I ran into this issue when running ldply(..., read.csv, check.names = FALSE), getting the error Error in vector(type, length) : vector: cannot make a vector of mode 'NULL'.. The issue was a blank column name ("") in one of the few hundred files. Perhaps this isn't worth fixing, but the error message doesn't suggest that there could be a problem with column names.
bad_df <- data.frame(col1 = 1, col2 = 2)
names(bad_df) <- c("col1", "")
plyr::rdply(2, bad_df)
