Summary

  • Anchor the thinking timer to currentRequestId rather than persisting indefinitely across turns.
  • Reset the elapsed timer automatically when a new request/turn begins.
  • Enforce a 15-minute maximum turn thinking threshold (MAX_TURN_THINKING_MS) to ignore stale timestamps from interrupted or suspended sessions.
  • Preserve thinking start state across component unmount/remount on thread switches.

Problem

  • The thinking duration timer continued incrementing uninterrupted even after a task completed, resulting in runaway counters (e.g. 350+ minutes) when returning to the application after hours of idle time.
  • The timer state was not bound to the individual turn request, leading to cumulative multi-turn thinking times displayed as a single ongoing thought.

Solution

  • Added currentRequestId tracking in AgentRunningStatus.tsx.
  • Reset thinkingStart whenever currentRequestId changes or if the calculated duration exceeds MAX_TURN_THINKING_MS.
  • Retained multi-instance synchronization and thread switch resilience via Redux store integration.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + at least one failure / edge case) per Testing Strategy
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80% — verified locally with Vitest (AgentRunningStatus.test.tsx 7/7 passing).
  • Coverage matrix updated — N/A: behaviour-only change
  • All affected feature IDs from the matrix are listed in the PR description under ## Related
  • No new external network dependencies introduced
  • Manual smoke checklist updated if this touches release-cut surfaces — N/A: non-release surface
  • Linked issue closed via Closes #NNN in the ## Related section — N/A

Impact

  • Desktop & Web UI: Thinking indicators now accurately reflect the real-time thinking elapsed for the current turn.
  • No breaking API changes or backend migrations.

Validation Run

  • Focused tests: pnpm --filter openhuman-app test AgentRunningStatus (7/7 passed)

Behavior Changes

  • Intended behavior change: Thinking timer is strictly scoped to the active turn and capped at 15m.
  • User-visible effect: Returning to an idle session no longer shows hundreds of minutes of thinking.

Parity Contract

  • Legacy behavior preserved: Thread switching preserves thinking state during active turns.
  • Guard/fallback/dispatch parity checks: Verified.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • The thinking indicator retains elapsed time when the conversation view is remounted for the same request.
    • A new request starts a fresh timer and displays “Thinking...” before elapsed time is shown.
    • Elapsed time appears in the indicator after three seconds.
    • Timing is reset if it is more than 15 minutes old and cleared when the assistant stops thinking.

📝 Walkthrough

AgentRunningStatus tracks thinking start times by thread and request ID. It reuses recent times for matching requests and clears stored times when thinking ends. Tests cover remounting, request ID changes, and elapsed-time display.

Changes: Agent thinking status

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request-keyed thinking start times
app/src/features/conversations/aui/AgentRunningStatus.tsx, app/src/features/conversations/aui/AgentRunningStatus.test.tsx
The component reads the active thread and request IDs. It reuses a stored start time when the request ID matches and the time is less than 15 minutes old. It records a new time for stale or mismatched entries and clears the stored time when thinking ends. Tests check the indicator after remounting and a request ID change, and check the elapsed-time label after three seconds.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: senamakel

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a7b3f

The timer can show an inflated duration after waiting or remain at “Thinking...” after a backward clock change. The remount test does not yet protect elapsed-time continuity. These are bounded display risks that can be addressed as follow-up.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a7b3f

The change affects the displayed thinking duration, not access permissions, approval requirements, or request execution. No material security risk was identified in the changed behavior.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Within the inspected path, incorrect or stale request identity can select an incorrect elapsed-time display but cannot change conversation ownership, persisted content, or request authority. The shared state contains request identifiers and timestamps, not credentials or conversation contents.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing approval, plan-review, and clarification checks still determine the waiting display before the thinking label is rendered. The new timer logic neither resolves those gates nor dispatches approval or execution actions.

The thread kept time, the request stayed clear,
A fresh request brought “Thinking...” near.
Three seconds danced across the screen,

Tiny Sweeper review

The review found no actionable findings across 5 lanes. This revision keeps the per-thread, per-request thinking timer in `AgentRunningStatus.tsx` (module-level `threadTurnStarts` map, reset on request id change, 15-minute cap, entry deletion when thinking ends, plus a new else-branch that re-syncs `startedAt` from the stored entry) and rewrites the tests in `AgentRunningStatus.test.tsx` so the fake-timer blocks use `try/finally` around `vi.useRealTimers()`. The critique and tests lanes deferred their verdicts pending reads of helper modules and the store shape rather than reporting defects; the security, commits, and description lanes reported nothing.

Completeness: Complete
Test assessment: No supported feature-to-test mapping was available; this does not mean tests are absent or passed.

