fix: let startup block replay handle quorum commitments and asset unlocks - #7869
Conversation
ReplayBlocks() runs before LoadChainTip(), so m_chain is still empty while RollforwardBlock() re-processes special transactions and quorum commitments. A block with a non-null quorum commitment then trips the IsMiningPhase() height assertion and aborts the node on every start, and asset-unlock and MNHF-signal transactions find no quorum in the empty chain, so replay fails and recovery needs -reindex-chainstate. Set the tip to each block's parent before rolling it forward, matching what ConnectBlock saw. Stopping at the parent leaves m_chain one block short of the coins tip, so LoadChainTip() still sets the tip and prunes the block index candidates added while the chain was empty. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
RollforwardBlock() inherits the process-wide BLS scheme flag, which still holds its legacy default during startup replay because VerifyLoadedChainstate() only sets it afterwards. The first replayed post-V19 block is therefore processed under the legacy scheme, and an asset unlock in it fails signature verification, so replay fails. Establish the scheme per block as ConnectBlock does. The guard is not committed: each replayed block sets its own scheme, and the scheme for the loaded tip is set after loading. WalkthroughBlock replay now sets the chain tip to each block’s parent before processing it. It selects the BLS scheme based on V19 activation at that block. A functional test triggers database crashes during flushes and checks replay of quorum commitment and asset-unlock blocks. It verifies the recovered tip and the serialized UTXO-set hash. Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Static verification at head 87e9eee confirms the supplied reviewers' conclusions: the parent-tip replay view matches ConnectBlock's context, preserves LoadChainTip candidate pruning, and the scoped BLS guard establishes the correct scheme for each replayed block. The new functional test checks offline recovery to the expected tip, quorum availability, and matching UTXO state; no actionable in-scope findings were identified. No builds or tests were run locally; the supplied CI snapshot shows successful builds, lint, and standard, SQLite, and no-wallet test jobs, with multiprocess, TSan, and ASan tests still pending.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
At head f1e52a8, the replay changes match ConnectBlock's chain-view and BLS-scheme handling while preserving LoadChainTip's candidate pruning; static review identified no production-code defect. The regression scenario covers commitment-and-unlock recovery but does not independently protect the BLS fix. No builds or tests were run in this static lane; the supplied CI snapshot shows lint and formatting passing, with source builds still queued.

In `test/functional/feature_asset_locks.py`:
- [SUGGESTION] test/functional/feature_asset_locks.py:1452-1456: Exercise an asset unlock in the first replayed block
Mining and maturing the quorum after the clean restart puts multiple post-V19 blocks ahead of the unlock in the replay range. If the new RollforwardBlock() BLS guard is removed while the chain-tip fix remains, ProcessSpecialTxsInBlock() switches the global flag to basic at the end of an earlier successfully replayed block, so the unlock is still checked under the correct scheme. This scenario therefore does not independently protect the BLS fix. Retain the commitment-replay scenario and add a second crash cycle with an already mature quorum and a clean flush immediately before the unlock block, making the unlock the first block rolled forward. Removing only the BLS guard is the targeted mutation check for that additional scenario.
… crash Add test_replay_after_crash to feature_asset_locks.py, which already has the platform quorum, evo masternodes and asset unlock helpers it needs. With -dbcrashratio=1 -dbbatchsize=1 it mines a quorum commitment and then an asset unlock without flushing, forces a flush that crashes the node, and restarts it without peers. Startup must roll both blocks forward and leave the same UTXO set hash as a node that never crashed. The commitment block is replayed before the asset unlock block, so without the ReplayBlocks() fix the restart fails on the IsMiningPhase() assertion. A second cycle starts from a clean flush with the quorum already mature and mines only an asset unlock, so the unlock is the first block rolled forward. No earlier replayed block resets the BLS scheme, so without the RollforwardBlock() scheme guard the restart fails with bad-assetunlock-not-verified. Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Independently reviewed the complete diff at 74dc3e5 and verified the supplied reviewer conclusions against the replay, startup, quorum-processing, BLS, and functional-test paths; no actionable in-scope defects were found. The second crash cycle addresses the prior coverage finding by cleanly flushing the mature quorum before mining the sole asset-unlock block. Validation was static only: no builds or tests were run, and the supplied CI snapshot still showed build checks queued and lint in progress.

