fix: prevent inline label duplication on software keyboard Enter - #748
The Vastmind owner reports that Enter beside a created-page label on Android can repeat its title and disrupt caret placement. This patch targets cancelable beforeinput(insertParagraph) delivered without an observed keydown, routing it through the existing Enter handlers. No on-device event trace or video has been captured, so the connection to that report still needs device confirmation.
An observed Enter keydown stays on ProseMirror's existing path, including its 200 ms iOS fallback. Composition and uncancelable input also remain native. The guard prevents a handled beforeinput from adding a second split beside an already observed Enter.
Validation: the two missing-keydown link-edge cases fail before the patch. All 49 focused caret tests pass in Chromium and WebKit after the change, including an observed-keydown regression checked after the fallback interval. TypeScript and focused ESLint pass. Actual Android/iOS keyboard acceptance remains pending.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved paragraph insertion with software keyboards at either edge of a link. In supported cases, inserting a paragraph now splits the text correctly without duplicating the link label, and users can continue typing in the new paragraph. Recent Enter key presses are also handled to support paragraph insertion.
Paragraph insertion during text composition and uncancelable native input remain unchanged.

Walkthrough
The beforeinput handler now tracks eligible Enter keydowns and checks composition state on both the view and event. It routes cancelable paragraph input through a synthetic Enter, except within 225 ms of an eligible keydown, and prevents the native event only when a key handler handles it. Tests cover hidden-mode paragraph input cases.
The handler routes cancelable paragraph input through a synthetic Enter unless an eligible Enter keydown occurred within the previous 225 ms. It prevents the event only when a key handler handles the synthetic key. Tests cover link-edge paragraph splitting, subsequent text insertion, and unchanged documents for uncancelable or composing input.
The change routes software-keyboard Enter presses through the existing Enter handlers so inline link labels are no longer duplicated. No concrete merge-blocking defect was found. Real-device checks on iOS and Android remain advisable but are not a blocker.

This is a core module of ProseMirror. ProseMirror is a well-behaved rich semantic content editor based on contentEditable, with support for collaborative editing and custom document schemas.
This module exports the editor view, which renders the current document in the browser, and handles user events.
The project page has more information, a number of examples and the documentation.
This code is released under an MIT license. There's a forum for general discussion and support requests, and the bug tracker is the place to report issues.
We aim to be an inclusive, welcoming community. To make that explicit, we have a code of conduct that applies to communication around the project.

Cancel the pending iOS Enter fallback before handling insertParagraph.
When iOS sends an Enter keydown before a cancelable insertParagraph, prosemirror-view 1.42.8 schedules a 200 ms fallback that calls the Enter handlers again. This handler dispatches Enter immediately but does not cancel that fallback, so the fallback can create a second split.
Coordinate this path with the fallback. Add an iOS regression test that asserts one split after the 200 ms fallback delay.

125 - 127:
Update the iOS Enter handling around the `handleKeyDown` dispatch to cancel or
coordinate with the pending `insertParagraph` fallback before invoking Enter
handlers, preventing the fallback from dispatching Enter a second time. Add an
iOS regression test that verifies only one split occurs after the 200 ms
fallback delay.

Software keyboards can send beforeinput(insertParagraph) without a keydown.
@Emerald-Realm Could you give me some more details about this? In which case will the software keyboard send event like this? Some video recording would be helpful, for example.

The Vastmind owner reports that Enter beside a created-page label on Android can repeat its title and disrupt caret placement. This patch targets cancelable
beforeinput(insertParagraph)delivered without an observed keydown, routing it through the existing Enter handlers.
