Final validation — Phase 2 only (queue backlog)
The protocol-14 history implementation is broadly covered by versioned storage, migration, query, and proof tests. Three issues remain: proof-disabled SDK history requests are still emitted even though the fetch path requires proofs, lifecycle metadata verification disables authenticated absence checks, and the activation migration has no consensus-safe resource bound despite the PR explicitly identifying this as an unresolved release gate. The checked-in non-Rust gRPC bindings also do not expose the new history-v1 messages.

In `packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/query.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/query.rs:296-326: Reject proof-disabled history fetches before sending an unparseable request
The history query encoder converts the limit and sends `prove: settings.prove` without rejecting proof-disabled settings. Both `DocumentHistory` and `DocumentHistoryProofInfo` use the proved `Fetch` implementations, and no unproved history fetch implementation exists. Therefore `SdkBuilder::with_proofs(false)` sends a request whose response cannot be consumed by these fetch paths and fails later as a missing or invalid proof response. Rejecting this combination during request construction preserves the SDK behavior used by other proof-only queries and gives callers a deterministic local error.
In `packages/dapi-grpc/protos/platform/v0/platform.proto`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/dapi-grpc/protos/platform/v0/platform.proto:1748-1817: Regenerate checked-in non-Rust protobuf clients for history v1
The proto schema adds `GetDocumentHistoryRequestV1` and `GetDocumentHistoryResponseV1`, but the checked-in Node, web, and Python generated bindings contain no corresponding V1 definitions. The new Rust SDK can use the schema, while consumers using these checked-in language clients cannot construct a V1 request or access the V1 response fields. Since protocol 14 rejects legacy history requests, those clients lose document-history functionality after activation. Regenerate and commit the checked-in language bindings using the repository's gRPC generation workflow.
In `packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/history/mod.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/history/mod.rs:234-242: Require absence proofs for history lifecycle metadata
`metadata_query` issues three per-document metadata lookups with `SizedQuery::new(query, None, None)`, and verification explicitly sets `absence_proofs_for_non_existing_searched_keys` to `false`. The lifecycle code uses missing pointer/tree metadata to report states such as `Absent` and zero retained revisions. Without authenticated absence proofs, a response can omit an existing metadata key and still be accepted against the root, so the client can accept an unauthenticated lifecycle state. Give each metadata lookup a per-key limit of `Some(1)` and enable absence-proof verification for this metadata proof.

Every upgrade from a pre-14 protocol synchronously runs `migrate_document_history_storage` in the first activation block and propagates any error. The migration enumerates all contracts and history-keeping document types, reads retained revisions and index references, and applies the work in the activation transaction. There is no consensus-safe bound on revisions, documents, index references, bytes, elapsed time, or memory; the returned statistics are only logged. A permissionless contract owner can accumulate substantial retained history before activation subject to ordinary storage fees, causing every validator to exceed proposal-time or memory limits. A failed round retries the same migration, potentially preventing protocol activation. The PR description explicitly leaves authentic-state timing and validator-resource acceptance incomplete, so the synthetic benchmark does not establish a safe bound. The migration must be bounded or staged, or activation must enforce and demonstrate a pre-activation resource limit that fits the validator budget.

Final validation — Phase 2 only (queue backlog)
The protocol-14 history migration remains an unbounded, synchronous operation inside the activation transaction, and the PR explicitly documents that validator-resource acceptance is still incomplete. The revision selectors also reject values above 65535 despite exposing u64 revisions and using u64 document revision fields, making valid high-revision histories inaccessible through revision-based queries.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/history/mod.rs:181-185: Do not cap valid 64-bit document revisions at u16::MAX
`DocumentHistorySelector::StartAtRevision` and `Revision` accept u64 values, and the underlying document revision and protobuf fields are also 64-bit. `validate` nevertheless rejects every revision above 65535, so a document with retained revision 65536 or later cannot be addressed through either revision selector. The cast to u16 in `entries_query_v1` explains the implementation limitation but does not establish a public 16-bit protocol limit; replace the offset-based lookup with a range/composite-key query or otherwise support the full advertised revision domain.

(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/4652#discussion_r3989209403)
The protocol-14 activation hook invokes `migrate_document_history_storage` synchronously for the entire pre-14 persisted state and propagates migration errors, so the work runs in the activation transaction and is retried if the round fails. The migration enumerates all contracts and history-keeping document types, materializes retained revisions and per-type index inventories in memory, and rewrites the records without a consensus-safe bound on documents, revisions, index entries, bytes, execution time, or memory. A permissionless contract owner can grow this state before activation subject only to ordinary storage fees, potentially exceeding validator memory, I/O, or Tenderdash proposal-time budgets and preventing protocol activation. The logged statistics and synthetic benchmark measure observed work but do not constrain future state or establish a validator-safe upper bound. Bound the migration with an enforceable pre-activation resource limit or stage the work across consensus-safe transactions before activation.

Preliminary review — Phase 1 blocker gate
The current head adds only a JavaScript test stub; the previously identified proof-handling issues are resolved or intentionally deferred. The protocol-14 activation migration remains an unbounded, synchronous operation over permissionlessly growable document history and can exceed proposal or validator resource budgets, so the release-blocking concern remains valid.
Validated blockers were found by the Phase-1 review and confirmed by a fresh verifier. Phase 2 is deferred until a fresh same-head revalidation clears the blocker gate.

The protocol-14 activation path still runs `migrate_document_history_storage` synchronously for every upgrade from a protocol version below 14, inside the activation transaction, and propagates any error. The migration enumerates the existing contracts, history-keeping document types, retained revisions, and index references without a consensus-safe bound on documents, revisions, bytes, elapsed time, or peak memory. Contract owners can grow retained history before activation while paying only ordinary storage fees. Every validator must then repeat the full migration during proposal processing, and a failed round repeats the same work; an over-budget migration can prevent protocol activation. The testnet inventory and synthetic benchmark establish performance for those specific states but do not impose a limit or demonstrate that future worst-case state fits the Tenderdash proposal and validator resource budgets. Bound the work, stage it across blocks, or enforce a pre-activation resource limit with evidence that it fits the validator budget.

