Issue being fixed or feature implemented

The 4.2.0-beta.5 NPM release failed on ubuntu-server-2 because DAPI generation bind-mounted checkout paths through the host Docker daemon. Those paths exist inside the runner container, not necessarily on the host. The new self-hosted runner image intentionally provides neither Docker access nor sudo.

This makes generation native and makes the actual release build part of runner-image validation. Companion: dashpay/dash-selfhosted-image#2.

What was done?

  • Replace nested Docker generation with a checksum-pinned native toolchain, preserving protobuf 3.18.1, gRPC 1.46.3, gRPC Java 1.42.1 and ts-protoc-gen 0.15.0. Rust retains its separate protoc 32.0. No generated client changes.
  • Stage all generated languages before replacing the client tree. Failed plugins preserve the previous clients; handwritten JS clients are retained. Support checkout paths containing spaces.
  • Add an unprivileged local installer using the exact companion recipe commit and SHA-256 checks, plus the Yarn dependency/zero-install cache for the TypeScript plugin.
  • Replace hosted JS CI's Docker login/image cache with native compiler setup.
  • Share release compilation/packing in npm-release-build; verify the provisioned image, remove sudo/Docker assumptions, retain Cargo caches and hosted OIDC publishing. Preserve release packing's existing ignore-file preparation order.
  • Route releases through a protected reusable workflow in the restricted platform-npm-releases group (npm-build). Ordinary PR validation uses separate npm-pr capacity and storage. Add a candidate workflow using the same release action, DAPI tests and archive-content verification. Extend the runner selector from ci: remove host privilege requirements from persistent Linux runners #4702 with an NPM job kind.
  • Pin the image requirements and document per-branch rollout, bootstrap/controller revision requirements and rollback.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • Built the native compiler/plugins on macOS ARM64 and Linux AMD64.
  • Generated the entire client tree with the old protoc Docker image and the native toolchain: byte-for-byte identical. Also generated on Linux as UID 1001 with all capabilities dropped, no-new-privileges and no Docker socket.
  • 32 DAPI unit tests pass; three real generation regressions pass (all languages/idempotence/spaces, late-plugin failure preserves output, wrong toolchain rejection).
  • Packed the DAPI workspace and verified all 25 Node/web client files against the freshly generated source.
  • Hosted Linux and macOS native-generation CI passed for the native generator changes, including source compilation, output checks, regressions, unit tests and archive verification.
  • Ten runner selector/release-boundary tests pass, including execution of the actual pre-checkout guard against release, dispatch, PR and fork contexts; actionlint/schema validation, targeted ShellCheck and diff checks pass. These contract tests also run on hosted CI.
  • The hosted full JavaScript/WASM build and affected package tests passed before the final release-routing-only changes.
  • The companion's full image build and confined compiler/runner smoke tests passed locally. Its CI also exercises KVM on Linux.
  • The complete NPM/WASM release build on the provisioned candidate remains an activation gate; it has not been represented as completed by the focused generation checks.

Breaking Changes

No change to generated clients or consumer APIs. Local contributors provision native compilers with python3 packages/dapi-grpc/scripts/setup-codegen.py --install (Python 3.12+, CMake and a C++ compiler), replacing the Docker prerequisite.

Operationally, do not merge the release routing before compatible release and PR capacity is available and isolated. This change requires the companion image/controller and the trusted bootstrap/Rust/Kotlin candidate routing from #4912/#4702 on the consuming branch. Reconcile their manifest/selector files with this NPM extension, and update both bootstrap pins (uses and control_revision) to the reviewed image implementation. Configure the organization runner group to allow only dashpay/platform/.github/workflows/release-npm-build.yml@refs/heads/v4.2-dev, protect that branch, and keep release registrations, HOME, workspaces and Cargo cache volumes separate from PR pools. Organization support for selected-workflow runner-group restrictions still needs infra confirmation; the current token cannot inspect runner groups (HTTP 403). GitHub documents that feature under Enterprise Cloud. The group restriction is mandatory; labels and the inline guard alone do not establish isolation. Validate rejected PR scheduling and an allowed release dry-run before activation. Existing fork guards remain unchanged; skipped candidate jobs cannot satisfy promotion. This PR targets the current default v4.2-dev; the same contract must be reconciled on v4.3-dev. No live runners or release tags were changed.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a pinned native toolchain for DAPI client generation and staged client updates. It also adds self-hosted NPM runner-image selection, a shared release build action, and workflows that validate generated clients and NPM packages.

