Closes #2260

Summary

Add AnySearch as an explicit, opt-in web search backend for OpenClaude.

What changed

  • add an AnySearch provider backed by POST /v1/search
  • support /search anysearch and WEB_SEARCH_PROVIDER=anysearch
  • allow anonymous requests when ANYSEARCH_API_KEY is unset and use Bearer authentication only when configured
  • support ANYSEARCH_MAX_RESULTS from 1 to 10
  • keep AnySearch out of the automatic provider fallback chain
  • add provider configuration docs and focused tests
  • preserve a sanitized, truncated snippet from non-JSON HTTP error responses

Scope boundaries

This PR intentionally covers the basic provider adapter only. It does not add AnySearch vertical capability discovery, provider-specific batch tools, or URL extraction. Existing WebFetch behavior remains responsible for URL extraction, redirects, and permissions.

Testing

  • bun test ./src/tools/WebSearchTool/providers/anysearch.test.ts — 7 passed
  • bun run typecheck — passed
  • bun run typecheck:type-tests — passed
  • bun run build — passed
  • node bin/openclaude --version — passed
  • npm run test:provider-recommendation — 165 passed
  • bun run security:pr-scan -- --base upstream/main --head HEAD — passed
  • anonymous AnySearch request path — passed
  • git diff --check — passed

bun run check was attempted, but unrelated bughunter tests in src/commands.test.ts timed out or produced empty git context in this environment; no files in that surface changed. bun run test:provider also did not complete in this environment after existing API tests. The focused AnySearch suite above passed completely.

Notes

  • AnySearch remains explicit-only and does not alter existing automatic provider behavior.
  • No API key is required for the basic path.
  • Allow edits by maintainers is enabled.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added AnySearch as an explicitly selectable web search provider. It works without an API key, with optional authentication for higher service limits.
    • Added configuration for the maximum number of results, from 1 to 10 (default: 10).
    • Searches using AnySearch report errors rather than retrying through another provider.
  • Documentation
    • Documented AnySearch setup, key management, result limits, and how it behaves alongside automatic search providers.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds AnySearch as an explicitly selected web search backend. It supports anonymous requests, optional Bearer authentication, and a configurable result limit. AnySearch remains outside the automatic provider chain.

Changes

Explicit AnySearch backend

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider request handling and routing
src/tools/WebSearchTool/providers/anysearch.ts, src/tools/WebSearchTool/providers/index.ts, src/tools/WebSearchTool/providers/*.test.ts, src/tools/WebSearchTool/README_SEARCH_PROVIDERS.md
Adds an explicit AnySearch provider that posts the query and result limit, optionally sends a Bearer token, validates and maps results, applies domain filters, and reports errors. The registry keeps it out of automatic selection. Tests cover requests, responses, errors, and routing.
Search settings and command selection
src/commands/search/searchSettings.ts, src/commands/search/search.test.tsx, src/commands/search/searchSettings.test.ts, README.md, docs/advanced-setup.md
Adds AnySearch selection and optional key management to search settings and commands. Tests cover keyless selection and searches. The documentation describes configuration and result limits.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to efa5b

AnySearch is opt-in and preserves existing search permissions and cancellation controls. Risk is low, but downgrading while retaining its saved selection can silently restore automatic routing to other search providers.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new selection can persist WEB_SEARCH_PROVIDER=anysearch, but the comparison-base version treats that value as unknown and resolves it to auto. Downgrading without resetting the selection can therefore send subsequent searches through other configured providers instead of preserving AnySearch-only routing or failing closed. This requires a downgrade with retained configuration; normal execution at the reviewed head remains explicit-only.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected adapter exposes the selected search query and optional provider credential to AnySearch, and accepts provider-controlled result text and URLs. It does not itself expose arbitrary local files, other provider credentials, or active fetching of result URLs. The rollback concern affects subsequent searches in instances retaining the new selection, not credential forwarding to fallback providers.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported recovery-path concern requires an operator to downgrade while retaining WEB_SEARCH_PROVIDER=anysearch. Unknown-mode handling then selects auto, enabling a different query destination on later searches. Provider-controlled results alone do not trigger this transition, and no such downgrade was observed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing WebSearchTool permission and abort-signal path remains above the adapter. Search results are formatted as data; URL fetching remains a separate WebFetch operation with its own permission handling. AnySearch uses the shared domain-filter behavior, including its pre-existing handling of unparseable URLs.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Request headers and credentials are local to each invocation. The existing timeout wrapper covers fetching and response-body reading, preserves caller cancellation, and cleans up abort listeners and timers on terminal paths. Explicit-mode errors stop instead of disclosing the query through another provider.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define downgrade behavior for persisted provider modes. A rollback procedure should explicitly restore a supported, approved destination before restarting an older version; future unknown-mode handling could fail closed rather than silently choose auto.

provider’s `withWebSearchTimeout` callback to preserve non-JSON error text: read
the response text, then parse it with `JSON.parse` in a try/catch. When parsing
fails, include a sanitized, truncated snippet in the HTTP error message without
exposing request headers or the key; keep the existing status, authentication
hint, and `request_id` behavior.
