fix(security): let a signed-in desktop restart without waiting on itself - #8559
Relaunching a signed-in desktop hangs at startup and never becomes ready. This PR makes credential reads that no one can approve skip the keyring, so the restart boots.
The deadlock
TinySecurity's first load (modules/security/host_callbacks.rs#ensure_loaded) holds SECURITY_CALLBACK_LOADS for the whole load.
Inside that load, the module config is built twice: by the loader (modules/ops.rs#runtime_module_config) and by the callback factory. Since feat(security): turn the Jev judge on by default #8547 both include the judge: judge::resolve.
With no host-provided route, the judge reads the backend credential: stored_route → tinyhumans_bearer → resolve_backend_credential.
That lock is held by step 1, and the tokio mutex is not reentrant. The core hangs with no error, right after tinybus logs "in-process modules are inside the host trust boundary".
A fresh install, or a sign-in in the running process, doesn't hit it: no token is in the keyring when TinySecurity first loads. The next launch after signing in always does.
The second blocker
Before the listener is up, boot reads the session profile twice, and each read goes to the keyring and raises a prompt that no RPC can answer yet:
the memory engine bind (core/runtime/context_store_init.rs). It is logged only: the binding isn't stored, and every memory call binds again;
The judge.judge::resolve takes only a route the host supplied (security_judge) and reads no stored credential. All three callers (the loader, the load factory and host_callbacks::module_config) build TinySecurity's config, so the stored-credential lookup (stored_route) is gone rather than kept for one of them.
The two boot reads before the listener. They run inside credentials::profiles::without_keyring(future), a task-local scope where every keyring operation returns a consent-class "held back" error without reaching TinySecurity:
a profile the keyring keeps reads as unavailable;
a write is refused, never moved into the encrypted document.
A cached secret (fix(credentials): ask for the session token once per launch, not on every read #8553) is still served there; a cold read doesn't wait behind another read of the same entry.
Memory binds on its first use after the listener is up. The Sentry user is bound once the token is read after preflight.
The lock isn't made reentrant, and TinySecurity is unchanged.
Trade-off
The judge runs only with a host-supplied route until tinysecurity#54. Without one, the judge is off for that process, whatever credentials are stored. TinySecurity takes the judge's config once, at init, and there's no path to reconfigure it later. Before this PR a desktop that was already signed in hung at launch, and the judge was never reconfigured after an in-process sign-in either. The long-term fix is a lazy judge credential in TinySecurity (Related: tinyhumansai/tinysecurity#54).
Also fixes a clippy -D warnings hit that #8553 introduced in credentials/profiles/keychain_tests.rs:122: get(name).is_none() becomes !contains_key(name). Main's clippy count goes from 19 to 18.
Tests
modules/security/judge_tests.rs: only_the_hosts_own_route_turns_the_judge_on, replacing the two tests of the stored-credential lookup.
Unit tests in credentials/profiles/keychain_tests.rs:
nothing_reaches_the_keyring_while_it_is_held_back (red control: remove the guard);
Desktop sign-in E2E (tests/desktop_sign_in_fixture.rs, run by scripts/ci/security-native-fixture.sh): the approve case answers the prompt its final auth-state read raises, so the restart case now runs. Restart over the signed-in workspace reaches ready and reads the token back.
Red controls:
main's judge.rs, host_callbacks.rs and ops.rs (the stored-credential judge): restart's preflight never completes;
context_store_init.rs from main: restart never reaches ready.
native_fixture_rejects_a_tampered_module, which hangs on main, passes.

Startup no longer prompts for keyring access during memory and session setup. Cached secrets remain available, while uncached secrets are deferred until secret preflight.
Session identity binding is retried after startup credentials are prepared.
Changes
Security judging now uses a route supplied by the host. Stored credentials no longer provide a route, and judging remains disabled when no route is supplied.
Relaunching a signed-in desktop never became ready. Since the session
moved into the keyring, two things in the boot waited on answers no one
could give.
TinySecurity's first load holds its load lock while it builds the module
config, and the judge's route read the stored backend credential, which
is read through TinySecurity, so the load waited on itself. The load now
takes only a route the host supplied; the judge stays off for that
process otherwise, until the module can fetch its credential lazily
(tinyhumansai/tinysecurity#54).
Before the listener is up, boot also read the session from the keyring,
for the memory engine bind (logged only; every memory call binds again)
and the Sentry user bind, raising a prompt no one could answer. Those
reads now run without the keyring: a profile the keyring keeps reads as
unavailable there, and a write is refused, never moved into the
document.
A secret this process already cached is still served there, but a cold
read doesn't wait behind another read of the same entry.

