fix(search): start re-auth on a rejected session and name rejected search keys - #7163
Conversation
Update the vendored submodule pointers for tinyagents, tinybox, tinybus and tinysearch to their latest revisions. Auto-committed-on: macbook Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Search now maps provider and backend 401s to actionable messages instead of a generic failure, and a rejected managed session publishes SessionExpired so the user is prompted to sign in again. The `limit` argument is also accepted as an alias for `max_results`. Auto-committed-on: macbook Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add tests asserting that a managed-search 401 on the session emits a SessionExpired event so re-authentication starts, while a rejected TinyHumans API key does not sign the user out. Auto-committed-on: macbook Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The test helper now uses tinybus::EventReceiver instead of the removed Receiver alias, keeping the search tool tests compiling against the current tinybus API. Auto-committed-on: macbook Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Wrap the exhausts_providers assertion in the backend credential test across multiple lines so it fits the formatter's line width. No behaviour change. Auto-committed-on: macbook Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
These gitlinks were checkpointed from submodules left at another branch's commits; this change only moves tinysearch. Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Make backend-auth handling shared and credential-aware
When search is invoked through the registered RPC/MCP controllers rather than TinySearchTool, this special handling is never reached: tools/schemas/web_search.rs::run_role_tool_with still maps execute_tool failures only through user_facing_error. Consequently openhuman.tools_web_{search,answer,contents} returns “sign-in has expired” without publishing SessionExpired (and MCP dispatch bypasses core::invoke entirely), leaving the stale session and no re-auth prompt; API-key runtimes on the same path are also incorrectly told to sign in because this arm hard-codes false. Put the credential-aware mapping and recovery in the shared host call path or apply it to the controller path too.

Avoid the process-global bus in per-test Tokio runtimes
When the lib tests run serially (the repository's scripts/test-rust-with-mock.sh passes --test-threads=1), one of these new tests can initialize BUS and then drop its per-test Tokio runtime before the positive session-expiry test runs. core/bus.rs::init explicitly documents that the process singleton remains attached to that dead reactor, so the later receiver can miss the SessionExpired publication and make the focused/full suite order-dependent. Exercise this through bus_testing::isolated_bus (or inject a publisher) rather than initializing the global bus in either test.

Test the limit alias for max_results
Accepting limit as an alias for max_results is a behaviour change a caller can observe, and it is the one part of this diff with no coverage — the tests in the diff only cover the error-message and session-expiry paths. A test asserting that {"limit": 3} yields 3 results (and that max_results still wins when both are present) would pin it.

Cover the search 401 sign-in flow end to end
The new BACKEND_UNAUTHORIZED path has an external surface: the user-visible message returned to the model and the SessionExpired event that the UI turns into a sign-in prompt. No end-to-end test drives it. The lexical candidates (harness-search-tool-flow.spec.ts, tests/agent_harness_e2e.rs) mention unrelated text ('source', 'limit') and none exercise a managed-search 401. A test would need a mock backend that returns a tinysearch.backend_unauthorized error for a search tool call and then assert the sign-in prompt appears (or, with a configured API key, that it does not).

Test the limit alias for max_results
The alias is implemented, but the test suite does not exercise tool execution with limit and verify that the rendered result count uses it. A future change to argument handling or rendering could silently make the alias inert; add a behavior test covering the alias, including its interaction with max_results.
Additional e2e observation
Test the limit alias for max_results
[RULE] e2e-uncovered
The limit alias is an external contract: a client or model calling the search tool with limit instead of max_results now gets the requested cap. No end-to-end test drives this. The candidate lines mentioning "limit" in tests/agent_harness_e2e.rs are about the tool-call iteration limit, not this argument. A test would have to invoke the search tool through the running harness with {"limit": 1} and assert the result is capped at 1. Still unfixed since the prior revision; only inline unit tests were added.

Test the limit alias for max_results
The new limit alias is not covered by the tests. Add a tool-level test that passes limit and verifies the rendered result count, including its interaction with max_results precedence and the existing clamp.

Test the limit alias for max_results
[RULE] missing-test-coverage
The alias was added and carries the comment 'limit is the module's alias for max_results', but no test in tools_tests.rs passes limit and asserts it takes effect; the branch can regress silently. This finding was raised on an earlier revision and the code changed without adding the test, so it still stands.

Cover the search 401 sign-in flow end to end
The added test calls on_backend_unauthorized directly, so it does not verify that a BACKEND_UNAUTHORIZED returned by execute_tool reaches this branch, that credential detection selects the correct message, or that the SessionExpired event is emitted during an actual search invocation. Add an end-to-end tool execution test for the managed-backend 401 path.

[RULE] missing-integration-test
The added test calls on_backend_unauthorized directly, so it does not verify that a real BACKEND_UNAUTHORIZED error returned by execute_tool reaches this branch, that the configured credential is classified correctly, or that ToolResult::error contains the sign-in guidance. Add an execution-level test with a backend 401 and assert both the SessionExpired event and the returned user-facing result.
Additional tests observation
Cover the search 401 sign-in flow end to end
[RULE] missing-test-coverage
The new tests call on_backend_unauthorized directly and assert on backend_unauthorized_message, but nothing exercises the runner branch that detects BACKEND_UNAUTHORIZED, resolves api_key from config, and chooses sign-out versus key-rejection messaging. The is_signed_out() early-return in on_backend_unauthorized is also untested. A unit test driving the tool with a stubbed backend 401 (and one with a signed-out gate) would pin the documented recovery behaviour.

Cover the search 401 sign-in flow end to end
This is the user-visible fix of the change: when the managed backend rejects the session, search now publishes SessionExpired, which should clear the token and surface the sign-in prompt to the user — a recovery that previously never happened for users on their own inference key. The inline Rust tests only assert the event is published from on_backend_unauthorized directly; nothing drives the real flow. An end-to-end test would need the mock backend to return a 401 for the search call and assert that the running app clears the session and shows the sign-in prompt. None of the e2e specs (harness-search-tool-flow.spec.ts, auth suites) do this. Still unfixed since the prior revision.

Advertise limit in both active search schemas.
A normal limit call can pass through the OpenHuman controller schema only if crates/openhuman-core/src/tools/schemas/registry.rs declares limit. The registered TinySearch role also rejects undeclared properties because its schema sets additionalProperties to false. Therefore, changing only vendor/tinysearch/crates/tinysearch-bus/src/search/catalog/roles.rs does not fully resolve the issue.

From production Langfuse (Oct 4–9, 0.64.x), two classes of
web_search_toolfailure besides the module-loading one fixed in #7155:provider request failed: provider returned HTTP 401: 9 events across 3 users, plus 5 "every configured search provider … unavailable". tinysearch reported any 401 the same way, so the host couldn't tell a dead TinyHumans session from a bad BYO key. In those turns, inference went directly to the user's own DeepSeek key, so nothing else noticed the session had died. Search kept failing with "The saved sign-in details are missing or no longer valid." and the app never prompted the user to sign in. The backend sees the same state at scale (401 NotAuthorizedError … Invalid token / Token expiredacross routes).arguments.limit is not allowed: 5 users. Models carrylimitover from neighboring tools, and a strict schema refused the call.Solution
search/tools.rs:backend_unauthorizedit callson_backend_unauthorized, which publishesDomainEvent::SessionExpired { source: "search.<tool>" }. That matches what a backend 401 does on inference and integrations; it's skipped when already signed out or when the runtime authenticates with an API key.backend_unauthorized_messagetells the model which fix applies.provider_unauthorizednames the provider.
