Reactivate identical abandoned transactions before committing
When a rejected send is retried and transaction creation produces the same txid (for example, a coin-controlled subtract-fee/no-change payment at the same tip), the first pass has left that wallet entry abandoned. This call invokes CommitTransaction(), whose AddToWallet(..., TxStateInactive{}) sees the existing abandoned TxStateInactive as the same variant and hits its fatal serialized-index assertion (-1 versus 0); without assertions it remains abandoned and cannot be relayed. Thus the retained-form retry can crash dash-qt or repeatedly fail; reactivate the abandoned state before recommitting and cover an actual identical retry.

Reproduced and fixed in c8e27b5. If the wallet already holds the transaction as abandoned, CWallet::CommitTransaction now un-abandons it before re-adding it, and the existing reconcile step marks its inputs spent again. A new TestGUI block sends one prepared transaction twice, refused and then accepted; without the wallet change it hits the AddToWallet assertion. (Develop already crashed the same way after a manual "Abandon transaction" followed by an identical resend.)

Distinguish conflicted transactions when abandonment fails
When a competing spend is confirmed after commitTransaction() returns a rejection but before the separate abandonTransaction() call acquires the wallet lock, blockConnected() marks this outgoing transaction TxStateConflicted. CWallet::AbandonTransaction() returns false for any nonzero depth, including a negative conflicted depth, so this condition falls through to the success path, emits coinsSent, and tells the user the payment was sent even though it can never enter the mempool. Only treat an abandonment failure as success after verifying this transaction is in the mempool/chain (or InstantSend-locked); keep a conflicted state as TransactionCommitFailed.

Treat InstantSend-locked commits as sent
When an unconfirmed transaction has an InstantSend lock but its wallet state is not in the mempool (for example, the lock notification wins the race after the failed commit), AbandonTransaction() refuses to abandon it, yet this helper returns false and sendCoins() reports TransactionCommitFailed, retaining a retry form for a quorum-locked payment and risking a second payment from other inputs. Fresh evidence in the current patch is that the new helper populates WalletTxStatus but ignores its is_islocked member; include that state among the successful outcomes after excluding conflicts.

Fixed in ae35e08. When abandoning fails, a transaction now counts as sent if it is in a block, or at depth 0 and either in the mempool or InstantSend-locked; a conflicted transaction never counts. No test: the GUI fixture can't inject an InstantSend lock.

Restore rejected inputs for avoid-reuse wallets
When WALLET_FLAG_AVOID_REUSE is enabled, a failed send has already passed through AddToWallet(), which persists every input address as previously spent at src/wallet/wallet.cpp:1061-1070. This abandonment restores the UTXO but never clears that marker, and GetBalance()/AvailableCoins() then exclude its IsSpentKey outputs (src/wallet/receive.cpp:175-181, src/wallet/spend.cpp:303-305). A rejection before relay can therefore remove the input—and all other coins on that address—from the GUI balance, so the retained form may fail for insufficient funds instead of being retryable; avoid or roll back the marker for this never-relayed path and cover the flag in the regression test.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Leaving this as is. Abandoning a refused send leaves the AVOID_REUSE "used" mark on its input addresses, but that is how abandoning already works in develop and upstream Bitcoin Core: abandontransaction keeps the mark too, because AddToWallet sets it and nothing rolls it back. avoid_reuse is opt-in, and clearing used-key state on abandon is a wallet-wide change that belongs in its own upstream-aligned PR, not in this GUI fix.

Recognize confirmations before abandoning the send
When the exact prepared transaction is mined through another path while the wallet's blockConnected() notification is still queued, BroadcastTransaction() already returns ALREADY_IN_CHAIN (src/node/transaction.cpp:49-56) but the wallet entry created by this call is still inactive. Converting that result into an error lets sendCoins() abandon the entry and report TransactionCommitFailed; the queued callback subsequently marks the payment confirmed even though the dialog retained a retry form and told the user it was not sent. Propagate or treat ALREADY_IN_CHAIN as success rather than relying only on lagging wallet state, to avoid prompting a duplicate payment.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 1af786b (and the identical CommitTransaction in #7763). The node interface collapses ALREADY_IN_CHAIN into a bare failure, so when a broadcast fails without a reason the wallet now checks the transaction's outputs with chain().findCoins(), the same check BroadcastTransaction uses; if any exist it returns success and nothing is abandoned. The GUI test now mines a prepared transaction before the wallet has processed the block, then sends it and expects OK; it fails without the fix.

The node explicitly supports submitting that instance as an in-place refresh. The fix must also account forAddToWallet()retaining the old transaction: bypassing this return alone would still broadcast the old instance. Apply commit metadata before returning for live transactions
When the exact transaction reaches the mempool or chain through another path and the wallet processes that notification before CommitTransaction(), this return bypasses the updater below that sets fFromMe, mapValue, and vOrderForm. The externally inserted entry therefore permanently loses WalletModel::sendCoins()'s BIP21 Message and CoinJoin DS marker, causing the transaction details to omit the message and CoinJoin sends to be categorized as ordinary sends; preserve the existing transaction state while still applying and writing the commit metadata.

