PR Checklist

  • Functionality has been tested, no obvious bugs
  • Code style follows project conventions
  • Documentation/comments updated (if applicable)

Brief Description of Changes

Register an explicit AppUserModelID before any window is created, so the Windows system media flyout shows QuickLook instead of a generic host process.

  • Publish the identity through a per-user Start menu shortcut (System.AppUserModel.ID = QuickLook).
  • Call SetCurrentProcessExplicitAppUserModelID at startup.
  • Upgrade QuickLook.WPFMediaKit to 3.0.1 and replace the direct DirectShowLib-2005 reference with the DirectShowLib.Standard 2.1.0 NuGet package.

Related Issue (if any)

Related to #1993

Additional Notes

Test plan

  • Preview a video or audio file and confirm the media flyout title is QuickLook.
  • Confirm %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\QuickLook.lnk is created and points at the running executable.
  • Play, pause, and seek a video preview after the WPFMediaKit 3.0.1 upgrade.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Updated video playback support, which may improve compatibility with supported video formats and devices.
    • Improved how QuickLook is identified by Windows, including its Start menu shortcut and taskbar grouping.
    • QuickLook’s Windows app identity and Start menu shortcut are registered automatically when the app runs outside UWP.
    • Registration errors are handled without interrupting app startup.

Upgrade WPFMediaKit to 3.0.1 and switch DirectShowLib to the NuGet package.

📝 Walkthrough

The application now registers a Windows AppUserModelID at startup when it is not running as UWP. New methods create, update, and remove matching Start menu shortcuts. The video viewer project updates its media and DirectShow package references.

Changes: Windows AppUserModel registration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register and manage AppUserModel shortcuts
QuickLook/NativeMethods/AppUserModel.cs
AppUserModel validates inputs, sets the process ID, creates or updates a Start menu shortcut, removes shortcuts with a matching ID, and notifies the shell.
Wire registration into startup
QuickLook/App.xaml.cs
When the process is not running as UWP, App.xaml.cs registers the "QuickLook" AppUserModelID. It logs registration exceptions.

Video viewer dependencies

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update video viewer package references
QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.VideoViewer/QuickLook.Plugin.VideoViewer.csproj
The project upgrades QuickLook.WPFMediaKit from 2.3.4 to 3.0.1, adds DirectShowLib.Standard 2.1.0, and removes the DirectShowLib-2005 assembly reference.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 47418

No actionable merge-blocking issue was established. The planned media-flyout and video-playback checks remain useful normal validation.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to afde7

The change can replace an existing user shortcut and make identity registration failures block application startup. The impact appears limited to the current user. The upgraded media dependencies have not been fully assessed.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: Startup saves a fresh Programs/QuickLook.lnk without inspecting the existing shortcut’s identity or executable target. Launching another installation can therefore repoint the same per-user launcher and replace its existing configuration. Persistent launcher ownership is determined by the latest launch rather than verified installation ownership.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: Identity registration becomes a fail-stop prerequisite in the static application constructor. Shortcut or COM failures can prevent application startup before its normal error handlers are installed. A failure after the shortcut is saved can also leave persistent launcher state changed without completing process registration or compensating for the write.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated identity mutation affects the current process and a shortcut in the current user’s Programs directory, under the launching process’s existing permissions. A different executable location can become the persistent launcher target after that copy is run. This does not establish privilege elevation or cross-user control.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Media files continue to reach external WPFMediaKit, DirectShow, and LAV playback components after the existing admission check. The unchanged caller and configured LAV directory are counterevidence to an application-level reachability expansion, but they do not prove that upgraded package implementations preserve native loading, process, or network behavior.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A cleanup API deletes shortcuts with matching AppUserModelID metadata, but no repository caller was found. Application exit disposes runtime services rather than compensating for registration. The cleanup API therefore does not provide an invoked recovery path for the new startup transition.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define launcher ownership across installed and portable copies before replacing an existing shortcut. Contain identity integration failures so they do not unnecessarily prevent preview startup, and define recovery for a partially completed persistent mutation. Serialize or otherwise coordinate competing registration attempts.

🟡 Changes recommended

Unhandled shortcut or COM failures during static initialization can prevent QuickLook from launching.
