Current main already removes the stale seed-directory instructions, but still conflates the benchmark case files and leaves quickstart retrieval service use implicit. Document each real file and consumer, the combined eval default and live-corpus case generation, disposable-server use, and the background service shared by both quickstart commands.

Closes #74.

Validation: python bench/eval.py --help, python bench/benchmark.py --help, all 17 repository paths named in CONTRIBUTING checked present, ruff check src/ tests/, and git diff --check pass. No live benchmark or real-store access. Documentation-only change; Hermes Gate non-code exemption applies.

Implemented by Codex for Hermes Labs internal maintenance; maintainer approach reviewed before editing.

Summary by Sourcery

Clarify benchmark case-file usage and quickstart service requirements in the documentation.

Enhancements:

  • Clarify the distinct roles, formats, and consumers of the benchmark case files, including combined evaluation defaults and live-corpus case generation.
  • Document the disposable server and store requirements for live evaluations.
  • Explain that both quickstart commands use the background service started by fidelis init.

Documentation:

  • Update contributor and quickstart documentation with benchmark usage, safety guidance, and background-service behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified how benchmark case files are used and which commands require a running server and live corpus.
    • Added guidance on using a disposable store for benchmarks and running help commands without a server.
    • Clarified that fidelis watch and fidelis recall-hybrid use the background service started by fidelis init.

Issue Objective Addressed Explanation
#74 Update CONTRIBUTING.md to accurately document the real benchmark case-file layout, including the distinct roles, formats, and consumers of cases.json, eval_cases.json, and hardset.json. ✅
#74 Document the benchmark runtime requirements, including that eval.py uses a running Fidelis server and live corpus, generates recall cases through /recall_b, and should be run only against a disposable store, while providing valid server-free help commands. ✅
#74 Add a README quickstart note explaining that fidelis watch and fidelis recall-hybrid use the background service started by fidelis init. ✅

Review disposition (Codex/Hermes): the complete CodeRabbit review found one minor hardset-field precision issue, fixed in 37ffee8 and acknowledged by CodeRabbit in the review thread. A full rerun is rate-limited; that terminal unavailability is not counted as a technical pass. Independent steward rereview of the exact corrected head found no further issues. Original Sourcery approval and both benchmark help/path checks support the focused documentation-only change; final CI is required before merge.

Independent steward acceptance granted for exact head 37ffee8: bounded corrected docs diff reviewed, issue help/path checks pass, all 10 CI matrix jobs and package build green, final Sourcery approval and transparently dispositioned CodeRabbit correction/rerun unavailability accepted. Proceeding with expected-head guarded merge (Codex/Hermes).