These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
- Do not cap valid 64-bit document revisions at u16::MAX — INTENTIONAL_EXCLUSION: The implementation deliberately uses GroveDB's u16 count-bound offset for revision selectors; values above the limit fail explicitly, while time selectors and cursors still provide access to the full history. The author response identifies replacing this with a revision index as a separate design choice outside this change.
- Follow-up: Consider creating a separate issue or author/maintainer-requested PR for this.

Preliminary review — Phase 1 blocker gate
The protocol-14 history implementation includes authenticated queries and rollback-safe migration behavior, and the previously reported proof, metadata, and test issues were addressed. The activation migration remains an unbounded synchronous operation in the first protocol-activation block, and it also contains a panic path for unexpected persisted data; both can halt or prevent activation and require correction before merge.

- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/migration/mod.rs:345-360: Return a deterministic error instead of panicking on an unexpected index leaf
The activation migration runs on the block-execution path, but the rewrite closure uses `unreachable!` when an inventory entry is not a reference element. Although valid pre-14 state is expected to satisfy the invariant, corrupted or unexpected persisted state would panic the node rather than return the repository's deterministic corruption error through the migration result. A panic during consensus processing can halt the chain or make activation behavior depend on node-local state handling. Replace this arm with an error such as `return Err(corrupt("unexpected leaf in a historical document index"))`, restructuring the iterator if necessary so the error propagates through `migrate_document_history_storage`.

The first block below protocol 14 synchronously runs `migrate_document_history_storage` inside the activation transaction. That migration enumerates all retained histories and index references and applies the rewrites without a consensus-enforced bound on work, bytes, elapsed time, or peak memory; the returned statistics are logged but do not constrain execution. Retained history can grow before activation through ordinary permissionless document activity, so the current synthetic/testnet measurements do not establish that the migration fits the Tenderdash proposal budget or validator memory. A failed round repeats the same migration, potentially preventing protocol activation. Bound the migration, stage it across blocks, or enforce a pre-activation resource limit with release-profile evidence on authentic state.

The public selectors and protobuf fields use `u64`, but validation rejects revisions above `u16::MAX`, and the query implementation then uses a `u16` count-bound offset. This makes part of the advertised selector domain unusable: retained revision 65536 or later cannot be selected by revision-based queries. Time selectors and cursors provide a workaround, but they do not reconcile the public 64-bit type with the explicit ceiling. Either support the full `u64` domain through a suitable range/index query or expose the implementation's narrower limit in the public API and protocol contract.

Preliminary review — Phase 1 blocker gate
The protocol-14 activation migration still executes synchronously over the entire retained-history inventory in the shared activation transaction, without a consensus-safe bound on work, memory, or elapsed time. This can make activation exceed proposal or validator resource budgets as pre-activation history grows, and a failed activation round retries the same migration.

The protocol-14 activation path synchronously calls `migrate_document_history_storage` for the complete retained-history inventory and propagates any error, while `DocumentHistoryMigrationStats` is only logged. The migration can enumerate contracts and document types, build per-type index inventories, load retained document histories, and rewrite indexes in the shared activation transaction without a consensus-safe limit on revisions, documents, index references, bytes, elapsed time, or memory. Permissionless contract owners can grow retained history before activation subject to ordinary storage fees, forcing every validator to perform the same potentially oversized work during proposal processing. If the block misses the proposal or resource budget, the migration is retried on the next round. The synthetic benchmark and current testnet inventory measure present workload but do not enforce or establish a bound. Stage the migration across blocks, or enforce a deterministic pre-activation limit proven to fit validator budgets.

- Do not cap valid 64-bit document revisions at u16::MAX — NOT_ACTIONABLE: the implementation deliberately restricts revision selectors to the u16 GroveDB count-bound offset domain and returns an explicit validation error; time selectors and cursor pagination remain available for histories beyond that domain. Supporting arbitrary u64 revision selectors requires a separate revision-index design outside this PR.

Two blocking issues remain: activation performs an unbounded migration, and new history-storage behavior is implemented inside frozen method generations. Expected revision-query rejections also become retryable internal server errors. The two platform-version history regression tests passed; the explicitly documented wire replacement and deferred client regeneration are not additional blockers.

- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/contract/insert/insert_contract/v0/mod.rs:289-299: Keep protocol-14 history behavior out of shipped v0 implementations
The new history-tree insertion is implemented directly in `insert_contract_operations_v0`, which `insert_contract_operations_v1` calls. This PR similarly adds history-tree creation to `update_contract/v0` and threads version-dependent reference behavior through `update_document_for_contract_operations/v0`. The structure-version gate preserves the old branch selection for protocols 12/13, so this is not evidence of an existing replay mismatch. It nevertheless violates the explicit frozen-generation rule in `book/src/contributing/coding-conventions.md`, which specifically prohibits adding version checks or parameters inside shipped generations, even when the new branch is inactive for historical versions. Move this PR's history-specific changes into new implementation generations selected only by protocol 14, preserving the shipped implementations and signatures.
In `packages/rs-drive-abci/src/query/document_history/v0/mod.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-abci/src/query/document_history/v0/mod.rs:83-88: Preserve expected history-query rejections as query errors
Revision filters on migrated histories with gaps deliberately return `drive::error::Error::Query(QuerySyntaxError::Unsupported(...))`. The `?` here, and in the unproved branch, converts that expected rejection into the outer ABCI `Error::Drive`. `query/service.rs::error_into_status` then returns gRPC `Internal`, which the DAPI client treats as retryable, instead of the `InvalidArgument` used for `QueryError::Query`. Consequently, a valid migrated history can produce a misleading server failure and futile retries. Match the Drive query-error variant in both branches and return it through `QueryValidationResult`, while propagating storage and corruption errors normally. The neighboring document-query handler already follows this distinction; add coverage for proved and unproved revision requests on gapped histories.

