fix: append labelled scatter points to their own class - #1972
For an unnamed update, the server paired the incoming entries with the plot's
traces by position. A labelled scatter append only sends the labels present
in that batch, so a batch holding only "dog" was added to "cat", and a new
label was added to an existing trace instead of getting its own.
The pairing is now a small helper, pair_traces, used by UpdateHandler.update:
an entry whose name matches an existing trace goes to that trace
an entry whose name matches none becomes a new trace
two cases stay positional, as before:
entries without names
entries named "1", "2", ... in order when none of those names is on the
plot. That is what the client sends for a line whose legend renamed its
traces, so those appends keep working.
Named updates (name=...) are unchanged.
The scatter docstring now says appended points join their own label's trace,
and that a plot created with opts.legend should get the same legend when
appending, so the labels map to those trace names.
Note for #1888 / #1806: both build the append patch by walking the same zip(idxs, new_data) pairing. If either lands, it can call pair_traces so
the patch and the stored pane stay in step.
Fixes #ISSUE_NUMBER
Motivation and Context
Appending predictions or embeddings batch by batch, coloured by class, is a
common way to use a scatter during training. Each batch rarely contains every
class, so points ended up silently filed under the wrong class.
How Has This Been Tested?
py/tests/unit/trace_pairing.py (new): name match, order independence,
new labels, a batch of only new labels, the default-name positional case,
unnamed entries, repeated names.
py/tests/integration/update_plots.py: TestUnnamedTraceMatching drives /update over HTTP. Its four class tests fail on dev, and the positional
line case passes both before and after.
To check nothing else changed, I ran all 81 demos in example/components/
against a live server on dev and on this branch, with the same random seed,
and compared every window's traces: all 81 end up identical.
pytest -m "not server" passes apart from Windows-only failures that also
happen on dev. black --check is clean.

Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
Ensure labelled scatter appends update the correct class traces while preserving existing positional line behavior.
Bug Fixes:
Fix unnamed labelled scatter appends so entries update traces with matching labels and unseen labels create separate traces instead of being paired by position.
Enhancements:
Preserve positional append behavior for unnamed data and legend-renamed line traces while supporting label-aware trace matching.
Improve legend handling so numbered and previously legended traces retain the correct labels across updates and appends.
Document label-based scatter append behavior and legend requirements.
Documentation:
Update scatter documentation to describe label-based append behavior and consistent legend usage.
Tests:
Add unit, integration, and broadcast coverage for label matching, new traces, positional fallbacks, legend updates, and marker handling.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Scatter plot updates now match incoming points to existing traces by name when possible, regardless of batch order. Unmatched names create new traces; unnamed entries and default numeric names retain positional pairing in applicable cases.
Legend updates can map traces with numeric names to their corresponding legend positions, including when names are reordered or have gaps.
Documentation
Clarified how labels determine trace matching when appending points, and that plots using integer labels with a legend require the same legend on each append.
A labelled scatter append only sends the labels present in that batch,
and the server paired those entries with the plot's traces by position.
So a batch holding only 'dog' was added to 'cat', and a new label was
added to an existing trace instead of getting its own.
Pair each entry with the trace of the same name when any entry names an
existing trace, and make the unmatched ones new traces. With no name to
match, keep pairing by position: a line whose legend renamed its traces
still appends under the default names.
With no name matching, pairing fell back to position, so a batch holding
only a new label still went into the first trace. Keep the positional
fallback only for entries without names and for the client's default
names 1, 2, ... that a legend-renamed line appends with.
Fixes unnamed labelled scatter appends by pairing entries with traces by name, creating traces for unseen labels, and retaining legacy positional behavior for unnamed and legend-renamed line updates; adds unit/integration coverage and updates the scatter documentation.

Walkthrough
Scatter updates now pair entries with traces by name when possible and use positional fallback in specified cases. Unmatched entries become new traces. Legend updates map trace names to legend positions.
Changes: Scatter trace pairing

Summary
Pair updates with traces py/visdom/server/handlers/web_handlers.py, py/tests/unit/trace_pairing.py, py/tests/unit/update_broadcast.py, py/tests/integration/update_plots.py, py/visdom/__init__.py
The update handler pairs entries with existing traces by name when possible and uses positional fallback in specified cases. It adds unmatched entries as traces. Tests cover pairing, append-path selection, and legend-bearing appends. The scatter documentation describes label and legend mapping for appends.
Map trace names to legend entries py/visdom/utils/server_utils.py, py/visdom/server/handlers/web_handlers.py, py/tests/unit/window_builder.py
Legend updates select positions from the prior legend or valid 1-based decimal trace names. They use positional mapping when those mappings are unavailable or duplicated. Tests cover numeric and ordinary names, reordered legends, and repeated updates.
Appending to a labelled scatter created with a legend that covers more labels than the plot uses can rename existing classes on the first update and put points in a new trace. Store the creation legend, or handle panes without one, before merging. The other previously raised pairing and legend-mapping problems are fixed.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to ee7ec
The change remains within existing plot-write permissions and preserves read-only restrictions. No new access-control bypass was established. Residual uncertainty concerns malformed-batch recovery and trace-name guarantees, rather than new privileges or service exposure.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A caller permitted to write can influence trace selection and creation in the requested pane, with resulting updates delivered to subscribers of that environment. The comparison establishes no additional environment-selection authority; trace labels are routing data, not authorization identities.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Authentication delegates to the existing authorization check, while read-only mode rejects mutation before the handler runs. The routed integration entrypoints are test helpers that issue HTTP requests to the existing application; they do not add production endpoints.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Malformed batches can fail after earlier entries have mutated pane state, before normal versioning and publication. The snapshot used for patch generation does not restore state on exceptions. This failure-containment limitation predates the PR, and newly appended unmatched traces can also be affected; no broader security exposure was established.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — As separate hardening, validate complete batches before mutation or stage changes until successful completion, so failed requests cannot leave unversioned partial state. This addresses an existing failure-containment limitation rather than a verified new vulnerability.

**Positional order is not observable**
When the handler reverses the positional pairing for the two entries, when the handler pairs the two default-named entries with the traces in reverse order, `test_no_matching_name_keeps_positional_pairing` still passes: both entries append the same `x` value, and the assertion checks only `xs`, so it cannot distinguish the pairings.
Give the two entries distinct point values and assert the resulting per-trace x or y values through HTTP.

Sourcery assessment
Needs a human reviewer. 1 finding to address first, and if the matching logic is wrong, an append can put points into the wrong plot trace or create an unintended trace, and that altered window state remains after a revert. The state is bounded and can be corrected by rebuilding or updating the plot, so this is repairable rather than irreversible.

A scatter with traces '2' and '3' appending label 1 sends '1', which the
fallback for a legend-renamed line took for a default name and paired
with '2'. Only fall back when the plot's traces were renamed.
The scatter docstring also told string-label users to repeat the legend,
which doesn't work since string labels are renumbered per call. String
labels name their own traces, so the advice is now for integer labels.
The positional test appended the same value to both traces and so could
not tell a swapped pairing apart; it uses distinct values now.

@piyush182004 I noticed a trace-matching issue when appending data to an existing plot. If the existing traces have default names and the appended data uses a legend, new traces may be created instead of updating the existing ones.