Diagnostics and supporting details
Full summary
Pull request purpose (title): fix(security): let a signed-in desktop restart without waiting on itself. A signed-in desktop that relaunches hangs at startup: TinySecurity's first load holds `SECURITY_CALLBACK_LOADS`, and the judge resolved inside that load read a stored backend credential, whose keychain read routes through `security::client` → `ensure_loaded` and waits on the same non-reentrant lock. A second blocker is boot-time reads of the session profile before the listener is up, which raise keyring prompts no RPC can answer yet. This pull request ("fix(security): let a signed-in desktop restart without waiting on itself") makes `judge::resolve` synchronous and host-route-only, removing the stored-credential path from all three callers, and adds a task-local `without_keyring` scope in which keyring reads, writes, deletes and operations are refused with a consent-class `HeldBack` error before reaching TinySecurity; cached secrets are still served and cold reads skip the per-entry gate. Boot reads in `context_store_init.rs` run inside that scope, and the session user bind moves to `finish_secret_preflight_credentials` via a new `bind_session_user`. The latest revision additionally expands the `JudgeMode` documentation in `security_mode.rs` to enumerate the conditions under which the judge runs.

Completeness: Complete Test assessment: Test coverage is assessed from changed tests and lane evidence; execution is not claimed without trusted check data.
Features
Added — `without_keyring` task-local scope and `HeldBack` consent error: Credential reads, writes, deletes and keyring operations performed inside the scope never reach TinySecurity; they fail with a consent-class `HeldBack` error instead, so a process that cannot answer a prompt never waits on one. (crates/openhuman-core/src/credentials/profiles/keychain.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/credentials/profiles.rs)
Modified — Held-back guard on the keyring read gate: A held-back read is still served from the process cache, and otherwise fails with `HeldBack` before acquiring the per-entry gate, so it never waits behind a read that may be blocked on a prompt and never fills the cache. (crates/openhuman-core/src/credentials/profiles/keychain.rs)
Modified — Held-back refusal on store, delete and keyring operations: Writes and deletes attempted while held back are refused before anything is asked or forgotten, leaving the previously cached secret intact and keeping the write out of the encrypted document; the operation path logs the refusal with the user id. (crates/openhuman-core/src/credentials/profiles/keychain.rs)
Modified — Boot-time credential reads wrapped in the held-back scope: The memory engine bind and the session user bind no longer raise keyring prompts before the listener is up; memory binds on later use, and the session user bind is logged as deferred. (crates/openhuman-core/src/core/runtime/context_store_init.rspub async fn init_stores(cfg: &crate::config::Config, domains: crate::core::runt)
Added — Session user bind moved to the post-preflight step: A restored signed-in user's Sentry scope and identity slot are populated once the secret preflight has loaded startup credentials, instead of being skipped because boot could not reach the keyring. (crates/openhuman-core/src/credentials/session_state.rspub async fn build_session_state(config: &Config) -> Result<AuthStateResponse, S, crates/openhuman-core/src/core/runtime/subscribers.rspub(crate) async fn finish_secret_preflight_credentials()
Modified — Judge resolved synchronously from the host-supplied route only: `judge::resolve` no longer awaits a stored backend credential, removing the keychain read that closed the deadlock cycle during TinySecurity's load; a process without a host-supplied route has the judge off whatever credentials are stored. (crates/openhuman-core/src/modules/security/judge.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/modules/ops.rsasync fn runtime_module_config(config: &Config, id: &str) -> serde_json::Value {, crates/openhuman-core/src/modules/security/host_callbacks.rspub(in crate::modules) async fn ensure_loaded()
Modified — Documented route-only judge behavior and its preconditions: Configuration docs and the embed runtime builder now state the conditions under which the judge runs and that stored credentials do not turn it on, matching the new resolution behavior. (crates/openhuman-core/src/config/schema/security_mode.rspub enum SecurityMode {, crates/openhuman-core/src/config/schema/security_mode.rspub enum SecurityJudgeDialect {, crates/openhuman-embed/src/runtime/builder.rsimpl RuntimeBuilder {)
Added — Process-static entry for `KEYRING_HELD_BACK`: The new task-local marker is registered as category A with its own reason and a verification-test reference in the process-statics inventory. (scripts/ci/process-statics.json)