This call completes the entire migration synchronously in the activation transaction. Contract enumeration is paginated, but `history_migration_entries` uses unlimited subtree queries, each document's retained revisions are materialized, and `index_entries` holds the complete per-type index inventory. Neither these allocations nor total migration work have an enforced resource budget. Your committed-testnet measurement establishes that the measured inventory is manageable; it does not constrain subsequent valid history growth before activation. A larger inventory can exhaust validator memory or exceed activation-block processing capacity, and rollback leaves that inventory unchanged for the next attempt. Bound the work through deterministic staging with compatible layout routing, or enforce a pre-activation inventory budget demonstrated to fit supported validator resources. A local wall-clock cutoff alone would not be consensus-safe.
Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (1)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
- Synchronize generated protobuf clients in the separate follow-up — The checked-in web binding still encodes offset at field 5 and prove at field 7, while the current schema uses those fields for prove and the composite cursor. Regeneration remains a concrete interoperability follow-up. It is excluded from this PR's requested changes because the author explicitly separated generator drift, and the current Evo SDK history facade calls the updated WASM implementation.
- Follow-up: Regenerate and review the checked-in non-Rust clients in the agreed separate PR, including history request/response compatibility checks.

as far as I remember we gonna drop existing structure of historical documents why would we keep v0 queries then?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The storage structure is replaced at activation, but the wire is versioned: nodes below protocol 14 (mainnet until activation, every test-suite network at 13) still serve v0, and the SDKs pick v1 only once the platform version they run against is 14. Dropping v0 from the proto would break every client that talks to a pre-14 node and the protocol 12/13 replay tests. From protocol 14 the server refuses a v0 request with an explicit "unsupported" error (should_report_legacy_history_as_unsupported_after_activation), so it stays on the wire only for the versions that need it. Proto messages in DAPI are also never removed once shipped, only superseded.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed. Removing the v0 history query from the wire and the stack: the GetDocumentHistoryRequestV0/ResponseV0 messages, the drive-abci v0 handler, the proof-verifier v0 branch and the legacy readers behind them (fetch_document_history, prove_document_history, verify_document_history v0). The protocol 12/13 writers stay, since replay still needs them. A 4.2 node that has not activated yet will answer a history query with an explicit unsupported error, which is fine given testnet activates right away and mainnet has no such contracts.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done in 34cfacf: the v0 request and response are gone from the proto (field 1 reserved), together with the drive-abci v0 handler, the proof-verifier v0 branch and the Drive legacy readers; the protocol 14 query bound now starts at version 1, and a node below 14 answers the query with an explicit unsupported error. The protocol 12/13 writers are untouched. The DAPI build script and the versioned-message derive learned a version range so the two history messages carry version 1 only.

why no to just replace v0?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done in 2c40d10: the new shape now sits in the v0 slot (field 1), the v1 slot and the reserved field are gone, and the drive-abci handler, the query bounds, the proof verifier and the SDK follow. I had kept a v1 slot because the timestamp-keyed v0 shipped in v4.1.1, so a 4.1 client's request bytes now decode against the new message instead of failing on an unknown version; with no released network holding keep-history documents that distinction buys nothing.

why we split proof? it must be one proof object, isn't?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
They are two proofs because they answer two GroveDB queries that GroveDB cannot merge into one. entries_proof is the offset-paginated proof over the document's history tree (a ProvableCountTree; the revision selectors are served by a count-bound offset, which needs the V1 count-offset envelope). metadata_proof is an exact-key query over three sibling trees, the current pointer, the lifecycle record and the history tree's count, verified with absence proofs so a missing key is proven missing. GroveDB refuses per-instance limits under absence-proof verification and cannot carry offset pagination inside a merged multi-branch query, so one proof would have to give up either the authenticated absence or the pagination. Both proofs are verified against the same root hash under the one signature in the metadata, and the verifier rejects a pair whose roots differ. Comment added in fca0a76.

we have path query merge and things like this. we have one proof always, look at the code and we deal with situations when we have multiple queries/paths
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I checked the code path you mean. PathQuery::merge is what folds several queries into one proof, and it refuses any input that carries an offset: grovedb query/merge/v1.rs returns "can not merge pathqueries with offsets". The by-revision selectors (revision, start_at_revision) are served through the count-bound offset of the history tree, which is the only way to reach a revision without a revision index, so their entries query cannot be merged with the three metadata lookups. That is why the response carries two GroveDB proofs today. To give the API one proof object anyway, I will pack both GroveDB proofs into the single Proof message (one grovedb_proof payload with a small versioned two-part envelope, one signature, one metadata block), so the wire, the verifier and every SDK see one proof; only the drive verifier splits it. The alternative is dropping the by-revision selectors so everything merges natively. Going with the envelope unless you prefer the alternative.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done in 34cfacf: the response carries one Proof. Its grovedb_proof is a small versioned envelope (version byte, metadata proof behind a big-endian length, presence byte and, when present, the entries proof behind its length; decoded with full consumption) around the two GroveDB proofs that PathQuery::merge cannot combine because the by-revision selectors need an offset. Callers see one proof, one signature and one metadata block; only the drive verifier splits the payload, and the wasm proof-info result exposes the single proof.

It was there because the response did not follow the usual oneof result { data | proof } shape: a proved response carried entries and lifecycle next to a plain proof field, which the derive cannot read. Fixed in f03bdd3: the response is now oneof result { History history = 1; Proof proof = 2; } ResponseMetadata metadata = 3;, the hand-written accessors are gone and the derive covers it. The verifier no longer compares claimed fields against the proof; it returns what the proof authenticates.

These are the tests of the v0 writer, the pre-14 layout that protocol 12 and 13 replay. At latest (14) the method table selects the v1 writer, so latest would make them exercise the new layout and leave the legacy one untested; 13 is the last protocol version that still routes to v0. The v1 tests use latest.

We do: packages/rs-drive/src/drive/contract/migration/ already holds strip_unknown_document_schema_properties and, since #4749, add_version_items_to_all_contracts, both called from the protocol-change hook in drive-abci the same way this one is. This module follows that shape under document/migration/. If you would rather the history migration lived in drive-abci next to the hook I can move it, but it needs Drive internals (the tree layouts and batch helpers) that are pub(crate).

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 2 only (queue backlog)
Verification at ef9a812 confirms two blockers: the single-block migration has no enforced resource bound, and the cursor-proof verifier introduces new behavior inside a frozen generation. The new WASM history response also loses the standard serialization methods; the legacy wire/reader replacement is explicitly declared, and generated-client synchronization is deferred. All eight prior findings were reconciled against source; no files were changed and tests were not rerun.

