Summary

Companion hardening PR to the gRPC authentication fix (#2263). Adds boundary validation for the client-controlled fields of ChatRequest so a malformed request cannot reach the agent loop.

Related finding: Unauthenticated plaintext gRPC AgentService allows remote tool execution and self-approval (CRITICAL · CVSS 4.0 9.3 · CWE-306)
Scan ID: cmv17pjbb00wzmo01sj0gfzlm

Why

ChatRequest carries client-controlled message, working_directory, and session_id. The handler used working_directory as the agent's cwd and session_id as a global session-store key with no bounds:

  • session_id was read verbatim (req.session_id || '') and used to read/write the shared sessions map.
  • working_directory and message were passed through unchecked.

Constraining these at the boundary reduces the attack surface for resource exhaustion and session-namespace probing, and makes invalid input fail fast with a clear error.

What this changes

  • New src/grpc/validation.ts:
    • message: required, non-empty, ≤ 100,000 chars, no null byte.
    • working_directory: optional, ≤ 4096 chars, no null byte.
    • session_id: optional, ≤ 128 chars, restricted to [A-Za-z0-9_.:-].
    • model: optional string.
  • handleChat validates each ChatRequest and returns an INVALID_ARGUMENT error frame instead of starting the agent loop on malformed input.
  • New src/grpc/validation.test.ts covers the accept/reject cases.

Notes

No behavior change for valid requests. This is independent of the auth fix and can land before or after it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid chat requests are now rejected with a clear error before they can be submitted.
    • Chat messages, working directories, and session IDs are checked for valid content and length.
    • Valid requests use normalized values, with empty optional fields omitted.

The gRPC AgentService used client-controlled 'working_directory' as the agent
cwd and 'session_id' as a global session-store key with no validation or bounds.

- Add src/grpc/validation.ts validating message (required, bounded, no null
bytes), working_directory (bounded), and session_id (bounded, safe charset).
- handleChat validates each ChatRequest and returns INVALID_ARGUMENT instead of
starting the agent loop on malformed input.
- Add unit tests in src/grpc/validation.test.ts.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The gRPC chat handler now validates incoming request fields before query submission. The validator enforces message, working-directory, and session-ID constraints, then returns normalized fields. Tests cover valid requests, optional-field normalization, and invalid inputs.

Changes

gRPC Chat Request Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request validation and tests
src/grpc/validation.ts, src/grpc/validation.test.ts
validateChatRequest checks required message content and optional working-directory, session-ID, and model fields. Tests cover valid and invalid requests and optional-field normalization.
Handler integration
src/grpc/server.ts
handleChat returns INVALID_ARGUMENT for invalid requests. For valid requests, it uses the validated session ID, working directory, model, and message when creating and submitting the query.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7e224

Clients need the new field limits and rejection response documented. Add that guidance before merging; a handler-level rejection test would also strengthen regression coverage.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7e224

This is a bounded hardening change that rejects malformed input without expanding execution authority. It does not replace authentication or session isolation. Deployment protections and compatibility with existing clients remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller able to reach Chat and submit an accepted request still reaches the existing agent flow, client-selected working directory, tool-permission exchange and instance-wide session namespace. The PR restricts malformed inputs rather than increasing that reach. Network exposure and concrete downstream asset privileges remain unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new control checks field shape and size before session access and execution. It does not authenticate a caller, authorize a session ID, or constrain a valid working-directory string to an approved workspace. Those existing trust boundaries are not replaced by this validation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Concurrent streams using the same accepted session ID retain the existing unsynchronized read-and-replace behavior, allowing later completions to replace earlier saved history. Validation neither resolves nor expands this pre-existing shared-state race.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Treat authenticated transport, identity-bound session access and workspace authorization as separate controls when deploying beyond a trusted local environment; do not rely on input validation as evidence that those controls are present.

Document the new ChatRequest rejection rules.

GrpcServer.handleChat now returns INVALID_ARGUMENT for invalid client fields. Document the field limits and rejection response in the gRPC API guidance so clients can construct valid requests.

Add a stream-level rejection test.

The existing tests cover validateChatRequest directly and valid handler behavior. Add a focused handleChat test that sends malformed input, asserts the INVALID_ARGUMENT error frame, and verifies that QueryEngine.submitMessage is not called.