Lane summary: The diff only rewrites doc comments in `security_mode.rs`. Each claim I checked against the actual implementation in `modules/security/judge.rs` holds: `resolve` takes only a host-supplied route (`config.security_judge.clone()?`); `wanted` requires `enforces()`, `JudgeMode::On` and non-`LocalOnly` privacy; `key_accepted` uses `4..=4096` (inclusive) with a non-blank check; `endpoint_accepted` rejects only endpoints longer than 4096 bytes (so exactly 4096 is allowed, matching "at most"), and requires HTTPS or HTTP on a parsed loopback IP with no username, password, query or fragment; `origins` is exactly Operator/Copilot/SubAgent. The `Debug` redaction and the absence of `Serialize` match the struct's wording. No code changed, so no caller or test can regress. Lane summary: The only change since the last review is the doc comment on `JudgeMode`/`SecurityJudgeRoute` in `config/schema/security_mode.rs`, and it now lines up with the code it describes (`wanted` plus `build` in `modules/security/judge.rs`: enforcement, judge mode, privacy mode, 4–4096-byte non-blank key, ≤4096-byte HTTPS-or-loopback endpoint with no credentials, query or fragment). It restates the same host-supplied-route trade-off the pull request body already documents, so the description and diff agree and there is nothing to flag. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `dfb679175270`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
Runtime initialization now holds back keyring access during selected startup operations. Secret preflight binds the restored session user after credential seeding. TinySecurity judge resolution is synchronous and uses the host-configured route rather than deriving a route from stored credentials.

resolve is synchronous and uses the configured security_judge route. Stored-credential route derivation is removed. Callers and tests use the synchronous resolver, and documentation states that stored credentials do not enable judging.
Stored credentials alone no longer enable the judge, so eligible requests may need human approval unless the host supplies a route. The route documentation also needs clarification. These are bounded risks that should be accepted or corrected before merging.

This test only classifies a constructed error. The read tests stop at a separate guard, so removing the mutation guard would leave them passing. Test Set and Delete under without_keyring, and verify that a refused profile save does not change the document.

Boot holds back keyring reads, so a signed-in restart skipped the Sentry
user and identity binding. The secret preflight now binds them after it
loads the startup credentials. A held-back write or delete is refused
before it touches the read cache, so it no longer evicts a cached secret.
The judge docs now say it runs only on a route the host supplies.
Its threads are answered and resolved; the follow-up commit addresses them.

A host route alone doesn't turn the judge on: security has to be enforced, privacy can't be local-only, and the module has to accept the route's key and endpoint. Scheduled and remote callers are never judged.

Since feat(security): turn the Jev judge on by default #8547 both include the judge:judge::resolve.stored_route→tinyhumans_bearer→resolve_backend_credential.keychain_load_secrets→security::client→ensure_loaded, which waits forSECURITY_CALLBACK_LOADS.A fresh install, or a sign-in in the running process, doesn't hit it: no token is in the keyring when TinySecurity first loads. The next launch after signing in always does.
The second blocker
Before the listener is up, boot reads the session profile twice, and each read goes to the keyring and raises a prompt that no RPC can answer yet:
core/runtime/context_store_init.rs). It is logged only: the binding isn't stored, and every memory call binds again; The fix
judge::resolvetakes only a route the host supplied (security_judge) and reads no stored credential. All three callers (the loader, the load factory andhost_callbacks::module_config) build TinySecurity's config, so the stored-credential lookup (stored_route) is gone rather than kept for one of them.credentials::profiles::without_keyring(future), a task-local scope where every keyring operation returns a consent-class "held back" error without reaching TinySecurity:A cached secret (fix(credentials): ask for the session token once per launch, not on every read #8553) is still served there; a cold read doesn't wait behind another read of the same entry.
Also fixes a clippy