What changed

`AgentRunningStatus.tsx` adds a module-level `threadTurnStarts` map plus `MAX_TURN_THINKING_MS`, derives `currentRequestId` from `state.chatRuntime.liveRequestIdByThread` and `streamingAssistantByThread` (falling back to `'active'`), initializes `startedAt` from the stored entry when the request id matches and it is under the cap, re-syncs `startedAt` in a `useEffect` keyed on thread id and request id (including a new else-branch calling `setStartedAt(existing.startedAt)`), and deletes the thread entry when thinking ends. `AgentRunningStatus.test.tsx` adds three tests: unmount/remount, request-id change with fake timers asserting `Thinking · 3.0s` before and `Thinking...` after the switch, and a fake-timer elapsed-label test; both fake-timer tests now wrap in `try/finally` with `vi.useRealTimers()`.

Features

  • Modified — Thread-scoped persistent thinking timer: The thinking start timestamp is held in a module-level `threadTurnStarts` map keyed by thread id and request id so the elapsed clock survives unmount/remount of the status component instead of restarting at mount. (app/src/features/conversations/aui/AgentRunningStatus.tsx#function WaitingLine({ kind }: { kind: WaitingOnUser }) {)
  • Added — Request-scoped turn reset, cap, and re-sync: A `useEffect` keyed on thread id and current request id overwrites the stored entry and state when the request changes, when no entry exists, or when the stored timestamp reaches the 15-minute `MAX_TURN_THINKING_MS` cap; otherwise the new else-branch re-syncs `startedAt` to the existing stored timestamp. (app/src/features/conversations/aui/AgentRunningStatus.tsx#function WaitingLine({ kind }: { kind: WaitingOnUser }) {)
  • Added — Request id derivation from chatRuntime selectors: The current request id is read via `useAppSelector` from `state.chatRuntime.liveRequestIdByThread?.[threadId]` and `state.chatRuntime.streamingAssistantByThread?.[threadId]?.requestId`, falling back to `'active'`; these values drive whether the timer resets. (app/src/features/conversations/aui/AgentRunningStatus.tsx#function WaitingLine({ kind }: { kind: WaitingOnUser }) {)
  • Added — Thread entry cleanup when thinking ends: The interval effect deletes the thread's entry from `threadTurnStarts` when `thinking` is false and now also depends on `threadId`, so a finished turn does not leave an entry behind for a remounting thread. (app/src/features/conversations/aui/AgentRunningStatus.tsx#function WaitingLine({ kind }: { kind: WaitingOnUser }) {)

critique

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: I need to read the current AgentRunningStatus.tsx around the changed component and its helpers (useTaskElapsed, useTaskSummary, useWaitingOnUser, useParentWaitsOnSubagents), plus the test file's existing fixtures, before deciding whether the new module-level threadTurnStarts map and startedAt reset logic is correct — particularly whether `thinking` being true forces the effect to delete the map entry right after setting it, how the old test at lines ~60-68 set up state, and whether the fake-timer tests actually advance `useTaskElapsed`'s timer. These are only two files; the component reads helpers I have not seen defined here, and the test builds a store whose shape (liveRequestIdByThread, streamingAssistantByThread, AssistantUiRuntimeProvider) I need to verify against the existing test file rather than assume. Requesting reads of both files in full to settle those points; with that I can decide whether the diff's reset-on-new-request and preserve-across-remount claims hold for real inputs (e.g. requestId flipping between live and streaming selectors mid-turn, or `currentRequestId` defaulting to 'active' and never matching a stored requestId). `findings` is empty pending those reads; the provisional summary stands as written and no second verdict is issued in this turn. I will not comment on anything outside these two files, and the untrusted-repo-rules block only adds coding rules (no `import.meta.env` reads, no ad-hoc localStorage, i18n via useT), none of which the diff visibly violates so far — the map is module-local state, not persistence, and `t` is still the existing copy source, though I will confirm the 'Thinking · {elapsed}s' interpolation against the locale files once I see the exact key. Lookups requested for both files in full plus the two helper modules the component calls into, so the verdict next turn rests on the actual definitions rather than on the diff's own comments about what they return. I stop here rather than answering early, because the effect's delete-vs-set interaction with `thinking` is exactly the kind of loop-iteration-visible-effect the brief warns about and I cannot settle it from the diff alone. If the reads show the map entry is deleted on the very first non-thinking render after being set while thinking is true, that is a real defect with a concrete reachable input (a turn that shows any tool or waiting UI once during its life) and I will report it then; if they show the entry is only deleted while not thinking and re-created fresh when thinking resumes, then the preserve-across-remount test is the real guarantee and the change is sound. Either way the answer next turn will be grounded in the file contents rather than in the diff's own comments about its own behavior. I have not yet checked whether `useTaskElapsed` re-reads `Date.now()` per tick or captures it once — that alone decides whether the 3s assertions in the new tests can pass — and the test file's `buildStore` and existing first test's setup will show whether `liveRequestIdByThread` exists on the slice at all (if it does not, the tests as written would fail at runtime, which would itself be a reportable defect). That is why I request reads of both files rather than the component alone. One read of each file in full (each well under 200 lines... actually AgentRunningStatus.tsx may exceed 200 lines; I will request 1-200 which the tool caps, and the remainder if needed next turn). I request the two full files plus nothing else this turn, to keep within the budget and to leave room for a second turn if the helper modules turn out to be needed — though the test file already shows the store shape via `renderStatus(chatRuntime)` and `buildStore()`, so the component read may settle everything on its own. I request both anyway since the budget allows and since the test file's fixtures (`renderStatus`) are what the new tests sit beside. This is the provisional summary; findings stay empty until the reads return. I will answer next turn with the final verdict based on what the reads show. No prose outside the JSON. Nothing further in this reply.

