Problem

Closing a CLAUDISH_PROXY_KEY_PREVIOUS rotation window (unset + recreate) was a blind cut: nothing recorded which key authenticated a request, so every missed holder of the retiring key — a seat whose settings.json was not updated, a sidecar .env, an external consumer — learned it by 401 at the moment of the cut. You only found them by breaking them.

Change

New leaf module handlers/shared/proxy-key-rotation.ts (same layering rule as proxy-keys.ts: importable by both the fork middleware and the core handlers) counts, per bucket, the requests authenticated by the previous key during a rotation window:

  • Bucket = X-Claudish-Machine header when present, else the User-Agent product token (claude-cli/2.1.293 → claude-cli, AsyncOpenAI/Python 3.24.0 → AsyncOpenAI). Never an IP, never a key-derived value; buckets are sanitized to [A-Za-z0-9._-]{1,32} so a hostile UA cannot smuggle control characters into a JSON key or a log line. The bucket measures the MACHINE, not the holder: on a relay seat the relay injects its own x-proxy-key (its .env) while the client keeps its own (settings.json), so a counting bucket on that machine means both must be migrated before P4 — that is what the P3 operator reads off /health.
  • /health exposes proxyKeyPreviousHits: {bucket: count} + proxyKeyPreviousLastAt (ISO), counts and timestamps only. Omitted entirely when _PREVIOUS is unset — that absence is itself the readable signal "no window open". Appended last on /health, nothing renamed.
  • Marker [ProxyKey] previous key used by <bucket> (n=<count>) via logStderr (forceConsole → docker logs), rate-limited to 1/bucket/hour — the durable trace after a restart resets the in-memory counter.
  • Every site that accepts a proxy key calls noteProxyKeyAuthentication: the fork auth middleware on both branches — the enforce branch, and the native exemption branch, which authenticates just as much (its matchesProxyKey call decides the keyless mark) and is the ONLY site a bare claude-* remapped by modelMap onto a remote lane ever crosses (the dominant fleet shape, per the review of 9131124) — plus the two native proxyKey→Anthropic swaps (/v1/messages in NativeHandler, count_tokens). A request can cross several of those sites, so the middleware marks the raw request (WeakSet on c.req.raw, same identity through next()) and both swap sites skip a marked request: one authentication, one count.

initProxyKeyRotationTracking runs where resolveProxyKeys runs (proxy-server startup): an empty previous key leaves the tracker inert.

Verification

  • Pins proxy-key-rotation-route.test.ts (6 tests): U1 bucket derivation (machine header / UA token / hostile UA → unknown / empty → unknown); R1 previous-key hit on non-native ingress lands in the machine bucket on /health, primary key counts nowhere, no key material on the health surface; R2 no machine header → UA bucket; R3 _PREVIOUS unset → old key refused 401 and /health omits the fields; R4 native /v1/messages passthrough counted exactly once (the exemption branch and the NativeHandler swap both see the key — the mark is what keeps one request = one count); R5 native count_tokens swap, same exactly-once; R6 second hit inside the hour is counted but silent (marker fires once per bucket); R7 the review repro verbatim — bare claude-sonnet-5-5 + modelMap→budget + previous key ⇒ 200 served by the budget (ok-budget asserted) and counted once.
  • Mutations executed (each run against the real sources, restored after, green re-verified):
    • middleware exemption-branch call disabled ⇒ R7 red alone (R4 green through the swap site — the remapped class is pinned separately, review pin c);
    • WeakSet skip (countedRequests.has(raw)) removed ⇒ R4 red at 2 — the double-count pin: a passthrough crosses exemption branch AND swap, the mark is load-bearing;
    • middleware enforce-branch call neutralized ⇒ R1/R2 red (no bucket ever appears);
    • marker rate-limit check dropped ⇒ R6 red (two markers for one bucket).
  • First mutation attempt in the original iteration was a no-op (guard let provided through) and was caught precisely because the pin stayed green — re-applied properly before recording the red.
  • bun run test:strict: no regression — the 3 observed fails (openai-responses-sse instrumentation, nominalBucketOfModel applied to concrete delegation targets (the #348 bucketer class, owner-side sites) #367 B1 delegation, team-orchestrator TEST-15) all reproduce identically on clean main (measured via stash), so they pre-date this change; baseline learned and re-run: observed ⊆ baseline. The 6 tests pass after the review fix.
  • bun run build OK.

