feat(config): ConfigSource port with file and document sources (S4b) - #7260
Conversation
Moved the config loading logic out of a single implementation file into dedicated source modules for files and documents, leaving the load entry point to orchestrate them. This keeps each source's parsing and resolution concerns separate so new sources can be added without growing the shared loader. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Snapshot reloads now resolve the config through the source abstraction so shared backends read the scope's config document instead of the local file, while bootstrap tables still come from the file. The first load of a process keeps its existing behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

The thread-local test seam for forcing the document source now lives in a dedicated tests_support file instead of being inlined in the source module, keeping the production code free of test-only scaffolding. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds a README section describing the `ConfigSource` port in `load/source/`, covering `FileConfigSource` and `DocumentConfigSource`, the file-first behaviour of `load_or_init`, and the rule that bootstrap tables are always re-applied from the file. Moved the file-based config source out of the source module into a dedicated file module and added test support helpers alongside it. This keeps the source loading logic organized as more source types are added. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

…esting Add tests asserting that a document-backed config keeps secrets readable after a reload and that forced document sources nest and restore their previous scope on drop. Also apply rustfmt to the surrounding load code. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The json-write baseline entry now points at the file where the temp file OpenOptions call actually lives after the config load code was split up, so the CI check stops flagging a stale location. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Branch configuration was being read from the wrong source during load, so overrides in the branch section were ignored. The loader now pulls branch values from the branch config and merges them as intended. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Added a README describing how configuration is loaded, covering the branch, document, and file source stages. This makes the loading pipeline easier to understand for contributors working on config schema changes. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add tests asserting that a present but malformed document is reported as an error rather than treated as absence, and that a document which fails to parse leaves the bootstrap file untouched. The docs and comments are updated to describe this behaviour, and a formatting nit in the file source is fixed. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Extracted the thread lock map type into a named alias so the static declaration reads more clearly, and dropped a redundant return in the drain target match. Added profiles/surface_tests.rs to the gated test allowlist so the CI check passes. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Summary
ConfigSourceport.FileConfigSourceis today'sconfig.tomlpath,DocumentConfigSourceis aconfig/{scope}document on a shared (multi-tenant) storage backend.load/atomic_commit.rs, the.bak,0600, fsync and corruption recovery, and the file stays hand-editable.[storage]is stripped from every document write and re-applied from the file on every document read.SaasConfigand all SaaS files are untouched.Problem
Plan 4h wants cloud deployments to keep per-scope config in the storage backend instead of a per-user
config.toml, without forking the loader, migrations, secret encryption or recovery.Solution
config/schema/load/source/: theConfigSourcetrait (exists, read, write),FileConfigSource(the old read-with-recovery and temp-file-plus-commit_replacementwrite, moved verbatim) andDocumentConfigSource.config, id = scope. Text, not a JSON tree: lossless for every TOML value, one parser, and secrets stayenc2:inside the text. It is a deliberate choice over the file driver's blob API too, which has no.bak/0600/fsync-then-rename contract, so desktop keepsatomic_commit.rsas the plan asks.Config::save,Config::load_from_config_path(snapshot reload) andload_or_init's existing-config branch go through the source. The first load of a process runs before any backend is installed, so it reads the file (the bootstrap rule); the debug-dump loader always reads the file. A document read with no document yet falls back to the file (a first run seeds from it) and the next save creates the document.enc2:) under the scope's data key from the storageKeyProvider(the key the scope's other secrets use, derived from the shared master key), so any node of a deployment can read it;Config::saveskips the process-local field encryption for a document source. No key means fail closed.exists()is fallible so an outage never reads as an empty config.storage::installed_is_shared()(MongoDB) and the scope resolves; otherwise, and on any scope error (SaaS with no profile), the file. No desktop build changes behaviour.savere-serialises the wholeConfig, so comments are not preserved. A test pins that, and that hand edits to values survive.Submission Checklist
.bakwith the previous bytes, no temp leftovers,0600; a save keeps a hand-edited value but drops the comment (pinned); a document contains no plaintext, no bootstrap table and no credentialed URL; a copied ciphertext does not open under another scope and a wrong master key fails closed; a malformed bootstrap file is an error; nested forced sources restore; a document read overrules any[storage]in the document with the file's; no document falls back to the file; two scopes on one memory backend are isolated;Config::save+load_from_config_paththrough a forced document source leave the file untouched and keep the file's[storage]; no shared backend keeps the file.Impact
