feat: preview files and folders inside archives - #2046
When Explorer shows an archive as a folder (zip, and on newer Windows 7z/rar...), the selection arrives as C:\dir\file.zip\inner\name.txt, which no plugin can read.
ArchiveEntryHelper copies the entry out through the shell to a temporary file and ViewWindowManager previews that copy; _invokedPath keeps the original path so toggling still closes the preview. Copies from earlier previews are removed (files still open are kept).
A folder inside an archive (C:\dir\file.zip\docs) is shown by the archive viewer, listing that folder straight from the archive.
In the archive viewer, double-clicking a file in the list extracts it to a temporary folder and previews it in QuickLook.
Related Issue (if any)
None.
Additional Notes
Builds cleanly against current master (MSBuild, Release, main app and ArchiveViewer). No automated tests.
The new status labels in the archive panel ("Extracting ..." and "Folder not found in the archive") are plain strings, like the existing "Preview failed" one next to them, so no translation entries were added.
Touches the same lines of ViewWindowManager.ShowNewWindow as the "stop the previous preview before matching the new path" PR of this series, so whichever is merged second needs a trivial conflict resolution.
Includes KeyboardLog.cs (identical to the copy in the other PRs of this series) because slow extractions are logged there.

ArchiveEntryHelper traverses Windows Shell archive paths, extracts file entries to a cache, and checks whether a path identifies a folder.
Route archive paths to previews QuickLook/ViewWindowManager.cs, QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.ArchiveViewer/Plugin.cs
ViewWindowManager uses an extracted path for plugin matching and reloads, or selects ArchiveViewer for archive folders. Plugin.View routes paths that do not identify existing files to ArchiveInfoPanel.
Display archive folders and preview entries QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.ArchiveViewer/ArchiveFile/ArchiveFileEntry.cs, QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.ArchiveViewer/ArchiveFile/ArchiveFileListView.xaml.cs, QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.ArchiveViewer/ArchiveFile/ArchiveInfoPanel.xaml.cs, QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.ArchiveViewer/ArchiveFile/Extensions.cs
ArchiveInfoPanel displays a selected archive subtree and scopes its counts to that subtree. A double-click on a non-folder entry raises PreviewRequested; the panel extracts eligible entries and invokes preview when extraction succeeds.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 470a0
Archive previews generally remain usable, but some nested entries and reloads behave incorrectly, large extractions can freeze the window, and temporary copies can remain after exit. Address these paths or accept the bounded risk before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 470a0
The new archive preview can lose Internet-origin protection and has no extraction-size limit. A malicious archive could avoid an existing warning or fill local storage when a user previews its contents. The demonstrated exposure is user-initiated and local; code execution or increased privileges were not established.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: Both new extraction paths replace archive provenance with an ordinary temporary-file path without transferring Internet-zone metadata. When OfficeViewer handles the extracted document, its existing Zone.Identifier check evaluates that new file rather than the source archive. This can bypass the warning and consent boundary for Internet-origin documents. Handler eligibility limits reachability, and independent native-handler protections were not established.
Medium · security · inferred: A selected archive entry can produce unlimited temporary output: both new copy loops run until EOF without an output-size quota. ArchiveViewer uses declared size only for progress, while Shell extraction happens synchronously before extension filtering. A crafted high-expansion entry can exhaust the temporary volume and block preview processing. Failure or cancellation can leave partial files, with cleanup deferred to a later extraction rather than guaranteed at the failed operation's terminal state.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — An attacker who supplies an archive can influence content extracted when the user previews an inner entry or double-clicks a listed file. The demonstrated reach is the local temporary volume and eligible installed preview handlers, including OfficeViewer where its handler checks succeed. No new service identity, administrative privilege, or cross-tenant access was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The origin-protection attack path is an Internet-marked archive containing a supported document, followed by user-initiated extraction and preview of the unmarked temporary copy. OfficeViewer checks that copy's zone and can proceed without its Internet-origin consent prompt. This is newly reachable through the added extraction paths; the OfficeViewer check itself predates the PR. Actual native-handler exploitation is not established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Ordinary archive-key traversal is constrained: the Shell path resolves enumerated children, and both extraction implementations use a basename for the destination rather than combining the full archive key with the temporary root. ArchiveViewer also rejects encrypted or keyless selections. These controls do not preserve origin metadata or limit output volume.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Extraction lacks a bounded failure-containment lifecycle. Shell copying has no cancellation or byte limit; ArchiveViewer cancellation stops future writes but leaves partial output. Cleanup runs before a later extraction and has no cross-panel ownership tracking, so it neither guarantees prompt reclamation after failure nor retention of every live preview whose file handle has closed.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Preserve source Internet-zone provenance through both extraction paths and ensure origin protection is applied before preview publication. Do not treat an unmarked temporary path as evidence that the source archive was trusted.
proposed — Use a shared extraction lifecycle with enforced output-byte and aggregate-storage limits, cancellable work off the UI thread, private partial output, and publication only after successful completion. Reclaim failed output and track preview ownership explicitly instead of relying on deletion failures.

