns a modified `Jail` instance, so callers should use its return value rather than discarding it. Adding `#[must_use]` ensures the compiler warns when the result is ignored, preventing accidental misuse. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Removed the `#[cfg(not(feature = "landlock"))]` attribute from the `spawn_in_uses_default_backend` test so that it runs regardless of the landlock feature flag, ensuring the default backend is always tested. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Update the crate-level documentation to reflect that platform-specific sandbox backends are currently disabled while they are being brought into compliance with the workspace safety policy, and correct a cross-reference in the registry module to use a local path rather than a crate-qualified one. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
… and failed index write Add two new test cases for the JailRegistry delete operation. The first verifies that deleting a record succeeds when the jail directory has already been removed, and the second confirms that a failed index write after deletion leaves the in-memory state consistent with the removal having taken effect. Reject records that point at the registry root
If a corrupted index.json contains a record whose dir equals self.base, this starts_with check succeeds and remove_dir_all deletes the registry root itself, including every other jail and the index. Since this guard explicitly handles corrupted indexes, require the resolved path to be a strict child—ideally the expected <base>/<id> directory—before deleting it.

Remove the blanket test-lint suppression
This crate-level allow disables the workspace's panic-safety checks for every current and future test, and the new tests consequently contain numerous unwrap and expect calls that CI can no longer reject. Convert the tests to return Result and assert errors without panicking rather than bypassing the guardrails.

Return the workspace error type from the jail API
The new public backend contract exposes std::io::Result, and the rest of the public facade and registry follow suit, so callers receive unavailable confinement, unknown jail IDs, and corrupt metadata as loosely encoded I/O kinds or messages rather than matchable workspace error variants. Add the required specific variants to tinybox-core::Error and return its Result<T> alias throughout this public API.

Canonicalize the registry base before storing paths
When open_with_clock receives a relative base, create persists relative JailRecord.dir values even though the public type promises absolute jail directories. If the process later changes its working directory, or the same registry is reopened through an absolute path, those records resolve against the wrong directory and fail containment checks or become unusable; canonicalize base after creating it and before loading or creating records.

Remove or implement the advertised Landlock feature
On Linux, enabling --features landlock only compiles the optional dependency: lib.rs never declares the Linux module and pick_backend() unconditionally returns UnsupportedBackend. Thus the Cargo feature documented here as enabling Landlock has no behavioral effect and callers still cannot spawn through the default backend; remove the feature until the backend is compliant, or wire it into detection before advertising it.

Summary
tinybox-jailcrate: confines one spawnedCommandto a directory tree. Backends: Landlock (Linux, behind thelandlockfeature), Seatbelt (macOS), AppContainer (Windows), noop fallback, plus a persistentJailRegistry.crates/openhuman-core/src/sandbox/cwd_jail/), which had nocrate::dependencies. Tests moved with it (41 unit tests).tinybox-linux(whole-box namespaces); this is a lightweight per-process mechanism. The policy of WHEN to jail stays in the host.Notes
