Summary

The timeline waveform and the transcription now decode audio the way the compositor exports it.

  • Waveform offset. audioPeaks.ts pulled audio that starts after the video back to zero, so the waveform ran ahead of the transcript and the export. It now pads with aresample=first_pts=0, like extractAudio.ts since fix(stt): preserve media-clock audio offsets #1076.
  • Two audio tracks. Peaks and STT decoded only the stream ffmpeg picks. On older macOS recordings (system + mic) that is the system track, silent when nothing plays, so the mic was lost. A short ffmpeg -i probe counts the audio streams; with two or more, each is aligned and they are summed (amix=normalize=0, as the compositor sums).
  • Single-stream media keeps its previous arguments. The peaks cache key is versioned so stale peaks are recomputed once.

Type of change

  • Bug fix

Release impact

  • Patch

Desktop impact

  • Not platform-specific

Testing

  • New FFmpeg integration tests: delayed audio peaks, two-track peaks, two-track STT. They fail without the fix (old args: 4 failures; fix(stt): preserve media-clock audio offsets #1076 args: both two-track tests fail). They skip in CI, which has no ffmpeg on PATH, like the fix(stt): preserve media-clock audio offsets #1076 tests. Run locally with ffmpeg 6.1.1 and the shipped 8.1.2.
  • countAudioStreams unit test runs in CI.
  • Unchanged waveforms: PCM decoded from 45 real recordings with audio from 0 is byte-identical between old and new arguments. The one recording with audio starting 26 ms late gains exactly 416 samples (26 ms).
  • Probe cost: about 100 ms on a 160 s recording, paid only on a peaks cache miss or a transcription.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Audio extraction now includes audible tracks even when recordings contain multiple audio streams, while preserving their timing on the media timeline.
    • Audio peak decoding now handles single- and multi-track recordings and aligns tracks before mixing.

…d STT

The timeline waveform decoded audio that starts after the video from zero, so it ran ahead of the transcript and the export. Both peaks and transcription also decoded only the audio stream ffmpeg picks, which on older two-track macOS recordings is the system track, while the compositor mixes every track.

Probe the audio streams, align each with aresample=first_pts=0 and sum them with amix (normalize=0, as the compositor sums). Single-stream media keeps the previous arguments, and the peaks cache key is versioned so stale peaks are recomputed.

Audio decoding now probes audio streams and selects FFmpeg arguments that preserve media-clock placement and mix multiple audio streams. Peak decoding and speech-to-text extraction use these arguments. Tests cover stream counting, decoding, extraction, and mocked process timing.

Audio decoding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Probe streams and select audio arguments
electron/media/audioPeaks.ts, electron/media/audioPeaks.test.ts
The stream probe counts audio streams. Argument selection uses a media-clock filter when fewer than two streams are found, and aligns and mixes streams when two or more are found.
Apply stream selection in peak decoding
electron/media/audioPeaks.ts, electron/media/audioPeaks.test.ts
decodePeaks uses the selected FFmpeg arguments. Cache keys include a v2: prefix. Tests cover delayed audio and multi-track decoding.
Apply stream selection in speech-to-text extraction
electron/stt/extractAudio.ts, electron/stt/extractAudio.test.ts, electron/stt/extractAudio.integration.test.ts
extractMono16kPcm resolves FFmpeg arguments before spawning and checks for cancellation after the probe. Tests cover multi-track extraction and wait for mocked processes to spawn before sending events.

Cancelling transcription may take up to ten seconds while the audio probe is stalled. This is a bounded issue, but the probe should respond to cancellation.
