Description

Graph traversal selects the strongest path from scope-eligible entity seeds.
Regression coverage checks final recall metadata, seed orders, both memory tiers and shortcut eligibility.
Enhanced recall cache generation 16 rejects entries from generations 14 and 15.
Cache generation 16 follows generation 15 in #1275.
Graph node ID normalization is outside this PR.

    • SQLite is the only database dependency

Summary

Graph recall now retains the highest-scoring traversal for each memory reached from multiple entity seeds. A later, shorter path can replace an earlier, weaker path, regardless of seed order. The graph voice emits each traversed memory once and excludes all original seed IDs.

When recall has a scope, gist and fact seeds must match a visible, unsuperseded, unexpired backing row in working or episodic memory before they can affect traversal or fusion. Visibility and validity must hold on the same row. Caller date, source, and topic filters also constrain seed eligibility. Unscoped callers retain their prior behavior.

The enhanced-recall cache version changes from 16 to 17 to prevent reuse of results cached under the prior graph-recall behavior.

Architecture and impact

This change improves episodic graph retrieval and its interaction with BEAM recall. It does not change memory storage, consolidation, the veracity system, or sync behavior. It adds no Hermes, MCP, or CLI integration surface.

The implementation uses the existing database-backed recall path. It adds no remote dependency and does not erode local-first guarantees.

Checking scoped seed eligibility before traversal is the right call. It prevents ineligible seeds from displacing a stronger eligible path. Retaining the best traversal per memory fixes first-hit suppression and avoids duplicate memory IDs.

Topic is currently stored in the source field. The scoped graph predicate applies both source and topic filters as exact matches against that field, consistent with the existing row filter. A dedicated topic column remains outside this change.

Regression tests cover competing paths and seed order, gist and fact seeds, both memory tiers, row-level scope and validity, caller filters, seed exclusion, final recall metadata, and cache invalidation. The tests use explicit graph IDs and do not establish behavior for the separate ingested-node ID mismatch noted in review comments. No broader retrieval benchmark result is established.

The supplied review summary reports 240 passing selected tests, Ruff, and generated documentation checks. These results are not independently verified as completed checks on the current head. Full test and CI status: not available.

Walkthrough

Scoped graph recall checks that seeds have eligible backing rows, applies caller filters to seed eligibility, and retains the strongest traversal path for each non-seed memory. The enhanced-recall cache version increases to 17.

Changes: Graph recall ranking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filter seeds and aggregate strongest paths
mnemosyne/core/polyphonic_recall.py, tests/test_polyphonic_graph_strongest_path.py, tests/test_polyphonic_session_scope.py
When a scope is supplied, recall passes its filters to _graph_voice. The traversal checks seed visibility and activity, excludes seed IDs, and keeps the highest score for each memory across seeds. Tests cover scoped and unscoped paths, seed order, backing-row eligibility, missing tiers, and SQL error propagation.
Apply caller filters to graph seeds
mnemosyne/core/beam.py, tests/test_polyphonic_graph_caller_filters.py
The polyphonic scope predicate applies date, source, and topic filters before voice limits and graph-seed eligibility checks. Tests cover filter boundaries, missing timestamps, combined filters, and matching filters and scope on the same backing row.
Update enhanced-recall cache generation
mnemosyne/core/beam.py, tests/test_enhanced_recall_cache.py, CHANGELOG.md
The enhanced-recall cache version changes to 17. Tests verify that generation 16 entries miss after restart and that refreshed entries are reused. The changelog records the recall changes.

Traverse using the stored graph node IDs.

find_related_memories compares its input directly with stored edge endpoints. _ingest_graph_and_veracity stores gist_<memory_id> to fact_<memory_id>_<index> ctx edges, but _graph_voice traverses from <memory_id> and <index>. Traversal can therefore miss paths attached to these nodes.

This is pre-existing code, not a regression introduced by this PR. If this PR must make graph traversal effective, keep graph node IDs for traversal and map related nodes back to memory IDs for aggregation.

Reviewed cc525bf against main d34b5df. The bounded strongest-path fix works on the reported graph shape: both seed orders retain the one-hop Bob route at score 0.4, and low-weight ctx/non-ctx shortcuts are ignored. The five selected graph/order/scope/hydration/cache suites pass 177 tests. These passes do not establish the missing seed-eligibility boundary below.

I independently confirmed CodeRabbit's seed-scope concern through the actual engine recall path with real temporary SQLite memory rows, gists and edges. Alice, the intermediate row and target belong to session a; Bob belongs to b. For query 'Alice then Bob' under session-a scope, main retains target metadata seed=Alice/depth=2, whereas this head returns the same visible target with seed=Bob/depth=1. Bob's memory row is correctly removed from final results. The graph has always traversed unscoped seeds; this patch makes the stronger foreign route replace an earlier visible route. I would hold this boundary until seed eligibility is applied before choosing the winning path, with an integrated regression covering the final result and metadata. This probe demonstrates foreign path influence and metadata propagation, not return of Bob's memory content; its final RRF score happened to stay unchanged.

The graph-node-ID issue is separately inherited: real _ingest_graph_and_veracity('Alice', 'Alice uses Python.', ...) writes gist_Alice -> fact_Alice_0 ctx endpoints, while _graph_voice traverses from Alice and 0. That mismatch reproduces on both main and this head. Please track or explicitly scope that follow-up rather than presenting this PR's raw-memory-ID fixture as proof of the ordinary ingested-node path. The requested integrated tests are useful, especially eligible versus foreign seeds and low-weight/non-ctx shortcuts.

