This is an upstream issue where the same test failed with the same error on s390x, but with a different stack trace:
https://bugs.openjdk.org/browse/JDK-8332619

It's suggested that this can be worked-around by simply increasing the stack size.

Also, note that the stack trace referenced in JDK-8332619 is different from the one we're seeing, but it does reference Gen.java, which was adapted to solve a similar problem 4 years ago: https://bugs.openjdk.org/browse/JDK-8322992

8322992 was also the bug covering the work to re-engineer the SOEDeeplyNestedBlocksTest that we use today.

I'll be updating JDK-8332619 to cover the more recent failures.