The existing v0 verifier now passes `platform_version` into the changed cursor-path helper, which selects the legacy document subtree or the protocol-14 primary pointer through `keep_history_storage`. Its dispatcher still supports only version 0, and `DRIVE_VERIFY_METHOD_VERSIONS_V3` inherits `verify_start_at_document_in_proof: 0`. Although the layout gate preserves the old-version path, `book/src/contributing/coding-conventions.md` explicitly forbids introducing new version-dependent behavior by threading a parameter through a shipped generation. Preserve v0's legacy cursor lowering, introduce a v1 verifier for the new layout, and select it only in protocol 14's verification table. Exercise both layouts through the dispatcher.

`getDocumentHistoryWithProofInfo` previously returned `ProofMetadataResponseWasm`, which exports `toJSON`, `fromJSON`, `toObject`, and `fromObject`. It now returns `DocumentHistoryProofMetadataResponseWasm`, whose exported implementation contains only getters. Consequently, callers lose the standard response serialization API, and ordinary `JSON.stringify` does not serialize the Rust-held data, metadata, and proof through those getters. The new history data shape does not require dropping this functionality. Reuse the common proof-response wrapper or implement equivalent serialization methods with explicit handling for nested documents and BigInt fields.

(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/4652#discussion_r3989209403)
This hook requires the entire history migration to finish in one activation-block transaction. Contract pagination only bounds individual enumeration pages: `history_migration_entries` performs unlimited queries, retained revisions are materialized together, and `history_migration_index_entries` accumulates the complete per-type reference inventory. The resulting statistics are logged, not enforced as limits. Your authentic testnet measurement establishes that the measured checkpoint is manageable, but neither running once nor having a small current inventory constrains valid state growth before activation. If the inventory exceeds validator capacity, rollback discards progress and the next attempt repeats the same work. Stage migration with deterministic bounded work and memory, or enforce a pre-activation inventory bound and demonstrate that its maximum fits supported validator resources. A timeout that merely aborts the activation attempt does not resolve this liveness problem.
Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (1)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
- Synchronize generated history clients before publishing them — The checked-in non-Rust bindings still describe the timestamp/offset request and old response entries, while platform.proto now defines the replacement V0 shape. The author explicitly assigned regeneration to a separate PR because the generator also rewrites unrelated stale output; the Evo SDK history facade uses WASM rather than these bindings.
- Follow-up: Complete the separate generated-client update against the final schema and validate request/response serialization before publishing the affected client packages.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 2 only (queue backlog)
The protocol-14 history storage, proof, version-dispatch, and SDK changes address the prior correctness and compatibility findings. One blocking availability issue remains: activation still performs an unbounded migration of attacker-expandable historical state synchronously in the first protocol-14 block, with no enforced resource bound or staged progress.

(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/4652#discussion_r3989209403)
The protocol-14 activation path still runs `migrate_document_history_storage` synchronously whenever `previous_protocol_version < 14`, and it must complete before the activation block can proceed. The migration scans all eligible contracts, document types, documents, retained revisions, and index references, while building inventories and applying the rewrite in the shared transaction; `stats` is only logged and does not enforce a limit on work, bytes, memory, or execution time. Permissionless pre-activation state growth can therefore make the migration exceed validator proposal or memory budgets. If activation fails, the transaction rolls back and the same unbounded work is retried, potentially preventing protocol activation. Bound the migration with a deterministic consensus-safe budget, stage it across protocol-14 blocks with authenticated progress, or enforce and validate a pre-activation inventory limit against supported validator hardware.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The protocol-15 storage generations and prior SDK/proof fixes are present, but three blockers remain: unbounded activation migration, incompatible replacement of the released v0 history wire format, and shared layout selection that violates the dedicated versioned-helper rule. Current code checks, including the main integration suite and both browser suites, have passed; only PR Hygiene remains pending. This verification was static; no local builds or tests were run.

🔴 Blocking: Bound or stage the attacker-inflatable activation migration
packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/platform_events/protocol_upgrade/perform_events_on_first_block_of_protocol_change/v3/mod.rs:29-32
This activation hook processes the live inventory synchronously before ordinary block execution. Contract pagination does not bound its working set: history_migration_index_entries accumulates every index reference for a document type, history_migration_entries performs unlimited reads, and each document's revision payloads are cloned into pending copy operations and the statistics inventory. Funded owners can grow keep-history state through valid protocol-14 transactions across blocks, turning incrementally accepted storage into a single activation-time allocation spike. The measured 595-document checkpoint establishes feasibility for that snapshot, but neither activation nor admission freezes or caps the inventory at that size; the buffer statistic is calculated after allocation rather than enforced. Validator memory exhaustion cannot be repaired by a longer consensus round or transactional rollback, because restart encounters the same committed inventory. Stage the migration with bounded, resumable work and batches, or establish an enforceable pre-activation inventory bound whose worst case fits validator resources; merely rejecting an oversized inventory at activation would still prevent the upgrade.

🔴 Blocking: Give the incompatible history messages a new wire version
packages/dapi-grpc/protos/platform/v0/platform.proto:2489-2494
The released V0 request uses field 5 for an offset wrapper and field 7 for prove; this replacement uses those same numbers for a boolean and a cursor message. The response likewise changes entry field 2 from document bytes to a revision integer. These are incompatible wire types, but both formats still advertise outer version 0, and the new handler accepts that version while protocol 14 is active. Consequently, an existing proved history request can fail decoding on an upgraded node before storage activation, and a new client cannot reliably query an older node. The documented breaking change and current lack of mainnet history do not provide a wire boundary for existing testnet contracts or rolling upgrades. Preserve the released V0 messages and pre-activation handling, introduce the replacement under a new oneof version tag, and select supported versions through the query bounds and SDK encoder. After activation, unsupported legacy requests can be rejected explicitly rather than decoded as a different schema.