`SFGAO` bitfield values represent attributes that can be retrieved on an item (file or folder) or set of items. They are used with the IShellFolder and IShellItem APIs, most notably IShellFolder::GetAttributesOf and IShellItem::GetAttributes.
Constant/value | Description
--- | ---
SFGAO_CANCOPY
0x00000001
| The specified items can be copied.
SFGAO_CANMOVE
0x00000002
| The specified items can be moved.
SFGAO_CANLINK
0x00000004
| Shortcuts can be created for the specified items. This attribute has the same value as DROPEFFECT_LINK.
If a namespace extension returns this attribute, a Create Shortcut entry with a default handler is added to the shortcut menu that is displayed during drag-and-drop operations. The extension can also implement its own handler for the link verb in place of the default. If the extension does so, it is responsible for creating the shortcut.
A Create Shortcut item is also added to the Windows Explorer File menu and to normal shortcut menus.
If the item is selected, your application's IContextMenu::InvokeCommand method is invoked with the lpVerb member of the CMINVOKECOMMANDINFO structure set to link. Your application is responsible for creating the link.
SFGAO_STORAGE
0x00000008
| The specified items can be bound to an IStorage object through IShellFolder::BindToObject. For more information about namespace manipulation capabilities, see IStorage.
SFGAO_CANRENAME
0x00000010
| The specified items can be renamed. Note that this value is essentially a suggestion; not all namespace clients allow items to be renamed. However, those that do must have this attribute set.
SFGAO_CANDELETE

<title>Getting Information About the Contents of a Folder - Win32 apps | Microsoft Learn</title>

<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Published: 5.8 years ago; Crawled: 5 months ago; 2. ... Other IShellFolder methods and other Shell folder interfaces are discussed later. ... You can determine whether your folder contains any subfolders by calling IShellFolder::GetAttributesOf and checking to see if the SFGAO_FOLDER flag is set.
## Enumerating the Contents of a Folder
The first thing you usually want to do with a folder is to find out what it contains. You must first call the folder's IShellFolder::EnumObjects method. The folder will create a standard OLE enumeration object and return its IEnumIDList interface. This interface exposes four standard methods—Clone, Next, Reset, and Skip—that can be used to enumerate the contents of the folder.
The basic procedure for enumerating a folder's contents is:
1. Call the folders IShellFolder::EnumObjects method to retrieve a pointer to an enumeration object's IEnumIDList interface.
2. Pass an unallocated PIDL to IEnumIDList::Next. Next takes care of allocating the PIDL, but the application must deallocate it when it is no longer needed. When Next returns, the PIDL will contain just the object's item ID and the terminating NULL characters. In other words, it is a single-level PIDL, relative to the folder, not a fully qualified PIDL.
## Getting a Pointer to a Subfolder's IShellFolder Interface
You can determine whether your folder contains any subfolders by calling IShellFolder::GetAttributesOf and checking to see if the SFGAO_FOLDER flag is set. If an object is a folder, you can bind to it, which provides you with a pointer to its IShellFolder interface.
To bind to a subfolder, call the parent folder's IShellFolder::BindToObject method. This method takes the subfolder's PIDL and returns a pointer to its IShellFolder interface. Once you have this pointer, you can use the IShellFolder methods to enumerate the subfolders contents, determine their properties, and so on.
## Determining an Object's Parent Folder
If you have an object's PIDL, you may need a handle to one of the interfaces exposed by its parent folder. For example, if you want to determine the display name associated with a PIDL by using IShellFolder::GetDisplayNameOf, you must first retrieve the IShellFolder interface of the object's parent. </excerpt>

A zip file/folder would have SFGAO_STREAM/SFGAO_DROPTARGET along with SFGAO_FOLDER, so if you can read the shell item as stream, then it probably isn't a directory. Another way to tell is to use SHGetPathFromIDList+PathIsDirectory, however this only works for pidl that have file system paths.
There are other kind of browsable files too, like a saved search (and if you browse into the file it takes like forever to finish enumerating the items), so you probably want to think about how to deal with those files too.