Issue being fixed or feature implemented
When a node stops in the middle of a coins-database flush (crash, power loss, OOM kill), the next start rolls the unflushed blocks forward in
ReplayBlocks(). That runs insideLoadChainstate()beforeLoadChainTip(), so the chain is still empty whileRollforwardBlock()re-processes each block's special transactions and quorum commitments. Several of those checks read the chain, and two things go wrong on a chain with quorums:IsMiningPhase()assertsnHeight <= active_chain.Height() + 1, and the chain height is -1. The existing "skip when replaying" branches inCQuorumBlockProcessordo not cover that assertion, so the node crashes again on every start until-reindex-chainstate.bad-assetunlock-too-old-quorum) and startup fails with "Unable to replay blocks. You will need to rebuild the database using -reindex-chainstate."Separately,
RollforwardBlock()processes blocks under whatever BLS scheme the process-wide flag holds. At that point in startup it holds the legacy default, becauseVerifyLoadedChainstate()only sets it later. So the first replayed post-V19 block runs under the legacy scheme, and an asset unlock in that block fails signature verification (bad-assetunlock-not-verified) even with a chain in place.ConnectBlock()already sets the scheme for each block withScopedBLSLegacyScheme. The replay path never got that guard. The replay range covers every block since the previous coins flush, often hours of blocks. Mainnet mines a non-null quorum commitment roughly every half hour, so in practice this recovery always fails on mainnet and needs a full
-reindex-chainstate. That costs masternodes hours offline. What was done?
ReplayBlocks()sets the chain tip to the parent of each block before rolling it forward. Each replayed block then sees the same chain viewConnectBlock()saw when the block was first connected. The tip is moved to the parent before each block, not to the block after it, so the chain ends one block short of the new coins tip.LoadChainTip()then still runs its full path: it sets the tip and prunes the block-index candidates thatLoadBlockIndex()added while the chain was empty.RollforwardBlock()establishes the block's BLS scheme the same wayConnectBlock()does. The guard is not committed: every replayed block sets its own scheme on entry, andVerifyLoadedChainstate()sets the scheme for the loaded tip afterwards. Both changes only affect local crash recovery of blocks this node already fully validated. Block validation rules, serialization and the P2P protocol are unchanged.
The CbTx best-ChainLock check is not involved: replay passes
fCheckCbTxMerkleRoots=false, so the coinbase payload checks are skipped there. The
chainstate.m_chain.Tip() == nullptr"skip when replaying" branches inCQuorumBlockProcessorare no longer reached during replay, because replay now runs with the same chain view asConnectBlock(). They are left in place to keep this change small and can be removed in a follow-up.How Has This Been Tested?
New step
test_replay_after_crashat the end offeature_asset_locks.py, which already has the platform quorum, evo masternodes and asset unlock helpers. It crashes the regular node mid-flush twice and checks the replay each time. Each cycle restarts the node with-dbcrashratio=1 -dbbatchsize=1, mines without flushing, and forces a flush (gettxoutsetinfo) that crashes the node after its first partial batch. The node is then restarted without peers and must logRolling forwardfor every expected block, come back at the same tip, and have the same UTXO set hash as the other node.RollforwardBlock()scheme guard. After the second cycle the node is restarted normally and reconnected, so the step leaves the file as it found it.
Results (macOS arm64,

The commitment block is replayed before the asset unlock block, so the test reaches that crash first.IsMiningPhase()assertion.RollforwardBlock(DASH): ProcessSpecialTxsInBlock for block ... failed with bad-assetunlock-not-verified.Also ran