🔴 Blocking: Select the history layout through a dedicated versioned table
packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/mod.rs:54-70
uses_current_document_history_layout interprets the primary-storage writer's generation as a shared layout capability. Its callers include derived-index reads, fee estimation, layout descriptions, and primary-key query lowering, so those behaviors are selected indirectly through another method's slot. The book's “Shared helpers get a versioned method, not a capability flag” rule requires behavior shared across generations to have its own table-selected method. The current tables agree, but advancing the writer for an unrelated change would also make these readers reject an otherwise unchanged layout, or require expanding this capability test outside their own version selection. Add a dedicated versioned layout/helper selection in rs-platform-version, preserve the legacy selection for shipped protocols, and select the new generation only through protocol 15's tables.

Add a dedicated versioned layout/helper selection in `rs-platform-version`, preserve the legacy selection for shipped protocols, and select the new generation only through protocol 15's tables.
Select shared history-layout behavior through the dedicated document_history_storage_layout slot instead of the primary-storage writer. Backfill document tables V1-V4 with legacy 0 (including inherited mock tables), and select retained history 1 in the PV15 table. Keep unsupported layout versions fail-closed through the existing named mismatch error. Use a document-method slot because primary_key_tree_type already selects stored shapes there; structure fields describe format bounds. Derived reads, estimates, layout descriptions and primary-key queries retain their shared dispatcher. The migration prerequisite now reads the same slot. Pin writer/layout agreement across every production protocol and both mocks, while synthetic versions demonstrate that layout reads are writer-independent. All selectable protocol versions keep identical behavior; no goldens change. Test would have caught this in CI: ✖ before the helper fix, both writer-only layout regressions failed; ✔ after it, both pass. ✖ before the migration guard fix, its three new layout regressions failed (6 existing passed); ✔ after it, all 9 migration tests pass.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The dedicated history-layout selector and protocol-15 implementation generations resolve the earlier storage-versioning concerns. Three blockers remain: incompatible reuse of the shipped wire version, an unbounded activation migration over permissionless state, and request-side validation that prevents a fresh SDK from discovering protocol 15 through revision or cursor history queries. This was a static review only; current CI shows NPM release validation passing, with Rust workspace tests and JS/Docker builds still pending, and the supplied base drift reports no merge conflicts.

🔴 Blocking: Give the incompatible history messages a new wire version
packages/dapi-grpc/protos/platform/v0/platform.proto:2489-2494
The shipped V0 request changes field 5 from a UInt32Value offset to a bool and field 7 from a bool to a Cursor message. An old proved request therefore supplies the wrong protobuf wire type for the new field 7, while a new proved request supplies the wrong wire type for the old field 5. These requests fail in the Rust protobuf decoder before the handler can examine storage or return an unsupported-version error. The response also changes entry field 2 from document bytes to a revision number. The absence of existing mainnet histories does not prevent these decoding failures, and the current handler serves the replacement shape at protocol 14 as well as 15. Preserve the shipped V0 schema and expose the replacement through additive V1 request/response messages with corresponding handler and SDK routing. Unsupported legacy operations after activation can then fail explicitly instead of reinterpreting incompatible bytes under the same version.

packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/platform_events/protocol_upgrade/perform_events_on_first_block_of_protocol_change/v3/mod.rs:29-32
This hook requires the complete history migration to finish in one activation-block transaction. Contract IDs are paginated, but the loop drains every page before returning. For each keep-history type, Drive retains the complete index-reference inventory in a BTreeMap, materializes the primary entries, and reads each document's full history using insert_all with no query limit; revision payloads are additionally cloned into migration collections and write batches. Protocol 14 accepts permissionless keep-history types and writes without a testnet-only restriction, so the inventory can grow after the measured checkpoint. The reported buffer statistics impose no limit and are calculated after allocation. The authentic-state timing demonstrates that the sampled inventory fits, not that the allowed activation inventory fits supported validator memory. Longer consensus rounds cannot repair an out-of-memory failure, and rollback or restart repeats the same mandatory work without committed progress. Stage the migration under deterministic bounded work with persisted progress and compatible intermediate reads, or enforce a pre-activation inventory bound and validate its worst-case validator resource budget.

🔴 Blocking: Do not gate the first history request on the SDK's seed version
packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/query.rs:331-339
construct_path_query performs layout-dependent validation before transport. An unpinned SDK starts at protocol 13 on mainnet/testnet/regtest or 14 on devnet, and those versions route Revision, StartAtRevision and StartAfter through legacy_read, which rejects them. Consequently, a fresh Rust SDK cannot make one of these history queries against an already activated protocol-15 server: Fetch::fetch_with_metadata_and_proof runs this encoder before executing the request, so the signed response that would select the newer verifier and ratchet the SDK version never arrives. Both DocumentHistory and DocumentHistoryProofInfo use this path. Replace request-side path construction with version-independent query validation, leaving active-layout rejection to the server and signed-version proof verification. Add a regression that performs a revision or cursor history fetch from an unpinned SDK without first refreshing its version or making an unrelated proved read.

🟡 Suggestion: Track composable offset and absence proofs in GroveDB
packages/rs-drive/src/verify/document/verify_document_history/mod.rs:26-36
The two-proof container works around a generic GroveDB composition limitation: both the pinned revision and current develop reject offsets in PathQuery::merge, and absence-proof verification rejects offset pagination and per-instance limits. The current Drive implementation correctly checks envelope versions, proof presence and matching roots, so this is not a verification defect. Under the project's upstream-ownership guidance, link a dashpay/grovedb issue or PR covering versioned branch-local count-offset pagination composed with exact-key absence queries. No such tracking link is present in the supplied discussion, and the upstream searches did not identify one covering this combination; a linked tracking item is sufficient to defer the upstream implementation.