Fixed in 71d657e (and the identical CommitTransaction in #7763). The commit metadata updater is now shared by both paths: when the wallet already holds the transaction as confirmed or in the mempool, it records fFromMe, mapValue and the order form, writes the entry and notifies, without changing the transaction's state. A new TestGUI case relays a transaction with a payment message through the node before the send and checks the message is on the wallet entry afterwards; it fails with the old early return.
🤖 Posted autonomously by Claude on behalf of pasta.
When the mempool refused a transaction on commit, CWallet::CommitTransaction only logged it and WalletModel::sendCoins could not tell. The send dialog then announced the payment as sent and cleared the form, and the refused transaction stayed in the wallet as a pending debit that was never relayed; the wallet kept rebroadcasting it. The smallest wallet change is needed, because develop's CommitTransaction returns nothing: it now returns util::Result<void>, an error carrying the mempool's reason (or a generic one when the refusal has none, as for the -maxtxfee check in BroadcastTransaction), and interfaces::Wallet::commitTransaction passes it on. The transaction stays committed to the wallet either way. With -walletbroadcast=0 nothing is offered to the mempool and the commit succeeds, as before. The other callers (RPC, CoinJoin, governance) ignore the result and behave as before. Because a refused send is now abandoned and the form kept, a retry can rebuild the identical transaction (same coins, no change, same tip). CommitTransaction handed it to AddToWallet() as inactive while the wallet held it abandoned, which fails AddToWallet()'s state assertion and aborts dash-qt; the same happens on develop after a manual abandon and an identical resend. Committing a transaction the wallet holds abandoned now first takes it back as not abandoned and spends its inputs again with ReconcileWalletUTXOs(), the transition develop already makes when an abandoned transaction re-enters the mempool. Committing a transaction the wallet already holds as confirmed or in the mempool now returns success without touching its state, and still records the commit's metadata on it (fFromMe, the order form's payment message, the CoinJoin marker), which it lacks if the wallet first saw it relayed or mined through another path: handing AddToWallet() an inactive state would undo the confirmation, the broadcast would then be refused as already known, and the caller would abandon it and release its spent inputs. Likewise, a transaction the broadcast refuses because it is already in the chain (mined through another path before the wallet processed the block; BroadcastTransaction's ALREADY_IN_CHAIN, which reaches the wallet without a reason) is reported as committed, so the GUI neither abandons it nor tells the user it was not sent. sendCoins returns a SendCoinsReturn, and on a refusal it now abandons the transaction and returns the new TransactionCommitFailed code with the reason. The send dialog shows it as an error, emits no coinsSent and keeps the form, so the user can retry. If the refused transaction cannot be abandoned, the wallet's own state decides: in the mempool or a block, or InstantSend-locked (AbandonTransaction refuses those too), it went out and is reported as sent; otherwise (a spend of the same inputs confirmed in between, so it is conflicted) it is reported as not sent, with the mempool's reason. Behaviour change, deliberately: the GUI abandons a refused send whatever the reason, including transient ones such as a mempool minimum fee or a missing parent. BroadcastTransaction relays only what the mempool accepted, so a refused transaction has reached no peer and abandoning it has no network effect. Keeping it instead would let the wallet's periodic resend broadcast a payment after the user was told it failed and may have sent it again, paying twice. A transient refusal is therefore not retried automatically; the kept form makes the retry one click. Test (test_dash-qt WalletTests, existing TestGUI scenario): a send whose broadcast is refused (the wallet's fee ceiling lowered after the transaction is prepared) shows an error, emits no coinsSent, is not in the mempool, leaves the balance where it was, because the abandoned transaction's coins are spendable again, and keeps the amount in the form. A refused send retried with the identical transaction is committed and reaches the mempool (without the wallet change this aborts on AddToWallet()'s assertion); committed again after it is mined, it is reported as sent, stays confirmed and the balance does not change. A transaction mined before the wallet processed the block is reported as sent. A transaction relayed through another path and seen by the wallet first is reported as sent and keeps its payment message. A send conflicting with an earlier one over the same coin reports the mempool's txn-mempool-conflict reason. WalletTests runs on cocoa, xcb and windows; it is skipped on macOS's minimal platform. Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the supplied reviews against head 71d657e and the surrounding wallet, broadcast, GUI, and regression-test code; no actionable in-scope findings remain. Error propagation, rejection abandonment, identical retries, and preservation of confirmed/mempool transaction state match the PR's stated behavior. Validation was static only: the supplied CI snapshot shows successful primary builds and lint checks, while wallet-enabled tests and several sanitizer/multiprocess jobs were still pending.