Cache integration also needs attention: this and #1275 both use generation 15. The second semantic merge needs a distinct generation and a regression rejecting entries from the immediately preceding generation. This PR currently also lacks a new explicit generation-14 stale-entry case. The heads combine without a textual merge conflict while retaining 15, so this needs deliberate coordination.

Rechecked f236f4e against main d34b5df. The earlier foreign/orphan-seed boundary is fixed for scoped recall, and the tests now exercise the real engine's final metadata as well as both seed orders and backing tiers. My independent Alice/Bob control now retains Alice's two-hop path when Bob is foreign. The five selected graph/order/scope/hydration/cache suites pass 192 tests. Cache generation 16 and explicit prior-14/prior-15 invalidation cases address the earlier collision with #1275, assuming #1275 lands first and no intervening semantic cache change consumes that generation.

I independently reproduced CodeRabbit's remaining active-seed finding. On real temporary Beam/SQLite tables, keep both seeds in session a, give Alice an active two-hop path and Bob a one-hop path, and set Bob.valid_until to an expired timestamp. The target still gets score 0.4 and metadata seed=Bob/depth=1; marking Bob superseded has the same result. These metadata reach the final engine result. A foreign Bob correctly gives Alice/0.2/depth=2, while active Bob remains the positive one-hop control.

The new pre-traversal _drop_out_of_scope call establishes visibility, not active-row validity. Please require scope and active validity together on the same backing row, preserving the intended any-tier rule. Add expired/superseded competing-path cases for both tiers, plus a visible-invalid/foreign-active twin control so evidence from two different rows is not accidentally combined into eligibility. I would continue to hold this boundary pending that correction. All hosted CI/CLA/CodeRabbit checks are successful, but the bot's green check includes this actionable finding.

The gist_/fact_ graph-node-ID mismatch remains inherited and explicitly outside these raw-memory-edge tests; the clarified test comment is accurate. It should remain separately tracked rather than being reported as fixed by scoped strongest-path selection. Unscoped standalone calls retain their documented prior behavior.

LostInInaka added a commit to LostInInaka/mnemosyne that referenced this pull request Nov 5, 2026
dplush and CodeRabbit both caught that the restart regression could pass
without invalidation ever happening: forcing get_opaque to return None left it
green, because a recompute that produces the same value looks identical to a
cache that was correctly bypassed.

The test now asserts the cache path rather than the outcome. The generation-15
request is checked to miss, the generation-15 entry is checked to be on disk and
retrievable under its own key from a freshly opened QueryCache, the
generation-16 key is checked to differ from it, the generation-16 lookup is
checked to miss, and a second identical request is checked to be a hit with no
additional recall.

Measured mutations, all three red as intended:

  current code passes
generation left at 15 fails: cache key did not change
get_opaque forced to None fails: stale entry not retrievable
present/past capped at 0.5 7 new assertions fail, original 10 pass

Also narrows the offset claim in the changelog: the bonus appears on a host with
a POSITIVE UTC offset, where the row lands in the future. A negative offset
makes the row read older, so it is penalised twice rather than rewarded.

The generation comment no longer reserves a number. mnemosyne-oss#1275 (15->16), mnemosyne-oss#1308
(14->16) and mnemosyne-oss#1315 (15->16) all claim 16; whichever lands first takes it, and
each later semantic change takes whichever generation is actually free in the
integration history at that point.

I reproduced the remaining scoped active-seed issue on f236f4e. The new real-Beam matrix has 48 cases; 24 fail before the correction. An expired or superseded one-hop Bob seed overrides Alice's valid two-hop path. A visible-invalid Bob row plus a foreign-active Bob row also incorrectly passes when visibility and validity are considered separately.

Pushed 122c659, which requires scope, supersession and expiry eligibility on the same backing row before graph traversal. An eligible row in either backing tier remains sufficient. An invalid foreign twin cannot veto a valid visible row. The check is limited to scoped seed admission; unscoped standalone behavior and default final scope pruning retain their existing behavior. SQL errors continue to propagate, and minimal standalone schemas without validity columns retain their prior visibility-only checks.

The regressions cover both tiers, gist/fact seeds, both entity orders, active/future/expired/superseded/foreign rows and the split-evidence twin. They assert raw graph score/path and final engine metadata, with positive and unscoped controls. The selected graph/order/scope/hydration/cache suites pass 240 tests; Ruff and generated documentation also pass. Independent review found no additional actionable issue and repeated graph/session-scope tests successfully.

The new hosted checks are pending. The inherited gist_/fact_ graph-node-ID mismatch remains separate. This PR's generation 16 is relative to Main's 15; the final generation must be assigned against the actual integration history with #1275/#1315/#1329, rather than treated as reserved.

Deduplicate direct graph seeds by memory ID before fusion.

get_opaque forced to None fails: stale entry not retrievable
present/past capped at 0.5 7 new assertions fail, original 10 pass

Also narrows the offset claim in the changelog: the bonus appears on a host with
a POSITIVE UTC offset, where the row lands in the future. A negative offset
makes the row read older, so it is penalised twice rather than rewarded.

The generation comment no longer reserves a number. mnemosyne-oss#1275 (15->16), mnemosyne-oss#1308
(14->16) and mnemosyne-oss#1315 (15->16) all claim 16; whichever lands first takes it, and
each later semantic change takes whichever generation is actually free in the
integration history at that point.
