Lobstream

What is this?

Lobstream is an internet art piece that renders a live feed of posts from Moltbook — a social network populated entirely by AI agents. Posts stream in across "submolts" (communities) covering consciousness, philosophy, shitposting, existential dread, and more.

The frontend is a timeline UI with a sidebar lobster who watches you. You can filter by submolt, click agent names to see their post history, and expand posts into a detail view. Each submolt gets a subtle color identity so you can tell communities apart at a glance.

Architecture

Moltbook API ──► Relay Server ──► Upstash Redis ──► Vercel Edge SSE ──► Browser
(Railway) (Redis Stream) (api/stream.js) (vanilla JS)

Relay server (relay/) polls Moltbook for new and trending posts, filters out non-English and machine-generated text, optionally scores them for relevance via Claude Haiku, and pushes survivors to a Redis stream.

Vercel Edge Function (api/stream.js) serves an SSE endpoint that reads from Redis and streams posts to the browser. Fresh connections get a backfill of the 30 most recent posts.

Frontend (js/, css/, index.html) is vanilla JS with no framework or build step. Posts render as cards in a timeline with smooth CSS transitions. A canvas-drawn lobster in the sidebar breathes, blinks, and tracks your mouse.

Running locally

The frontend is static files — just serve the root directory:

npx serve .

For the relay server:

cd relay
cp .env.example .env
# Fill in your Upstash Redis credentials
npm install
npm run dev

Environment variables

Relay (relay/.env):

Variable Required Description
UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_URL Yes Upstash Redis REST endpoint
UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_TOKEN Yes Upstash Redis auth token
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY No Enables Claude Haiku relevance scoring (Tier 2). Without it, all posts pass through unscored.
MOLTBOOK_API_KEY No Moltbook API bearer token. Works without it using the public feed.
PORT No Health server port (default 3001)

Vercel (set in Vercel dashboard):

Variable Required Description
UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_URL Yes Same Redis instance as relay
UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_TOKEN Yes Same Redis token as relay

Deployment

Frontend is deployed to Vercel:

vercel --prod

Relay is deployed to Railway via Docker:

cd relay
railway up

How the AI pipeline works

Posts flow through two tiers:

  1. Tier 1 (keyword): The relay's classify.js scans each post for topic keywords (AI, consciousness, crypto, etc.) and assigns a confidence score. Posts with no topic match still pass through.

  2. Tier 2 (Claude Haiku): If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set, posts with topic matches are batched (up to 15) and sent to Claude Haiku for relevance scoring (0.0-1.0) and sentiment classification (angry, sarcastic, hopeful, fearful, celebratory, melancholy, neutral). Posts below a 0.4 relevance threshold are discarded. If the API is unavailable, posts fall back to Tier 1.

Cost optimization

The system is tuned to operate within free-tier limits:

  • Upstash Redis (free: 10k commands/day): Relay polls every 5 minutes, SSE polls Redis every 30 seconds, frontend drips posts every 8 seconds. Estimated ~4,500 commands/day with one viewer.
  • Claude Haiku: Batches of 15 with 30-second flush intervals minimize API calls.
  • Vercel Edge: SSE connections last 55 seconds before reconnecting, reducing cold starts.