Operational use

The window closes when every fleet bucket stays at 0 for at least 12 h (issue criterion); any bucket still counting names the holder still to migrate — before the cut instead of after it. On a relay seat, remember the bucket names the machine: migrate the relay's .env key AND the client's settings.json before expecting that bucket to fall to 0.

Closes #439

#439)

Closing a CLAUDISH_PROXY_KEY_PREVIOUS window (unset + recreate) was a
blind cut: nothing recorded which key authenticated a request, so every
missed holder of the retiring key learned it by 401.

New leaf module handlers/shared/proxy-key-rotation.ts counts, per bucket
(X-Claudish-Machine header, else UA product token — never IP, never a
key-derived value), the requests authenticated by the retiring key:

- /health exposes proxyKeyPreviousHits + proxyKeyPreviousLastAt per
  bucket, omitted entirely when no window is open (that absence IS the
  signal); appended last, nothing renamed.
- [ProxyKey] previous key used by <bucket> (n=<count>) forceConsole
  marker, rate-limited to 1/bucket/hour, survives restarts in docker logs.
- Covered at every site that ACCEPTS a proxy key: the fork auth
  middleware (non-native ingress), the NativeHandler swap (/v1/messages)
  and the count_tokens native swap — each request crosses exactly one.

Pins U1/R1-R6 (proxy-key-rotation-route.test.ts, 5 tests, real
createProxyServer in-process). Mutations executed and recorded:
middleware site neutralized => R1/R2 red; native swap neutralized => R4
red alone; marker rate-limit dropped => R6 red. Strict run: no
regression (observed 3 systematic fails subset of baseline, all three
reproducing on clean main).

ouverte (_PREVIOUS posé) 200, servi par le budget, proxyKeyPreviousHits = {}
fermée (P4) 401 [ProxyAuth] keyless request for claude-sonnet-5-5 resolves to a server-held credential…

Pourquoi.

  2. Pins :
    • (a) claude-* remappé vers un lane distant + clé précédente → compté 1 fois ;
    • (b) claude-* servi en passthrough natif + clé précédente → compté exactement 1 fois, pas 2 ;
    • (c) mutation : retirer le comptage de la branche d'exemption → (a) rouge.

…ption branch (#439)

Review of 9131124 (c.6108401332) measured the blind spot: a bare claude-*
whose role modelMap resolves onto a remote lane takes the native exemption
branch, which authenticates via matchesProxyKey (the keyless-mark decision)
and returns next() before the enforce-branch counting — served 200 by the
budget with the retiring key, hits {} on /health. That is the dominant
fleet shape (90% claude-haiku-4-5 forwards), so the P4 criterion would
read green while missed holders headed for a 401 at the cut.

- Count in the exemption branch too; both middleware sites mark the raw
  request (WeakSet on c.req.raw, same identity through next()) and the two
  native swap sites (/v1/messages NativeHandler, count_tokens) skip a
  marked request — one authentication, one count.
- R7 pins the repro verbatim (claude-sonnet-5-5 + modelMap→budget + previous
  key ⇒ 200 served by the budget, counted once); R4/R5 now assert exactly 1
  per request (2 = mark not threaded).
- Mutations executed: exemption call disabled ⇒ R7 red alone; WeakSet skip
  removed ⇒ R4 red at 2; both restored, 6/6 green, strict observed ⊆ baseline.

po-203 : push livré — 47216ad6 (réponse à la review c.6108401332).

Les critères d'acceptation de auth: count which proxy key authenticated during a rotation window (previous-key hits per machine on /health) #439 sont couverts :
    • clé primaire : rien n'est compté ;
    • seau = en-tête machine, sinon jeton UA, et unknown pour un UA hostile ;
    • _PREVIOUS absent : champ omis sur /health ;
    • marqueur limité à 1 par heure et par seau ;
    • aucune donnée de clé, d'empreinte ni d'IP.