Changes

Runner and client codegen

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pin and provision the client toolchain
packages/dapi-grpc/codegen.json, packages/dapi-grpc/scripts/setup-codegen.py, packages/dapi-grpc/package.json, .pnp.cjs, packages/dapi-grpc/README.md
Pins the native generator sources and versions, adds setup and verification logic, and documents toolchain selection and build commands.
Generate and verify client outputs
packages/dapi-grpc/scripts/build.sh, packages/dapi-grpc/scripts/patch-protobuf-js.sh, packages/dapi-grpc/tests/codegen/*, packages/dapi-grpc/scripts/check-packed-clients.py, packages/dapi-grpc/.npmignore
Generates clients in a staged tree and replaces the existing clients only after generation and patching succeed. Adds generation, failure-preservation, and packed-client checks.
Define and select runner images
.github/runner-requirements.json, .github/scripts/runner-image.py, .github/scripts/tests/test_runner_image.py, .github/actionlint.yaml, .github/NPM_RUNNER.md
Defines the runner contract and selects ordinary or candidate-image labels based on PR and publisher validation. Documents runner requirements and promotion checks.
Build NPM packages on the configured runner
.github/actions/rust/action.yaml, .github/actions/npm-release-build/action.yaml, .github/workflows/release.yml
Adds system-dependency verification and a shared NPM build-and-pack action. The release job uses the npm-build runner and the shared action.
Validate runner and client builds
.github/workflows/npm-runner-validation.yml, .github/workflows/test-client-codegen.yml, .github/workflows/tests-build-js.yml, .github/NPM_RUNNER.md
Adds runner-image and client-codegen validation workflows. The JavaScript build fallback installs native generators and caches them by platform and codegen lock. Documentation describes validation coverage.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 28a60

A permitted PR build could affect a later release build through files left on the shared runner. Isolate or verify Cargo state before merging; ensure the documented npm-runner prerequisites are met before activation.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 28a60

Allowed pull requests can run builds on persistent release-runner capacity. Workspace cleanup does not isolate all build state, so a later release could be affected by state left by an earlier build. Publishing credentials remain on a separate hosted runner.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: New pull-request validation runs the release build on persistent npm-build capacity. Its workspace cleanup does not clear writable runner HOME state that a subsequent release build can use; the workflow does not establish provenance or isolation across those executions.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected boundary is admitted pull-request code, persistent npm-build runner state, and later release artifacts for this repository. The build job has no OIDC publishing permission; direct access to the hosted publish job is not shown.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Admitted pull-request build code can write outside the workspace. Later release execution clears workspace files but retains runner HOME and the external Cargo target directory; a poisoned dependency or build environment could affect packed output. A specific poisoned artifact being consumed has not been demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Candidate selection checks the current PR head, manifest match, status creator, digest shape, and successful publisher run. The status digest is not independently compared with the referenced run's published digest in this selector; whether another authorized publisher can exploit that distinction remains unresolved.
  • observed — Before publishing, the hosted job checks tarball package identities against its checkout, rejects unexpected publish configuration, and does not run tarball scripts. Those checks constrain credential exposure but do not establish the provenance of all packaged bytes.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Separate validation and release target-cache names prevent ordinary target-cache reuse, and several release tools are refreshed or checksum-verified. Neither measure cleans arbitrary HOME state after a failed or interrupted validation build.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate pull-request builds from release builds at the runner or user-state boundary, or recreate and verify writable build state before release. Confirm the deployed candidate publisher and controller contracts before relying on digest-specific NPM routing.
