Description

BeamMemory.get() omits channel_id and trust_tier even when the row stores them. This also leaves the fields out of Mnemosyne.get() and MCP mnemosyne_get responses.

Select and return both stored fields for working and episodic memories, including SQL NULL values. Add real SQLite regressions for non-default and null provenance, legacy-schema migration defaults, read-only behavior, session/global visibility, and the serialized MCP handler response. Update the README, changelog, Core version, bundled Core plugin manifest and generated documentation. Preserve the catalog's existing >=4.0.0 compatibility floor and correct the release-contract test to check that independent floor rather than the latest Core version.

The column additions follow the patch proposed by @aguanitallc in #1338. Developed with Codex assistance.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix
  • Documentation update
  • Test improvement

How Has This Been Tested?

  • Windows / Python 3.11: focused regressions give 10 failed / 2 passed before the fix, then 12 passed with the fix.
  • Ubuntu / Python 3.12, TZ=UTC: 349 passed, 1 skipped in the related regression suite.
  • Follow-up after hosted checks exposed two version-contract failures: 124 passed in the provenance, MCP, release-contract, plugin-manifest, catalog and CLI version suites; this includes two new legacy migration cases. Both memory tables start without provenance columns, and migrated rows return the existing STATED default separately from explicitly stored SQL NULL.
  • Ruff: changed-file F,RUF022 and repository fatal-error checks.
  • Generated docs: generate-docs.py --check and verify-docs.py, run on Linux.
  • Wheel and sdist built successfully; both pass twine check.
  • Full Core and Hermes test suites across Python 3.10–3.13: left to GitHub Actions.

The related Linux suite covers test_get_provenance.py, test_mcp_server.py, test_beam.py, test_issue_421_scope.py, test_recall_provenance.py, test_hermes_catalog_plugin.py and test_beam_event_timestamps.py, with MNEMOSYNE_NO_EMBEDDINGS=1 and TZ=UTC.

Checklist

  • Version bumped in mnemosyne/__init__.py
  • CHANGELOG.md updated
  • README and generated documentation updated
  • No new runtime dependencies, cloud services or API keys

Summary

BeamMemory.get() now returns stored channel_id and trust_tier values for working and episodic memories. SQL NULL values return as None. This makes provenance available through Mnemosyne.get() and MCP mnemosyne_get.

The change preserves the existing tier lookup order, visibility filters, and missing-memory behavior. It changes no storage schema, retrieval strategy, consolidation pipeline, veracity system, sync layer, or benchmark methodology.

Architecture and impact

  • Memory architecture: The change exposes provenance already stored in the working and episodic tiers. It does not change BEAM storage or tier behavior.
  • Privacy and local-first design: Reads use existing local database fields. The change adds no data collection, external service, or network dependency. It does not erode local-first guarantees.
  • Agent integration: MCP mnemosyne_get now returns the provenance fields. The README documents the fields for beam.get(), Mnemosyne.get(), and MCP. Hermes receives a version update and a release-contract test keeps the catalog Core compatibility floor at 4.0.0. No CLI behavior changes are included.
  • Maintainability: Tests cover both memory tiers, populated and nullable provenance, migrated legacy defaults, read-only retrieval, session and global visibility, and missing memories. MCP tests check serialized responses. Keeping the catalog compatibility floor independent of the Core source version is the right call; it avoids raising that floor for a compatible Core release.
  • Release documentation: The package and Hermes plugin versions change to 4.1.0. Generated API documentation and the changelog are updated.

Returning provenance through the existing read path is the right call. It makes stored provenance available without changing storage or retrieval behavior.

Validation

The PR objectives report 12 focused regression tests passed after the fix and 349 passed with 1 skipped in a related suite on Ubuntu/Python 3.12 with TZ=UTC. They also report successful Ruff checks, generated-documentation checks, and wheel and sdist builds that passed twine check. These results are author-reported; completed checks on the current head are not available here. Full Core and Hermes suites across Python 3.10–3.13 were left to GitHub Actions. CI results are not available.

Walkthrough

BeamMemory.get() now returns channel_id and trust_tier for working and episodic memories. Regression tests cover direct reads and MCP retrieval. The README, changelog, package version, and API documentation are updated for version 4.1.0.

Changes: Memory Read Provenance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Return provenance from memory reads
mnemosyne/core/beam.py, tests/test_get_provenance.py, tests/test_mcp_server.py
Both memory queries and result mappings include channel_id and trust_tier. Tests cover stored and null values, legacy rows, global and session-scoped visibility, missing memories, and MCP retrieval.

Reviewed a20791c. The stored channel and trust values flow correctly through both direct-read tiers, Mnemosyne.get() and MCP serialization, including explicit NULL values and migrated legacy defaults. I found no correctness blocker.

The focused SDK/provenance/release-contract suite passed 94 tests (the packaged lifecycle case was excluded locally). Four additional real MCP client/server calls verified stored and NULL provenance for both tiers, and query-only probes confirmed unchanged recall bookkeeping. The reader's channel does not replace the stored writer provenance.

The remaining integration conflict against current Main is in CHANGELOG.md. Please preserve its graph and embedding entries when refreshing the branch. The added public response fields also need the documented API decision disposition under MAINTAINERS.md; this is an additive change, not a finding of a breaking change. The catalog compatibility floor can remain independent of the new Core version.
