Summary

get-pnpm can now authenticate to a private npm registry using the same registry-scoped _authToken configuration users already give npm.

The CLI reads credentials from:

  • npm_config_...:_authToken environment entries;
  • the project, user, and global .npmrc files, in npm precedence order;
  • credentials embedded in npm_config_registry, converted to HTTP Basic authentication after stripping them from the URL.

Registry-scoped tokens support npmrc ${ENV_VAR} expansion and path-specific scopes. Token selection prefers the most specific matching path across environment, project, user, and global config sources.

Security

The existing download layer already accepts request headers and restricts them to the configured registry origin. This PR threads the CLI-derived authorization header through that path, so credentials are sent to the registry metadata and registry-hosted tarball requests but are not forwarded to a different download origin.

Validation

Windows 11 x64:

  • TypeScript compile: passed.
  • Focused registry/config suite: 28 tests, 22 passed, 6 platform skips, 0 failures.
  • New npm-config tests: 7/7 passed.

macOS:

  • Full get-pnpm package suite: 82/82 passed.
  • The POSIX-only authenticated install flow ran and confirmed the header reaches all five registry requests.

Fixes #60.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Summary

  • New Features
    • Registry authentication supports tokens from environment variables and npm configuration files, plus Basic authentication from credentials in registry URLs.
    • Optional authentication headers can be supplied when installing or downloading pnpm.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Credentials are sent only to the configured registry origin and matching path scope, including across redirects.
    • Downloads stay on the configured registry even when package metadata lists a tarball on another origin.
  • Documentation
    • The README and CLI help describe authentication options and warn that credentials sent over HTTP are unencrypted.

The change adds registry authentication from environment variables and npm config files. The CLI passes optional request headers through metadata and tarball requests. Requests restrict credentials by registry origin and optional path scope, including after redirects.

The documented HTTP registry behavior remains available, and credentials are scoped across redirects. No actionable issue remains that should delay merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 14268

Private-registry authentication is useful, but credentials can be sent over a configured HTTP connection or to a tarball path outside the token's configured path scope. Exposure is limited to affected installations and registry connections; credentials are withheld from different download origins.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: CLI-resolved path-scoped tokens can be forwarded to metadata-selected tarball URLs elsewhere on the same origin.
  • Medium · security · observed: The new CLI authentication path sends Basic or Bearer credentials to a configured HTTP registry without a transport-security check.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The exposed asset is the credential selected for an individual configured registry during an installation. The origin check bounds direct forwarding to that origin; it does not isolate paths or tenants sharing it.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A metadata-specified tarball URL on the registry origin can receive a path-scoped token even when its path falls outside the token's scope. Whether another party can exploit the destination depends on control of the metadata or off-path endpoint.
  • observed — When a user configures an HTTP registry with credentials, the resolver supplies an authorization header to HTTP requests. HTTP registry traffic was possible before the PR, but CLI transmission of these resolved credentials is new.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The pre-existing origin check withholds headers from different-origin tarballs. It does not enforce npmrc token path scope, and neither credential construction nor request dispatch requires HTTPS.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply the selected credential's path scope when deciding whether to attach it to a tarball request, including metadata-selected same-origin URLs.
  • proposed — Require an explicit decision before sending credentials over HTTP, while accounting for intentional local or private HTTP registries.

Review fixes are complete on head bb447e5.

Validated on Windows 11 x64:

  • TypeScript compile: passed.
  • Focused npm-config + registry credential-scope regressions: 15/15 passed.
  • Credentials are now constrained by both registry origin and npmrc path scope.
  • HTTP default-port token matching is covered.
  • Token specificity is compared across config layers.
  • Both cwd and discovered package-root npmrc files are considered when no local prefix is supplied.
  • Explicitly configured unreadable npmrc files surface their read error; default candidates remain best-effort.

The full Windows package suite also compiles and reaches 70 passed / 6 platform skips; its only two failures are pre-existing path-casing assertions in untouched shadowingPnpm tests (pnpm.CMD vs pnpm.cmd).

Greptile's latest review of bb447e5 is 5/5 and reports no actionable finding. All review threads raised so far have been addressed and resolved.

The remaining Vercel status requires pnpm-team authorization for an external-contributor deployment; the Netlify preview is green.

Redirect credential-scope hardening is now complete on head aedc3b4.

Validation on Windows 11 x64:

  • TypeScript build: passed.
  • Focused registry-auth redirect regressions: 5/5 passed.
  • Auth/config/download integration set: 33 passed, 0 failed, 6 platform skips.
  • Full package suite: 75 passed, 6 skipped; the only 2 failures are the pre-existing Windows path-casing assertions in untouched shadowingPnpm tests (pnpm.CMD vs pnpm.cmd).

The shared request path now follows redirects manually and recalculates credentials for every destination:

  • in-scope redirects retain Authorization;
  • same-origin redirects leaving the npmrc path scope drop Authorization;
  • the same rule applies to metadata and tarball requests;
  • the original request timeout remains a single budget across the redirect chain.

The CodeRabbit redirect-scope thread is marked addressed/resolved on this commit. Netlify and repository checks are green; the remaining Vercel failure is the existing external-contributor deployment authorization requirement for the pnpm team.

npm reads `${NAME?}` as empty when NAME is unset. It was taken as a
variable named `NAME?`, which is never set, so the token was dropped
even when NAME was.
