What changed

Assemble ChainSync's acquisition API and serialized update worker. ensure selects missing accounts; sync accepts exclusively leased targets, including resident accounts selected by lifecycle handling. Both use the same companion, normalization, ATA projection, and action-dependency flow.

Confirmed undelegation keeps eligible accounts resident while fetching and subscribing as readonly. Rediscovered delegations follow the normal companion wave; failed HTTP refreshes recheck eligibility before removing the mirror. Coverage, eviction, activation, and rescue remain owned by the service.

Keep the Engine-backed scenarios explicit while sharing transport cancellation, wire encoding, and request parsing.

Closes #1724
Closes #1725
Refs #1749

Impact

Validator consumers still use Chainlink; the two services never share a production Engine. Acquisition returns a u64 count of successful HTTP entries, including companions, nulls, and dependency waves.

Reviewer notes

Companion fetches retain target leases; action dependencies acquire leases only after the preceding wave releases them. Batches are not atomic, acquisition errors do not roll back prior materializations, and successful rescue scheduling is not confirmed on-chain completion.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a ChainSync API for acquiring account state, resolves account companions and dependencies, and normalizes program and delegated ATA data. It also adds delegation activation and rescue handling, tracks live WebSocket and gRPC coverage, and adds tests and setup for these paths.

Changes: ChainSync

Layer / File(s) Summary
Public API and provider setup
Cargo.toml, chainsync/Cargo.toml, chainsync/README.md, chainsync/src/account.rs, chainsync/src/lib.rs, chainsync/src/grpc/mod.rs, chainsync/src/http/mod.rs, chainsync/src/websocket/mod.rs
Adds public account roles and ChainSync configuration, construction, transaction-account classification, ensure, and sync APIs. Construction initializes configured providers and starts the worker. The README describes the acquisition and lifecycle contracts.
Snapshot acquisition and role resolution
chainsync/src/acquisition/*, chainsync/src/program/*, chainsync/tests/acquisition.rs
Plans subscription and fetch batches, resolves companions, preserves context-slot floors across refetches, and materializes account images. Program normalization handles supported loader formats. Tests cover batching, retries, freshness, and program normalization.
ATA and eATA projection
chainsync/src/ata/*, chainsync/tests/ata.rs, chainsync/tests/support/account.rs
Validates eATA and token-account identities, derives related addresses, and projects accepted delegated state onto canonical ATAs. Tests cover legacy Token and Token-2022 accounts, native accounts, and rejected identities.
Delegation activation and rescue
chainsync/src/aml.rs, chainsync/src/delegation/*, chainsync/tests/actions.rs
Prepares delegation actions and dependencies, assesses distinct signers through AML, and materializes actions or rescue intents. Tests cover AML errors, risky signers, dependency-first execution, and rescue state.

The ChainSync worker can stall permanently. This can happen when many WebSocket updates queue up while it waits for a subscription to complete. It can also happen when delegations reference each other in a cycle. Either case blocks live updates and lifecycle handling until restart. Resolve these issues before merging.

Explanation

The production changes, dependency updates, documentation, metrics, transport helpers, fixture relocation, and tests support the acquisition, lifecycle, delegation, coverage, normalization, or transport work in [#1724] and [#1725]. The summary shows no unrelated production feature or consumer-facing lifecycle API.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 96.13% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 155 functions across 32 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Explanation

The changes implement the main coding requirements in [#1724] and [#1725]. They add leased acquisition, classified roles, companion and dependency waves, normalization, delegation activation, undelegation handling, coverage checks, eviction safeguards, and replay tests. The reviewed public API still adds ChainSync::ensure_transaction_accounts, not the required sync_transaction_accounts in [#1724]. The supplied evidence does not establish an equivalent synchronization API for transaction accounts. This requirement remains unmet.

Resolution

Add ChainSync::sync_transaction_accounts with transaction-account classification and forwarding to the common acquisition flow, or provide code evidence that an equivalent existing API satisfies the exact [#1724] requirement.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude deferred delegations from later dependency waves. Cyclic action dependencies make acquisition loop forever.

A deferred delegation is not materialized until all waves finish. missing therefore still reports it as absent.

