LCORE-4803: Knowledge Capability - #2915
jrobertboos wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
Introduce `KnowledgeMatch`, `KnowledgeReadiness`, and `KnowledgeReadinessStatus` in `src/knowledge/types.py`, plus the abstract `KnowledgeSource` base class in `src/knowledge/sources/base.py` with `search`/`readiness` methods and configurable exposure modes (`tool`/`auto`).
Introduce `src/knowledge/reranker.py` with a `rerank` function that scores `KnowledgeMatch` results against a prompt using a `sentence-transformers` `CrossEncoder`. Final scores blend normalized cross-encoder scores with normalized original match scores (30/70), and matches are returned highest-score-first. Failures are logged and return matches unranked.
WalkthroughThis change adds knowledge result and readiness types, an abstract knowledge source contract, concurrent source search, and optional cross-encoder reranking. ChangesKnowledge search

Introduce `src/knowledge/capability.py` with the `Knowledge` capability and `search_sources` helper. The capability wraps one or more `KnowledgeSource` instances, respecting each source's configured exposure mode (`tool`/`auto`), and supports optional cross-encoder reranking via a configurable model id.

Preserve results when one knowledge source fails.
If one source.search(prompt) raises, asyncio.gather raises and discards matches from every healthy source. For a capability that combines independent sources, isolate and log source failures. Return the successful sources’ matches, with an explicit policy for the case in which every source fails.

Make the source/result pairing strict.
This pairing requires one result list per source. Add strict=True so a length mismatch cannot silently omit a source or result list. Based on learnings: Python 3.10+ code should pass an explicit strict= argument to zip().

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Connect Knowledge to the agent lifecycle.
Knowledge only stores sources and reranker. It does not contribute a tool or implement a model-request hook. In Pydantic AI 2.27.1, AbstractCapability collects behavior through methods such as get_toolset and before_model_request; fields alone do not expose search to the agent. As written, attaching Knowledge provides neither the documented "tool" nor "auto" mode. Implement both contributions and route their searches through search_sources. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Resolve the documented reranker model ID.
The field documentation tells callers to supply a model ID, but the field accepts a CrossEncoder instance and no code resolves a string. If a caller follows the documented form and passes that value to search_sources, rerank calls .predict on the string, logs the exception, and silently returns unranked matches. Either resolve model IDs before search or document and enforce an instance-only contract.

Run cross-encoder inference outside the event loop.
CrossEncoder.predict performs synchronous inference. Calling it directly from rerank blocks other async requests until scoring finishes, with work proportional to the returned matches. Offload the call to a bounded worker and retain the existing scoring-error fallback. (sbert.net)

Allow the documented backend-specific readiness statuses.
KnowledgeReadiness.status is restricted to three literals, but the type documentation permits additional backend status strings. A typed KnowledgeSource.readiness() implementation cannot return those documented values without a type error. Use str for this field, and retain KnowledgeReadinessStatus for the common codes.