2. The SHBrowseForFolder Dialog Box
3. Special Folders and CSIDLs
4. A Simple Example of How to Use CSIDLs and SHBrowseForFolder
Before you can make use of a namespace object, you need a way to identify it. This means obtaining either its pointer to an item identifier list (PIDL) or, in the case of file system objects, its path. This section discusses two of the simpler ways to obtain object IDs.
For a more powerful approach that will work with any folder, use the IShellFolder interface. See Getting Information About the Contents of a Folder for more details.
## The OpenFiles Dialog Box
To enable the user to navigate the namespace and select a folder, your application can use the IFileDialog interface. Calling this interface with the FOS_PICKFOLDERS flag launches the Open Files common dialog box in "pick folders" mode.
## Special Folders and CSIDLs
A number of commonly used folders are designated as special by the system. These folders have a well-defined purpose, and most of them are present on all systems. Even if they are not present initially, their names and locations are still defined, so they can be added later. The collection of special folders includes all of the system's standard virtual folders, such as Printers, My Documents, and Network Neighborhood. It also includes a number of standard file system folders, such as Program Files and System.
Even though the folders are a standard component of all systems, their names and locations in the namespace can vary. For example, the System directory is C:\Winnt\System32 on some systems and C:\Windows\System32 on others. In the past, environment variables provided a way to determine the name and location of a special folder on any particular system. The Shell now provides a more robust and flexible way to identify special folders, CSIDLs. You should generally use them instead of environment variables.

Include SFGAO_STREAM when classifying archive entries.
Windows can set both SFGAO_FOLDER and SFGAO_STREAM for compressed files. TryExtract currently rejects such an entry as a folder. IsArchiveFolder then routes it to the archive viewer, where FindEntryKey accepts only folder entries and can show “Folder not found in the archive”.
Request and test SFGAO_STREAM in both methods:

Add cleanup for both roots during startup or shutdown. Preserve files that are still in use.

Update App.OnExit or the startup flow to invoke both CleanupOldEntries and
CleanupPreviewFolders, ensuring extracted copies in both temporary roots are
removed when QuickLook exits or starts. Preserve each cleanup method’s behavior
of leaving files that are still in use.

Preserve archive-folder state for reload and plugin previews.
An archive-folder invocation stores the nonexistent inner-folder path in _previewPath. ReloadPreview then calls FindMatch, which selects the default InfoPanel instead of ArchiveViewer. The reload does not restore the archive-folder preview.
InvokePluginPreview also returns before plugin lookup because the inner-folder path is not an existing file or directory. Fixing only the reload lookup is not sufficient.

Track when the current preview represents an archive folder, since its
inner-folder path may not exist on disk. Update ReloadPreview to restore the
ArchiveViewer for that state, and update InvokePluginPreview to allow the
current archive-folder path through its existence check and preserve the
archive-folder preview behavior.

Reload re-displays the old archive-entry copy. Re-extract the entry, and close the viewer when re-extraction fails.
ReloadPreview reads _previewPath and never calls ArchiveEntryHelper.TryExtract(_invokedPath). The base revision reloaded from _invokedPath, so this PR introduced the regression. Two cases follow:
Archive changed: The temporary path includes the archive length and last-write ticks. A changed archive gives a new path, but reload keeps the old copy. In-window preview does not refresh it either, because InvokePreview returns early when the same path is already visible. Reload is the only refresh route.
Archive or entry removed:TryExtract returns null. A refresh that only assigns _previewPath when the result is non-null keeps displaying the old copy. The copy stays on disk because cleanup runs only inside a new TryExtract call and skips files that are still open.
For a file entry, a null result must not keep showing the old copy. Close the viewer, as CurrentPluginFailed already does. Keep the folder case unchanged. Ordinary files are excluded because TryExtract returns null for them too.

Update ReloadPreview to re-extract archive file entries from _invokedPath with
ArchiveEntryHelper.TryExtract and use the refreshed path for plugin matching and
display. Preserve ordinary-file and archive-folder behavior; if extraction of a
file entry fails, close _viewerWindow instead of continuing to show the stale
preview.

Brief Description of Changes
When Explorer shows an archive as a folder (zip, and on newer Windows 7z/rar...), the selection arrives as
C:\dir\file.zip\inner\name.txt, which no plugin can read.ArchiveEntryHelpercopies the entry out through the shell to a temporary file andViewWindowManagerpreviews that copy;_invokedPathkeeps the original path so toggling still closes the preview. Copies from earlier previews are removed (files still open are kept).C:\dir\file.zip\docs) is shown by the archive viewer, listing that folder straight from the archive.Related Issue (if any)
