fix(hygiene): require audit identity and content columns - #1344
Follow-up to #1342 and dplush's review finding. Stops defaulting required id/content fields when scanning schema-varying tables, and adds regression coverage for missing id, content, or both under small batch scans. Optional metadata defaults and the scratchpad compatibility regression remain.\n\nVerification: 183 hygiene tests passed; Ruff required checks and git diff --check passed.\n\nThis follow-up branch is based on the PR's current head. No live MCP/Gateway deployment.
Summary
The hygiene audit now checks each table’s schema before scanning. It skips tables that lack id or content, and uses defaults for missing optional columns: source, timestamp, and session_id default to empty strings, while importance defaults to 0.5. Present columns keep their stored values. Metadata remains excluded from the query.
Regression tests cover missing required columns with small batch sizes and scanning a scratchpad table without a source column.
Architecture impact
This change is limited to hygiene auditing. It does not change tiered memory, retrieval, consolidation, the veracity system, sync, benchmarks, or the Hermes, MCP, and CLI integration surfaces. It does not add remote services or weaken local-first behavior.
Requiring authentic identity and content before scoring is the right call: the audit avoids treating fabricated defaults as real memory data. Optional metadata defaults preserve compatibility with simpler schemas. The change does not alter how memories are stored or retrieved.
Verification: The PR description reports that 183 hygiene tests, required Ruff checks, and git diff --check passed. These results are not independently verified here. Live MCP/Gateway deployment was not performed.

The hygiene table scan now checks table columns before querying. It skips tables without id or content and uses defaults for missing optional columns. Tests cover missing required columns and a scratchpad table without source.
The scan skips tables without id or content. For missing optional columns, it supplies defaults. Tests cover both cases and verify that a scratchpad row without source can be returned as a candidate.

Hygiene audits skip any table whose id or content column is generated. This is a narrow edge case with a one-line fix, so the change is mergeable with that awareness.

This narrowly scoped follow-up addresses dplush’s required-column boundary finding from #1342. _scan_table now requires real id and content columns and skips incompatible tables instead of synthesizing empty values; optional metadata defaults remain. Tests cover missing id, missing content, both absent, and small scan batches while retaining the scratchpad-without-source regression. Locally verified: 183 hygiene tests pass; Ruff required checks and git diff --check pass. No live Mnemosyne/Gateway deployment was made. This is a separate PR because #1342 is still based on its author-owned fork branch; I did not replace or force-push that branch.

Reviewed 7f04c3d locally. The supported-schema behavior looks good: the actual Beam scratchpad now scans without the missing-source error, while working_memory, episodic_memory and the legacy memories schema retain their results. Five-row probes with scan_all, batch sizes 1/2/10 and offsets 0/1 returned complete counts and authentic ids. Tables missing id/content now skip with a warning and no fabricated candidates. The hygiene, deletion and sleep-lock suites passed: 261 tests.
One bounded robustness observation: PRAGMA table_info omits SQLite generated columns. On a custom schema with generated id/content this guard skips otherwise selectable rows; generated optional timestamp can also cause small-batch scan_all to stop after its first batch. I reproduced this, but found no generated columns in the shipped schemas, so I would not call it a demonstrated supported-store blocker. If custom generated-column tables are intended to be supported, table_xinfo plus a regression test would cover it.
Optional test improvements: assert the skip warning and use multiple scratchpad rows so the regression test itself exercises pagination. The independent probes cover both behaviors at this head.
Please make the supersession of #1342 explicit so the alternatives are not integrated twice. This is a technical review of the stated head, not a merge instruction.
