Summary

Adds LangfuseClient::send_otlp and LangfuseClient::otlp_endpoint, so an embedder can send OTLP/HTTP JSON traces through the same client, credentials and proxy mode it already uses for Langfuse.

Langfuse's legacy /api/public/ingestion batch API is deprecated. It is sunset on Langfuse Cloud on 2026-11-16 and is already unavailable on self-hosted v4 in the default events_only write mode. The OTLP endpoint (/api/public/otel/v1/traces) is the supported trace path. Scores sent as score-create remain supported, so send_batch and create_score are unchanged.

  • otlp_endpoint() derives the OTLP URL beside the configured ingestion endpoint:
    • direct: …/api/public/ingestion → …/api/public/otel/v1/traces
    • proxy: …/telemetry/langfuse/ingestion → …/telemetry/langfuse/otel/v1/traces, the path OpenHuman's backend already serves
  • send_otlp(body) posts a {"resourceSpans": [...]} request (for example one from trace_export::otlp::otlp_requests) with the client's Basic or Bearer auth. Any non-success status is an error.
  • Auth header construction is factored into one private helper shared with send_batch, with no behavior change.

Motivation: tinyrsi exports its improvement-loop traces through OpenHuman's embed (openhuman_embed::observe::langfuse). This lets that export move off the sunsetting endpoint without a second HTTP stack.

Validation

  • cargo test -p tinyagents-harness --lib langfuse: 17 passed. New tests cover the endpoint derivation (direct and proxy), a loopback request with path, Basic auth and an exact body, and a refused (413) request.
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: ok
  • cargo clippy -p tinyagents-harness --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings: ok

API changes

Additive: LangfuseClient::otlp_endpoint and LangfuseClient::send_otlp.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for submitting trace data to Langfuse using OTLP/HTTP JSON, either directly or through the TinyHumans proxy. Requests use the configured authentication, and unsuccessful submissions return an error.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Langfuse guidance with details on OTLP trace submission and the legacy ingestion API sunset date of November 16, 2026.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Langfuse client adds OTLP endpoint derivation and authenticated JSON trace submission. Batch requests use a shared authorization helper. Tests and documentation cover the new endpoints and request behavior.

The client derives direct and proxy OTLP trace paths and sends authenticated JSON requests. send_batch now uses the shared authorization helper. Tests cover endpoint derivation, Basic authentication, and an HTTP 413 response. The README lists the new methods and notes the legacy ingestion API sunset date.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 80ebd

The new OTLP trace sender can report traces as delivered when Langfuse rejected some spans. If the endpoint is misconfigured as http://, it also sends credentials in plaintext, as the existing batch path already does. Resolve or accept these issues before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 80ebd

The new trace transport reuses the configured destination and credentials without changing existing exporters. Unencrypted credential delivery remains possible with an HTTP configuration, but that behavior predates this PR. External consumers and server-side acceptance behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — With a remote HTTP configuration, an on-path attacker could observe trace bodies and reusable credentials. Exposure follows the configured Langfuse project credentials or backend token; actual token privileges and downstream tenant reach are not established. The PR demonstrates no additional credential authority or production caller exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The two retained findings concern credentials attached to requests using a configured HTTP URL. Base send_batch already accepted the same schemes and attached the same credentials. The new method inherits this condition; the comparison does not establish that this PR introduced or materially worsened its effective exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The authenticated egress boundary remains the configured Langfuse origin or backend proxy. Basic project credentials and Bearer proxy tokens are selected by client configuration, not by the submitted JSON. Server-side tenant routing and authorization enforcement are outside the inspected implementation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Callers must distinguish HTTP delivery from confirmed trace acceptance and handle uncertain outcomes before retrying. These are integration constraints, not demonstrated loss of a security audit guarantee: no production send_otlp dependency or server response contract was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require HTTPS for credentialed remote destinations, with an explicit narrowly scoped exception if local HTTP testing or development must remain supported.
  • proposed — Before using OTLP results to acknowledge durable or security-relevant trace retention, define response acceptance and partial-rejection semantics and caller recovery behavior against the deployed endpoint.

P2 Badge Add the Langfuse v4 ingestion header

When send_otlp targets Langfuse v4 directly, this request includes authentication and Content-Type but omits x-langfuse-ingestion-version: 4. Langfuse's v4-ready ingestion checklist requires that header; without it, telemetry may follow the legacy OTEL processing path and remain unavailable to real-time queries for several minutes, undermining the migration this method provides. Set the header on OTLP requests and assert it in the loopback test.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Set the Langfuse v4 ingestion-version header for direct OTLP requests.

On Langfuse v4, an OTLP request without x-langfuse-ingestion-version: 4 can remain unavailable in the UI for up to 15 minutes. send_otlp sets no such header. Set it for direct requests, and confirm whether the TinyHumans proxy forwards it before applying it to proxy requests. (langfuse.com)

Reject remote plaintext endpoints before attaching credentials.

normalize_langfuse_endpoint and normalize_proxy_endpoint accept any non-empty scheme and only append a path. Therefore a remote http:// base reaches send_otlp, which attaches Basic or Bearer credentials before sending. Reject non-loopback HTTP endpoints during normalization while preserving the loopback test exception.

The merge-base send_batch path already sent the same credentials to the configured scheme. Apply the guard to shared endpoint configuration rather than only to send_otlp.

Report OTLP span rejection even when HTTP returns 200.

An OTLP trace response can contain partialSuccess.rejectedSpans while returning HTTP 200. This branch returns Ok(parsed) for that response, so a caller can treat rejected spans as exported. Check for a nonzero rejected count and return an error that includes the server message. Do not automatically retry the complete request: the OTLP specification prohibits retrying a partial-success response. (opentelemetry.io)

security

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: This change adds `otlp_endpoint()` and `send_otlp()` to `LangfuseClient`, factoring credential attachment into a private `authorized()` helper reused by `send_batch`. The endpoint derivation only rewrites known suffix paths, auth is delegated to reqwest's own basic/bearer builders (so no manual header interpolation or secret logging), and the new tests exercise the loopback path including auth header and non-success status. The only caller-supplied strings are the base URL and keys, which already flowed into the existing client; nothing new reaches a dangerous sink from untrusted input. 1 file was not security-reviewed: crates/tinyagents-harness/src/observability/langfuse/README.md (prose or tabular data). _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `7d97e8511487`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds `otlp_endpoint`/`send_otlp`/`authorized` to `LangfuseClient` and refactors `send_batch` to use the shared `authorized` helper, with three new tests in `mod_tests.rs` that assert the derived endpoint string, the actual HTTP path/auth/body over a loopback socket, and the error path on a non-success status. Those tests pin the new behaviour against regression and the refactor keeps `send_batch`'s auth behaviour identical, so the change looks sound; the one gap I noted is that the direct-vs-proxy endpoint derivation only asserts exact strings for the two known suffixes, but the fallback branch (`self.endpoint.clone()`) is not exercised — I could not see how `direct`/`proxy` construct `endpoint`, so I am not raising it as a defect. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `7d97e8511487`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The description matches the diff: `otlp_endpoint` derives the OTLP path from the normalized ingestion endpoint for both direct and proxy modes, `send_otlp` posts the JSON body with the client's auth and errors on any non-success status, and `authorized` is a behaviour-preserving extraction of the header logic already in `send_batch`. The new unit tests cover endpoint derivation, path/auth/body on a loopback request, and the 413 failure path, and the module README is updated alongside.
