fix: preserve unusual filenames in candidate snapshots and exports - #83
Candidate snapshots reject valid files such as target/中文.py because Git's default text output quotes or escapes their names. dirty_paths() also treats a literal -> in a filename as a rename separator. Python text mode additionally converts carriage returns in filenames to newlines and rejects undecodable filename bytes. Candidate export separately decodes Git tree names strictly as UTF-8, preventing delivery of non-UTF-8 filenames.
Use Git's NUL-delimited output for status and both diff path helpers. Capture these three queries as bytes and decode with os.fsdecode, preserving filesystem names through surrogateescape without newline translation. Normal Git commands retain their existing text handling. Consume the separate source record for renames/copies while continuing to return the destination path.
Decode exported Git tree names with the same filesystem convention. The existing ASCII-escaped JSON manifest preserves these names, and materialization already reads and writes them through filesystem APIs without re-encoding them as strict UTF-8. No manifest format change or new dependency is needed. Update both architecture rows within their existing budgets.
Validation:
Added 16 snapshot cases covering tracked/untracked Unicode, literal arrows, quotes, tabs, line feeds, carriage returns, surrounding spaces, and non-UTF-8 names. Each checks discovery, snapshot materialization, commit verification, and committed path reporting. The two non-UTF-8 filesystem cases run on Linux.
Added six real-subprocess regression cases for carriage returns and non-UTF-8 bytes across all three path helpers, including on platforms whose filesystem rejects non-UTF-8 names.
Added a regression case for a staged rename followed by an untracked file.
Added a portable export regression using a real Git tree with a byte-0xff filename, verifying lossless manifest encoding and target content. It reproduces the strict UTF-8 failure on macOS without creating an unsupported filename on disk.
Added a Linux-only snapshot → export → materialization regression for the same filename class.
Focused candidate package, snapshot, isolation, smoke, and coherence checks: 70 passed, 3 skipped on macOS.
uv lock --check and uv sync --dev --locked passed.
uv run --frozen pytest -q: 1596 passed, 21 skipped on macOS.
uv run --frozen ruff check ., uv run --frozen ruff format --check ., and uv run --frozen ty check passed.
Validated with Python 3.12.6. Slow tests and live Docker/model integrations were not run. Three Linux-only filesystem cases await Linux CI; raw-byte subprocess and Git-tree export regressions passed locally.

Bug Fixes
Candidate snapshots and exports now preserve filenames containing newlines, carriage returns, or non-UTF-8 bytes.
Git path discovery handles unusual filenames consistently across committed changes, working-tree changes, and file renames.
Exported snapshots retain the committed target file contents and their filesystem names.

Walkthrough
Git path helpers now capture and decode path output without text translation and parse NUL-delimited output. Candidate exports decode Git tree filenames with filesystem encoding. Tests cover unusual filenames, rename destinations, and paths through snapshot and export flows.
git adds an option to capture output as bytes and decode it with filesystem encoding. changed_paths, working_tree_changed_paths, and dirty_paths parse NUL-delimited output. For rename and copy statuses, dirty_paths skips the following source-path record. The architecture description includes this parsing behavior.
Snapshot path discovery and validation tests/test_candidate_snapshot.py
Tests cover unusual filenames through dirty-path discovery, snapshot creation, materialization, and commit. Other tests verify rename destinations and filesystem-decoded carriage-return and non-UTF-8 paths.
export_candidate decodes Git tree filenames with filesystem encoding. Tests check non-UTF-8 filenames in export receipts, manifests, published files, and a snapshot-to-export round trip.
The change preserves unusual Git filenames without an established regression. Non-UTF-8 filenames remain unsupported on macOS APFS, as before. Mergeable subject to normal checks.

Preserve filesystem bytes in candidate exports.
build_candidate_snapshot now passes the filesystem-decoded path to git add and can commit a filename containing byte 0xff. export_candidate then reads the tree with git ls-tree -r -z and strictly evaluates raw_name.decode("utf-8"), so export can raise UnicodeDecodeError.
Update export_candidate and materialize_candidate to use a lossless filename representation in the manifest and reader. The unchanged return None in src/evolve/git.py is not the correction site.
Before this PR, the same filename was not supported end to end. The old text-mode, newline-delimited path discovery either failed to decode raw bytes or passed Git’s quoted filename instead of the filesystem name. This PR moves the failure from snapshot creation to candidate export.
src/evolve/patching.py is also unchanged and its diff calls use text decoding without path_output=True. They may fail if Git emits raw non-UTF-8 diff output; the repository does not establish that this occurs under its configured Git settings.

fix: preserve unusual filenames in Git path discovery
fix: preserve unusual filenames in candidate snapshots and exports

export_candidate() now decodes Git tree names with os.fsdecode, matching path discovery. The existing ensure_ascii=True manifest encoding preserves filesystem-surrogate names, and materialize_candidate() already passes those names to filesystem APIs unchanged, so no manifest schema change was necessary.
Added a portable regression built from a real Git tree containing a byte-0xff name; it fails with UnicodeDecodeError before the fix and verifies lossless JSON name/content handling after it. A Linux-only regression covers snapshot creation, export, and materialization together.
Validation on macOS / Python 3.12.6: 1596 passed, 21 skipped; lock/sync, Ruff lint/format, and ty passed. The three Linux filesystem cases await CI approval; byte-output and Git-tree export regressions passed locally. The speculative diff-output concern was not changed without a reproducer under the repository's Git settings.