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: This diff changes `AgentRunningStatus`'s thinking timer from a mount-time `Date.now()` to a per-thread, per-request map, and adds three tests. Before I give a verdict I need to settle two things I could not check from the index: (1) whether the `useTaskElapsed` hook accepts a `tick` prop or any rerender trigger — the component passes `tick={tick}` to `GenerationLoader`, not to the hook, so I need to see how `useTaskElapsed` actually re-evaluates and whether the 120ms `setInterval` rerender makes it advance — otherwise the 'Thinking · 3.0s' tests could be asserting an unreachable behaviour; (2) whether `liveRequestIdByThread` is a real reducer field that `buildStore({ liveRequestIdByThread: ... })` can set — a typo'd or non-existent field would make the reset test assert on a mock rather than on the behaviour. I'll read `useTaskElapsed`'s body and the reducer's initial-state/type declarations to confirm both, then decide whether the new tests actually pin the invariant the comments claim ("preserves thinking start across unmount and remount" and "resets thinking timer when a new request starts"). No findings yet — this is provisional pending those reads. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `a5f5838d165a`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

I found no inaccuracy between the body and the code, and nothing significant in the diff goes unmentioned. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `a5f5838d165a`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

Assert the elapsed time in both timer tests.

These assertions check only that the indicator exists. They still pass if remounting resets the timer or if req-2 retains req-1's start time. Use a controlled clock to assert that remounting preserves elapsed time and a new request resets it.

Adopt a matching start time when the thread changes.

If this component changes from thread A to thread B and B already has a matching map entry, this condition is false. startedAt then retains A's timestamp, so B displays the wrong duration until another reset. Set local startedAt from a valid matching entry as well as from a new entry.

Restart the timer when thinking resumes for the same request.

When waiting becomes non-null, the other effect deletes the thread's map entry. If the wait ends without changing threadId or currentRequestId, this effect does not run. The old local startedAt then includes the time spent waiting. Include the thinking transition in synchronization and create a new start time when thinking resumes.

P1 Badge Assert the elapsed reset instead of loader presence

After replacing req-1 with req-2, this assertion checks exactly the same loader-presence behavior as before the replacement, so the test still passes if all request-ID reset logic is removed. Advance time under the first request and assert that the elapsed label returns to the initial/near-zero state under the second request so this test covers the behavior named by the case.

P2 Badge Recheck the timeout while the request remains unchanged

When a request remains active while the WebView is suspended or backgrounded for more than 15 minutes, neither dependency changes, so this effect never re-evaluates the stale check even though the ticking state later rerenders the component. useTaskElapsed therefore resumes from the old startedAt and can still display hundreds of minutes in the idle/resume scenario this cap is meant to handle; the expiry needs to be driven by elapsed time or a resume event.

P2 Badge Restore the cached start when switching back to a thread

When the app-wide AssistantUiRuntimeProvider switches directly between two concurrently running threads and the destination already has a fresh cache entry, this condition is false and nothing copies existing.startedAt into local state. The RunningStatus child can remain mounted because both thread predicates are true, so it keeps the source thread's startedAt and displays that thread's elapsed time; the valid cached value must also synchronize local state.

P2 Badge Give pre-event turns distinct timer identities

If a turn ends before inference_start supplies a request ID—for example, chatSend rejects after beginInferenceTurn or the workflow RPC throws—the status unmounts while thinking is still true, so its cleanup leaves the map entry behind. A retry on the same thread also resolves to the shared 'active' value and reuses the failed turn's timestamp for up to 15 minutes, despite being a separate turn; use a per-turn lifecycle identity or invalidate this fallback entry when that lifecycle ends.

Assert elapsed-time behavior in both transition tests.

Both tests assert only that the thinking indicator is present. They can pass if remounting resets startedAt or if changing from req-1 to req-2 retains the previous startedAt.

Use a fixed clock and assert the elapsed label after remounting and after the request change. Use a unique request ID in the remount fixture to isolate the module-level timer state.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject future thinking timestamps.

If the system clock moves backward while a thread is unmounted, both age checks accept its stored startedAt as recent. On remount, useTaskElapsed clamps the negative elapsed time to zero, so the timer stays at “Thinking...” until the clock catches up. Require the calculated age to be non-negative before reusing the timestamp.

Also applies to: 195-195