- [BLOCKING] packages/dapi-grpc/protos/platform/v0/platform.proto:2489-2494: Give the incompatible history messages a new wire version

In `packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/query.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/query.rs:331-339: Do not gate the first history request on the SDK's seed version
construct_path_query performs layout-dependent validation before transport.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive/src/verify/document/verify_document_history/mod.rs:26-36: Track composable offset and absence proofs in GroveDB
Validate history request structure without lowering it through the SDK's seed storage layout. An unpinned SDK at protocol 13 or 14 can now send revision and cursor filters and authenticate its first protocol 15 response; the server and proof verifier retain layout-dependent rejection. Test would have caught this in CI: ✖ before fix (all 16 first-read cases fail with the legacy-layout filter error), ✔ after (the same 16 cases pass with real GroveDB proofs and Tenderdash signatures). Cover both history result types, revision and StartAfter filters, and all four network seeds without a prior proved read. Confirm both parser paths select the newer response table and reject forged signed metadata before ratcheting the stored version.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The protocol-15 history implementation still has two blocking issues: activation performs attacker-inflatable migration work synchronously without a consensus-visible bound, and incompatible history protobuf messages replace the shipped V0 wire shape in place. The revision selector has an off-by-one ceiling at 65535, and the custom two-proof workaround still needs upstream GroveDB tracking. CI checks were still queued or in progress at the supplied snapshot; this review was static.

🔴 Blocking: Bound or stage the attacker-inflatable activation migration
packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/platform_events/protocol_upgrade/perform_events_on_first_block_of_protocol_change/v3/mod.rs:29-32
The first protocol-15 activation block still invokes the complete history migration synchronously inside the activation transaction. Although contract IDs are paginated, migrate_document_history_storage performs unlimited reads of each type's primary entries, retained revisions, and index trees, while retaining complete per-type index inventories and materializing revision and rewrite batches. Permissionless protocol-14 writes can therefore increase CPU, transaction work, serialized bytes, and peak memory before activation. The checkpoint measurement in the PR describes one current snapshot but does not impose a protocol invariant or upper bound, and rollback or retry repeats the same work. Stage the migration with deterministic persisted progress and bounded work per block, or enforce a pre-activation resource limit whose worst case is proven to fit validator resources without leaving an oversized state unable to activate.

🔴 Blocking: Give the incompatible history messages a new wire version
packages/dapi-grpc/protos/platform/v0/platform.proto:2489-2494
The new history request reuses the published V0 message while changing field 5 from UInt32Value offset to bool prove and field 7 from bool prove to a Cursor; the response also changes the existing entry and result shape in the same V0 slot. These are incompatible protobuf wire meanings, so a v5.0 client and v5.1 node cannot reliably distinguish or decode each other's history requests during a rolling upgrade. The PR's deliberate-breaking-change documentation acknowledges the outage but does not provide a version boundary. Preserve the shipped V0 request and response definitions and put the replacement shape in a new versioned request/response branch, with matching handler, SDK, and generated-client selection.

🟡 Suggestion: Do not cap valid 64-bit document revisions at u16::MAX
packages/rs-drive/src/query/document_history_drive_query.rs:143-148
validate accepts a 64-bit revision selector but permits only 1 through 65535. The protocol-15 query lowers a one-based revision to the zero-based GroveDB offset with (revision - 1) as u16, so revision 65536 requires offset 65535, which is representable and supported by the underlying query. The current validation rejects that addressable boundary and reports an inaccurate maximum. At minimum, validate the representable offset domain through revision 65536 and cover the 65535, 65536, and 65537 boundaries; if the larger positional domain remains intentionally unsupported, document that protocol limitation explicitly.

🟡 Suggestion: Track composable offset and absence proofs in GroveDB
packages/rs-drive/src/verify/document/verify_document_history/mod.rs:26-36
The two-proof envelope is a sound current workaround: the metadata proof authenticates exact-key presence or absence, while the entries proof supports offset pagination, and the verifier requires both proofs to use the same root. However, the pinned GroveDB implementation still rejects offset-bearing inputs in PathQuery::merge, so this Platform-specific envelope compensates for a missing upstream query-composition capability. Link a dashpay/grovedb issue or pull request tracking authenticated composition of count-offset pagination with exact-key absence proofs, including generation and verification support, so this workaround does not become an untracked permanent protocol layer.

A revision filter reads revision n at the zero-based offset n - 1 of the document's history tree, and GroveDB offsets are u16, so the highest addressable revision is 65536. Validation stopped at 65535 and reported that as the maximum. The bound is now a named constant derived from the offset width, and the SDK and ABCI tests move their rejection cases to 65537. Test would have caught this in CI: ✖ before the fix, should_address_every_revision_whose_offset_fits_the_grovedb_offset failed with "history revision must be between one and 65535"; ✔ after it, the test passes (revisions 65535 and 65536 lower to offsets 65534 and 65535, 65537 is refused), with Drive history 123, ABCI document_history 6 and query_request_errors 17, SDK history_query_tests 5 green. Static verification at 90594f0 confirms two blockers: incompatible reuse of the history v0 wire format and attacker-growable migration allocations in the activation transaction. The dedicated layout selector, SDK discovery fix, released-generation separation, and proof checks address the corresponding earlier findings; two non-blocking follow-ups remain. Current CI reports the Rust workspace tests and both browser shards passing; no local builds or tests were run, and the supplied base-drift evidence reports no merge conflicts.

🔴 Blocking: Give the incompatible history messages a new wire version
packages/dapi-grpc/protos/platform/v0/platform.proto:2489-2494
The released and replacement schemas still use the same outer v0 discriminator, but request tag 5 changes from a length-delimited UInt32Value offset to a bool, and tag 7 changes from a bool to a Cursor message. A released proved request therefore reaches the new Rust decoder with an incompatible wire type; conversely, the new prove flag conflicts with the released offset field. This happens before the history handler, storage-layout selection, or signed protocol discovery can run, including when both binaries serve protocol 14. The response also repurposes entry tag 2 from document bytes to a revision integer. The breaking-change notice accurately describes the outage but does not make these encodings distinguishable during binary rollout. Preserve the released V0 field assignments and introduce a new request/response version, with matching query bounds, handler dispatch, and client selection. Legacy requests can be explicitly rejected after activation without reassigning their wire representation.

