Project Information

  1. Project Name: BESSER

  2. Project URL: https://github.com/BESSER-PEARL/BESSER

  3. Description:

Open-source (MIT) low-code platform written in Python. You define a domain model (UML classes, attributes, associations) in Python or in a browser editor (https://editor.besser-pearl.org), and its BackendGenerator produces a complete FastAPI application: SQLAlchemy models, Pydantic schemas, CRUD routers with nested relationships, and a database. The full-stack generator adds a React frontend on top of the same FastAPI backend.

Criteria

  1. Is the project new?

    • Yes
    • No
  2. How long has the project been maintained?

About 4 years (repository created September 2022), with continuous development since; the last commit is from this week.

  3. How many releases has it had if it's a library or package?

103 GitHub releases (https://github.com/BESSER-PEARL/BESSER/releases), published on PyPI as besser (https://pypi.org/project/besser/).

  4. Are you the author, or are you submitting the project on behalf of a company?

    • I am the author
    • I am submitting on behalf of a company
    • Other (please specify)

I'm one of the developers; BESSER is built by a research team at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST).

  5. What makes it awesome?

It goes from a domain model to a working FastAPI app without hand-writing the data layer. Five lines of model give a runnable API with SQLAlchemy models, Pydantic validation, CRUD endpoints and Swagger docs. Generation is deterministic (template-based), so the same model always gives the same code, and you regenerate when the model changes. It complements the schema-driven tools already in this section (FastAPI Code Generator starts from OpenAPI; BESSER starts from a UML domain model and can also generate the frontend and database).