Consider delegation A, whose action references B, and delegation B, whose action references A:

  • Wave 1 defers A and requests B.
  • Wave 2 defers B and requests A. missing selects A again because A is not in Engine.
  • Wave 3 refetches A and defers it again. The cycle repeats with no limit.

Each wave issues more HTTP fetches and grows deferred. ensure/sync never returns.

Delegated accounts and their post-delegation actions come from on-chain data. Any delegator to this authority can create such a cycle.

ChainSync::delegated in chainsync/src/worker/lifecycle.rs calls self.ensure(dependencies) from the serialized worker. A cycle there blocks all subsequent live updates and lifecycle events.

A diamond-shaped dependency graph has a related problem. If an account is deferred at two depths, it is fetched and materialize_delegation runs twice.

Record each deferred pubkey. Filter those pubkeys from next before you call missing. The earlier wave still materializes each deferred delegation after its dependents' children.

🐛 Proposed fix

             let pending = self.wave(targets).await?;
             let mut next = BTreeMap::new();
             let mut ready = Vec::new();
             for PendingDelegation { delegation, unsubscribe } in pending {
+                deferred_keys.insert(delegation.pubkey);
                 let (prepared, dependencies) = self.sync.prepare_delegation(delegation)?;
@@
             let requests = next
                 .into_iter()
+                .filter(|(pubkey, _)| !deferred_keys.contains(pubkey))
                 .map(|(pubkey, property)| ChainSyncAccount { pubkey, property })
                 .collect();

💡 Result:

At commit `f5e377e83aa166c255b2b39bdf0af6e5e53fac6f`, I can confirm the commit is a ledger fix: it safely checks account-index key length during tail cleanup and reports malformed keys as corruption. The commit changes only `ledger/src/index.rs`; it does not establish anything about `AccountAccessor::materialize`. ([github.com](https://github.com/magicblock-labs/magicblock-engine/commit/f5e377e83aa166c255b2b39bdf0af6e5e53fac6f))

The repository’s current README shows an `engine.account(key).await?.materialize(account, actions).await?` example, but that is current documentation—not evidence for the requested commit. ([github.com](https://github.com/magicblock-labs/magicblock-engine?utm_source=openai)) I couldn’t verify the `AccountAccessor` implementation or `materialize` behavior at the specified revision, so those details remain unresolved.

Delete stale resident state when delegated materialization or rescue fails.

delegated removes coverage before materialize_delegation. If materialization and its rescue both fail, Engine rolls back the failed transaction, so the old ReadOnly image can remain without coverage. The worker logs the error and does not retry. Apply the same evict_cached fallback to this final error path.

Update the non-Magic path in `delegated` so a failure after coverage is removed
cannot leave stale cached account state. Preserve the original error while
applying the existing `evict_cached` fallback on the final materialization
failure; include preparation or dependency failures only if needed to cover the

Retry projection after acquiring candidate ATAs.

When an action-bearing raw eATA has no resident candidate ATA, project_delegation ensures the candidates as Readonly and returns None. ensure fetches and materializes those ATA accounts, but it does not retry projection. The original eATA record and actions are not part of that acquisition, so the worker drops the delegation event without scheduling its action.

Retry projection after ensure, while preventing a second acquisition attempt if no usable candidate was fetched.

Prevent WebSocket event backpressure from blocking subscription completion.

Pool uses a bounded event channel. Registry::acknowledge waits for Event::Acknowledged to enter that channel before it resolves the subscription waiter. If queued updates fill the channel while the worker is inside ensure or sync, the worker cannot consume events, the acknowledgement cannot be queued, and the subscription waiter cannot complete.

The provider RPC timeout does not cover this pool-to-worker send, and request has no deadline around its oneshot wait. Decouple subscription completion from bounded worker-event delivery, such as with a separate non-blocking control path. Do not use try_send for required events unless dropped events are safely recovered. Add an end-to-end timeout for the pool subscription wait as a fallback.

Use EATA_PROGRAM_ID instead of a hardcoded program address.

Ata::new parses the eATA program ID from a string literal. The production checks in chainsync/src/ata/mod.rs compare against mbv_core::token_programs::EATA_PROGRAM_ID. If the constant changes, the fixture keeps the old address. The derived eata then fails eata_data, and the tests fail for an unclear reason. Import the constant.