This hook requires the complete migration to finish in one activation transaction. Contract-ID pagination does not bound its expensive allocations: Drive retains an entire document type's index-reference inventory, materializes its primary-key range, and loads and clones each document's retained revisions into conversion batches. history_migration_entries uses an unlimited insert_all query, and maximum_type_index_buffer_bound is measured after collecting the inventory rather than enforced as an admission limit. Even contracts without history must be fetched and decoded during the global scan.
Permissionless owners can accumulate this state through valid, paid writes before protocol 15, concentrating it in one type or document across many normally bounded blocks. The checkpoint measurement establishes feasibility for that snapshot, not a resource ceiling on the activation input. An inventory that exhausts validator memory remains committed after rollback, so restarting or retrying repeats the same allocation before activation can succeed. Use deterministic bounded migration work with committed progress, or enforce a pre-activation inventory/resource limit and demonstrate its worst case on supported validator hardware. Rejecting oversized state only at activation would leave the same liveness failure.

🟡 Suggestion: Track composable offset and absence proofs in GroveDB
packages/rs-drive/src/verify/document/verify_document_history/mod.rs:26-36
The two-proof envelope is justified and correctly checked here: Drive verifies both inner GroveDB envelope versions, authenticates metadata absence, requires entries-proof presence to agree with metadata, and rejects different roots. Both the pinned GroveDB revision fc7028d83114 and the supplied default revision 2128ea18f9b1 reject offset-bearing inputs in PathQuery::merge; absence verification also rejects offsets and per-instance limits. Native composition therefore belongs in dashpay/grovedb rather than in the Platform bindings or SDK. Your latest disposition confirms that this capability is not tracked yet, and the upstream searches found no matching open composition issue or PR. Link a GroveDB tracker covering generation and verification of a branch-local count-offset query combined with exact-key authenticated-absence branches before deferring the follow-up. This does not require removing the verified envelope in this PR.

🟡 Suggestion: Marshal returned history entries before deserializing a cursor
packages/wasm-sdk/src/queries/document.rs:290-291
A returned DocumentHistoryEntry structurally satisfies the exported startAfter type, so callers can pass the last returned entry directly as the next cursor. Its timeMs and revision are wasm-bindgen prototype getters, however. deserialize_required_query calls from_object, which first deserializes the whole query into platform_value::Value; the pinned serde-wasm-bindgen deserialize_any/map path uses Object.entries and does not read those prototype getters. The cursor consequently contains no declared fields, or only the internal handle, and DocumentHistoryCursorInput rejects it. The JavaScript facade forwards the value unchanged, so both history methods reject this type-correct pagination call even though a manually constructed cursor literal works. Explicitly marshal the two declared cursor properties in the WASM adapter, or expose a reusable plain cursor object, and add a regression using an actual returned entry. Keep native range validation in Drive.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive/src/verify/document/verify_document_history/mod.rs:26-36: Track composable offset and absence proofs in GroveDB
In `packages/wasm-sdk/src/queries/document.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/wasm-sdk/src/queries/document.rs:290-291: Marshal returned history entries before deserializing a cursor
Preserve the original startAfter through a typed query accessor and borrow DocumentHistoryEntry through the shared branded wasm conversion gateway. Keep literal cursors on the strict serde path and native range validation unchanged, and declare both accepted cursor forms in TypeScript. Cover actual returned entries, repeated borrowing, exact bigints, literal cursors, pointer and constructor impostors, freed wrappers, and forwarding through both documents facade methods. Test would have caught this in CI: ✖ before fix (7 passed, 2 failed), ✔ after fix (9 passed). The real-entry failures rejected __wbg_ptr instead of using the returned entry as the next page cursor.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the combined reviewer claims and all 18 prior findings against d3a1182; the cursor conversion, dedicated layout dispatch, SDK discovery, and earlier verification fixes are present. Two blockers remain: activation materializes attacker-expandable history inventories without resource bounds, and the replacement history API incompatibly reuses the released v0 wire schema; the GroveDB composition follow-up remains an untracked suggestion. This was static review only: current CI has Rust workspace tests pending, with the main platform suite, both browser suites, and relevant JS package checks passing; the supplied base-drift evidence reports no merge conflicts.

🔴 Blocking: Bound or stage the attacker-inflatable activation migration
packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/platform_events/protocol_upgrade/perform_events_on_first_block_of_protocol_change/v3/mod.rs:29-32
This mandatory activation call converts incrementally writable state into an unbounded in-memory workload. In migration/mod.rs, history_migration_entries executes SizedQuery::new(query, None, None) and materializes the result; the caller retains the complete type-wide index inventory and primary-entry vector, then holds a document's revision payloads in entries, copies, and revision_entries simultaneously. maximum_type_index_buffer_bound measures an allocation already made rather than enforcing a bound. Protocol-14 owners can continue adding valid keep-history documents and replacements before activation, so the measured checkpoint does not constrain these working sets. A sufficiently large inventory can exhaust validator RAM; the shared activation transaction prevents partial commits but also leaves no committed progress for restart or retry. Stage bounded reads and operation buffers through consensus-persisted progress with compatible reads, or establish an enforced pre-activation inventory envelope demonstrated to fit validator resources. A cap that merely rejects the activation block would leave activation unable to complete.

🔴 Blocking: Give the incompatible history messages a new wire version
packages/dapi-grpc/protos/platform/v0/platform.proto:2489-2494
The released request uses field 5 for a length-delimited UInt32Value offset and field 7 for the boolean prove flag; this v0 uses field 5 for prove and field 7 for a Cursor message. Thus an ordinary released proved request reaches the new Rust decoder with the wrong wire type at field 7, while a new proved request has the wrong wire type at field 5 for the released decoder. These failures occur before query_document_history_v0, contract lookup, or signed-response protocol discovery. The current handler also supports time reads from the protocol-14 layout, so the outage occurs during binary rollout independently of storage activation. The documented compatibility decision acknowledges this regression but does not provide a transport discriminator. Preserve the released v0 request/response definitions and introduce the replacement shape under a new wire version, retaining legacy handling before activation and an explicit version-aware rejection afterward where necessary.

