UT 99 (v436) - Intro is very slow (< 5 fps)

After commit 3fb13da intro started playing at the beginning of the game, but it is very slow (even the Game menu is lagging). But after I start playing on the map with bots, performance returns to normal.

Tested on my Elbrus-801PC (Elbrus-8C 1.3 GHz CPU, Radeon R7 240 GPU with amdgpu driver, Linux 5.10, Mesa 21.3.9, Vulkan 1.2.203).

Make sure you use a release build. The intro at the beginning has fog, which is extremely slow in the debug builds unfortunately.

Just noticed you wrote its using an Elbrus-801PC. I'm not familiar with that CPU. It could also be its performance is just too low for the fog code we are using currently. Not entirely sure to be honest.

Anyhow, make sure you have the release build enabled in CMake, because otherwise it does run terribly slow as you described.

Yep, I use -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release option in CMake.

Can you show this part in the code? Maybe we can try to optimize it?

You could try define NOFOG and see if that helps. FogmapBuilder.cpp contains the code doing the fog calculations. No doubt it could be improved a lot.

I used #define NOFOG in /SurrealEngine/Render/RenderFog.cpp, but it didn't help me. Most likely the problem is in some other place.

I'm sorry, don't know then. All I can say is the intro runs about the same speed on my computer as any other map, once fog is disabled.

From the discussion I suppose a platform-specific issue, E2K is a different kind of beast. Maybe some profiling and digging for specific optimizations would help here.

Позволю себе ремарку на родном языке: советуя оптимизации, я беру во внимание существующий опыт портирования игр под E2K. Возможно, он применим и здесь. Но явно надо попрофилировать... А ещё, посоветовал бы попробовать поднять утекшие исходники UT v432 (если ещё нет) и попробовать сделать их билд под E2K. Вдруг что-то дельное выйдет.
