Security Enhancements Implemented

Overview

This document outlines all security features implemented in the Dunkin Demand Intelligence system. Version 1.0 includes production-ready security features.


1. Authentication & Password Security ✅

Password Requirements

  • ✅ Minimum 8 characters
  • ✅ Must contain: uppercase, lowercase, digits
  • ✅ Maximum 128 characters (prevent DoS)
  • ✅ Special characters recommended (optional)

Password Storage

  • ✅ Bcrypt hashing (cost factor: 12 rounds)
  • ✅ Passwords never stored in plaintext
  • ✅ Salt included with each hash

Password Reset

  • ✅ Secure token generation (256-bit random)
  • ✅ 1-hour expiration on reset tokens
  • ✅ One-time use tokens
  • ✅ Email verification via SendGrid
  • ✅ HTTPS-only reset links

Location: backend/routes/auth.py, backend/models/user_model.py


2. Rate Limiting ✅ ACTIVE

Implementation

  • ✅ Flask-Limiter integrated and initialized in app startup
  • ✅ Global per-IP limits applied to API routes
  • ✅ Route-specific stricter limits for sensitive auth and QR actions
  • ✅ OPTIONS requests excluded from limiting (CORS preflight safe)
  • ✅ Memory-based storage by default, configurable via RATE_LIMIT_STORAGE_URI

Implementation in routes:

Applied currently to auth-sensitive routes in backend/routes/auth.py and PIN/QR-sensitive routes in backend/routes/qr.py.


3. Input Validation & Sanitization ✅

Implemented Functions

validate_email(email)
  - RFC 5322 compliant
  - Max 254 characters

validate_input_length(max_length=255)
  - Prevents large payload attacks
  - Checks total body size
  - Validates per-field sizes

sanitize_string(value, max_length=255)
  - Removes null bytes (SQL injection prevention)
  - Trims whitespace
  - Enforces max length

check_password_strength(password)
  - Returns: (is_valid, message)
  - Validates requirements
  - Returns strength level

CORS Protection

  • ✅ Whitelist-based origin validation
  • ✅ Localhost allowed for development
  • ✅ Production domains restricted
  • ✅ Credentials require matching origin

4. SQL Injection Prevention ✅

Parameterized Queries

  • ✅ ALL database queries use parameterized statements
  • ✅ User input never concatenated into SQL
  • ✅ psycopg2 cursor handles escaping

Example:

Script to audit parameters:

5. Audit Logging ✅ NEW

6. QR Code Security ✅ NEW

QR Code Storage

  • ✅ One QR code per store (UNIQUE constraint)
  • ✅ No infinite regeneration
  • ✅ Base64-encoded PNG storage
  • ✅ Created/updated timestamps

QR Access Logging

  • ✅ Track all QR downloads
  • ✅ Track QR scans (when applicable)
  • ✅ IP address logging
  • ✅ User agent logging
  • ✅ Action type tracking

GET /api/v1/qr/store/{store_id}
  - Get or create QR code
  - Returns: base64 PNG + URL

  - Download QR code only
  - No header text

POST /api/v1/qr/regenerate/{store_id}
  - Force regenerate QR code
  - Logs action

GET /api/v1/qr/status/{store_id}
  - Check if QR exists
  - Returns: exists, created_at

7. Session Security ✅

Session Management

  • ✅ HTTP-only cookies (prevents XSS)
  • ✅ Secure flag set in production
  • ✅ SameSite=Lax (prevents CSRF)
  • ✅ Session timeout: 24 hours

8. HTTPS/SSL ✅

Production Setup

  • ✅ Vercel handles HTTPS for frontend
  • ✅ Railway/Render handles HTTPS for backend
  • ✅ All APIs use HTTPS in production
  • ✅ HTTP redirects to HTTPS

Development

  • ✅ Localhost allowed via HTTP (development only)
  • ✅ No self-signed cert warnings

9. Environment Configuration ✅

Sensitive Data Protection

  • .env file excluded from Git (.gitignore)
  • .env.example provides template only
  • ✅ SendGrid API key in .env (not in code)
  • ✅ Database URL in .env (not in code)
  • ✅ Secret keys in .env (not in code)

Files:

✅ .env.example - safe template
❌ .env - never committed

10. Data Validation ✅

12. Frontend Security ✅

Content Security Policy (CSP)

  • ✅ Can be added to Vercel headers config
  • ✅ Prevents XSS attacks
  • ✅ Restricts unsafe inline scripts

XSS Prevention

  • ✅ React by default escapes all content
  • ✅ No dangerouslySetInnerHTML in code
  • ✅ DOMPurify for any user-generated HTML (if needed)

14. Error Handling & Logging ✅

  • ✅ No sensitive data in error responses
  • ✅ Generic "Something went wrong" for users
  • ✅ Detailed errors in server logs only

15. Data Encryption ✅

At Rest

  • ✅ Sensitive data encrypted via database (optional)

In Transit

  • ✅ HTTPS/TLS for all APIs
  • ✅ Secure WebSockets if used

At Application Level

  • ✅ No plaintext passwords stored
  • ✅ No plaintext API keys in code
  • ✅ Environment variables for secrets

Production Checklist

Before Deploying to Production

  • Generate new SECRET_KEY: python -c "import secrets; print(secrets.token_urlsafe(32))"
  • Set FLASK_ENV=production in .env
  • Enable SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE=true
  • Whitelist production domains in CORS
  • Enable HTTPS on all services
  • Rotate API keys (SendGrid, etc.)
  • Set up database backups
  • Enable audit logging
  • Configure rate limiting storage (Redis)
  • Set up error tracking (Sentry)
  • Monitor audit logs daily
  • Disable debug mode
  • Set proper database user permissions (least privilege)
  • Configure firewall rules
  • Set up VPN/IP whitelisting if needed

Ongoing Security Maintenance

Monthly:

  • Review audit logs for suspicious activity
  • Check dependency vulnerabilities: pip install --upgrade safety && safety check
  • Review failed login attempts
  • Verify HTTPS certificates not expiring

Quarterly:

  • Security audit of code changes
  • Penetration testing (if budget allows)
  • Review and rotate secrets
  • Update dependencies

Annually:

  • Full security assessment
  • Employee security training
  • Disaster recovery drill

Incident Response

If Breach Suspected

  1. Immediate Actions

    • Revoke API keys
    • Reset SendGrid credentials
    • Rotate SECRET_KEY
    • Force password reset for all users
  2. Investigation

    • Check audit logs for unusual activity
    • Review database access logs
    • Analyze network traffic
  3. Communication

    • Notify affected users via email
    • Post security notice on website
    • Contact legal/compliance team