Restore the published offset/prove fields and date/value response entries, and add the composite history shape as version one. Register both response versions and regenerate clients with the native dapi-grpc build. Test would have caught this in CI: ✖ before fix, ✔ after. Independent released-wire request and response bytes failed in both JS (0 passing, 2 failing) and Rust (0 passed, 2 failed); both passed after the schema fix. Final coverage is 49 JS tests and 3 Rust wire tests.
Restore the released handler and route it through unchanged legacy Drive readers, prover and verifier. Select a new query bounds table only at protocol 15: history v0 through 14, history v1 from 15. Test would have caught this in CI: ✖ before fix, ✔ after. The independent released-wire service regression and v0-at-15 rejection each failed before the fix, then passed in the 9-test history suite. Send history v1 without a v0 fallback, verify matching response versions, and preserve the node's InvalidArgument status on unsupported networks. Keep released v0 FromProof support for callers using that wire shape. The released-wire regressions were red before the split and green after the complete change. Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The current implementation preserves the released history wire format and isolates the new storage, query, and verification behavior behind protocol 15. One activation-resource blocker remains, together with an untracked GroveDB proof-composition follow-up; the broader revision-selector complaint is withdrawn because the checked, documented offset limit does not truncate retained history. Validation was static only: current CI has no failed code checks, both browser suites have passed, and Rust workspace tests remain pending.

Issue being fixed or feature implemented
Protocol 15 gives every history-keeping document a separate provable count tree. Composite timestamp/revision keys preserve multiple writes in one block, and current-document/index reads resolve through a primary pointer. The activation migration preserves retained legacy revisions, sums and beneficiary flags; previously overwritten legacy revisions cannot be recovered.
Protocol 14 ships with Platform v5.0. This branch targets
v5.1-dev, where protocol 15 is the unreleased activation version, and activates the new storage there next to the other protocol 15 changes. Protocol 14 keeps its released storage layout and every shipped method generation; the history-aware behaviour lives only in new generations selected by protocol 15.What was done?
DRIVE_VERSION_V10(thev5.1-devV9 plus document method table v5, contract method table v5 and verify method table v4) and Drive ABCI method table v11 (thev5.1-devchain-lock and DKG selections plus first-block hook v3). Every protocol ≤14 table is byte-identical tov5.1-dev, and every other protocol 15 selection onv5.1-devis kept.perform_events_on_first_block_of_protocol_changev3 runs the shipped v2 work first and then the history migration when crossing into 15, inside the block's transaction. Contract insert/update v3 wrap the shipped v2 operation collectors and add the history trees for keep-history types. The storage layout is chosen from the primary-storage writer generation (0 = released layout, 1 = history layout, anything else is an error), so no released table needed a new slot. The shipped leaf generations that protocol 14 already uses for other features (update_document_for_contract_operationsv1,remove_reference_for_index_level_for_contract_operationsv1) are untouched and forked into v2 for the history layout.oneof result { history | proof }shape, so a proved response carries only the proof and the verifier returns what it authenticates) through Drive, the API, Rust SDK, WASM and JavaScript SDK. Both GroveDB proofs inside the envelope require GroveDB v1 envelopes because only v1 hash-binds the terminal count-tree element; legacy envelopes are rejected as an unsupported proof version. Revision filters reject retained histories with gaps. The released version 0 request and response are unchanged and still served from the released layout up to protocol 14; protocol 15 selects query table v3, whose history bounds accept only version 1, so the standard version check refuses version 1 before activation and version 0 after it.startAtMsbound means the same on both layouts: the pre-15 reader takes an exclusive bound, so the query maps the filter onto it in one place shared by fetch, prove and verify.dapi-grpcclients from the protobuf; the generated changes are limited to the document history messages.integerRangebuckets, skipIfAbsent, derived values, accepted contested terminals), structural flags, sums/counts, proved API responses, proof-format validation and independent proof-info reverification.Migration acceptance on real state
The activation migration was run against an authentic testnet committed-state checkpoint (height 570745, root hash verified against the block app hash): 3,834 contracts, 51 keep-history document types, 595 documents, 644 retained revisions, 1,142 index references. Migration took about 1.7 s CPU and about 5 s wall on a laptop with about 250 MB peak RSS, against the 30 s Tenderdash propose timeout, and produced the same root on every run. What remains open is a measurement on validator-class hardware (2 vCPU) and a snapshot that contains ranked/time-range keep-history indexes; the benchmark harness is kept out of this PR.
How Has This Been Tested?
Validated locally on macOS with the repository Rust toolchain and protocol 15 selected for the new format:
cargo fmt --all --checkandcargo clippy --workspace --all-features -- -D warningspassed;cargo check -p wasm-sdk --target wasm32-unknown-unknownpassed.cargo test -p platform-version --test document_history_storage_versions: protocol 14 keeps the released storage and proof generations, protocol 15 activates migration and proofs together.cargo test -p drive --lib -- history drive::document::migrationand--test query_tests_history: the protocol 14 history query test reproduces the root hashes pinned onv5.1-dev, confirming the protocol 14 layout is unchanged; the migration matrix runs fresh protocol 15 and protocol 14 → 15 migrations, commits, reopens Drive and re-verifies current reads and proofs.cargo test -p drive-proof-verifierand the Rust SDK history, signed-version andproof_optionstests.cargo test -p drive-abci --lib -- document_history keep_history protocol_upgradeand--test query_request_errors: DAPI handler round-trips at 15, the protocol 14 handler serving the time filter while refusing revision and cursor filters, signed keep-history writes before and after migration, the legacy-contract repair across the boundary, a 13 -> 15 crossing through the public hook, and the hook not migrating on a 14 transition.cargo test -p drive-abci --test strategy_tests upgrade_fork_tests, includingrun_chain_v14_to_v15_migrates_document_history_and_survives_restart: protocol 14 inserts and signed replacements, lock-in, restart before activation, a rejected first candidate of the activation block followed by a successful retry, the exact migrated-plus-new revision count, post-activation insert/update under the protocol 14 contract with two revisions at one block time, cursor pagination, proofs, and restart after activation.Breaking Changes
The history query moves to wire version 1. The released version 0 shape is kept unchanged and served up to protocol 14, so 5.0 clients and 5.1 nodes interoperate during the upgrade; after protocol 15 activates, version 0 is refused with the unsupported-version error and clients must use version 1. The 5.1 SDKs send version 1 only, so their history reads need a protocol 15 network.
block_time_mspoint-in-time reads for keep-history types are rejected after activation.Protocol 15 also changes fee estimation for summable index references on every document type, not only keep-history ones: the estimated layer and value sizes now include the sum item.
