Summary

Adds rocky as an OS criteria value, plus an os-rocky mixin and an rke2-rocky overlay, so aicr recipe --service rke2 --os rocky resolves a recipe.

Motivation / Context

Fixes: #1886
Related: N/A

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring (no functional changes)
  • Build/CI/tooling

Component(s) Affected

  • CLI (cmd/aicr, pkg/cli)
  • API server (cmd/aicrd, pkg/server)
  • Recipe engine / data (pkg/recipe)
  • Bundler and deployers (pkg/bundler, pkg/component)
  • Collectors / snapshotter (pkg/collector, pkg/snapshotter)
  • Validator (pkg/validator)
  • Core libraries (pkg/errors, pkg/k8s)
  • Docs/examples (docs/, examples/)
  • Other: pkg/fingerprint, pkg/client/v1

Implementation Notes

  • Uses the OS criteria, mixin and RKE2 overlay pattern from feat(recipes): support SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (os: sles) on RKE2 #3040.
  • No driver override. The GPU Operator tags Rocky driver images by major version (case "ol", "rocky", "rhel" in its controllers/state_manager.go), and nvcr.io/nvidia/driver has 580.173.02-rocky9 and 580.173.02-rocky10.
  • rke2-rocky takes the same non-NRI toolkit path as rke2-sles, since the root's NRI default is meant for Preview leaves. It leaves gdrcopy alone; rke2-sles turns that off only because of the precompiled drivers.
  • The mixin floor is Rocky 9 (VERSION_ID >= 9.0), since Rocky 8 left active support in May 2024. No kernel floor, same as os-sles.
  • I went with rke2 because feat(recipes): support SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (os: sles) on RKE2 #3040 set the pattern there. Happy to move the overlay to bcm if that's the better first target.

Testing

I don't have Rocky GPU nodes, so this is unit tests plus offline recipe and bundle generation.

go test -race ./pkg/recipe/... ./recipes/... ./pkg/fingerprint/... ./pkg/snapshotter/... ./pkg/client/v1/... ./pkg/server/... ./tools/schemagen/... ./pkg/cli/
go test -race ./pkg/bundler/ -run TestStockRenderParityGolden
golangci-lint run ./pkg/recipe/... ./pkg/fingerprint/... ./pkg/snapshotter/... ./pkg/cli/... ./pkg/client/v1/...
make tuning-check
aicr recipe --service rke2 --os rocky --intent training -o recipe.yaml
aicr bundle --recipe recipe.yaml --output bundle

All pass, and golangci-lint v2.14.0 reports 0 issues. The training recipe applies base, monitoring-hpa, rke2, rke2-rocky and rke2-training, and the bundle's gpu-operator values have cdi.nriPluginEnabled: false and CONTAINERD_SOCKET set, with the stock driver. Goldens were regenerated with AICR_UPDATE_GOLDEN=1 and the schemas with go run ./tools/schemagen; the golden diffs only add entries. Coverage is unchanged against main: pkg/recipe 90.9%, pkg/fingerprint 98.8%, pkg/recipe/oskind 100%. I didn't run the full make test, make lint or make qualify.

Risk Assessment

  • Low: Isolated change, well-tested, easy to revert
  • Medium: Touches multiple components or has broader impact
  • High: Breaking change, affects critical paths, or complex rollout

Rollout notes: N/A. Adds an OS value and a new leaf overlay; existing recipes render the same.

Checklist

  • Tests pass locally (make test with -race)
  • Linter passes (make lint)
  • I did not skip/disable tests to make CI green
  • I added/updated tests for new functionality
  • I updated docs if user-facing behavior changed
  • Changes follow existing patterns in the codebase
  • Commits are signed off and cryptographically signed (git commit -s -S)

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds Rocky Linux as a recognized operating system in fingerprint normalization and recipe criteria. API schemas and CLI interfaces now accept rocky. It adds an os-rocky mixin and an rke2-rocky recipe with a Rocky Linux 9.0 minimum and GPU Operator and nvsentinel settings. Documentation and test data also include Rocky Linux. The integrator guide updates Talos mixin guidance.

The PR adds rocky to OS criteria, API schemas, CLI and snapshot paths. It adds os-rocky with a Rocky VERSION_ID >= 9.0 constraint and adds the rke2-rocky recipe overlay. It adds Rocky documentation, OS detection tests, criteria tests, recipe coverage, and bundle golden data.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #1886. The mixin, RKE2 overlay, schema updates, CLI and API updates, OS detection changes, documentation, tests, and generated golden data support Rocky recipe generation, validation, or bundle creation.

Recipe evidence check

No leaf overlays affected by this PR.

This gate is warning-only and never blocks merge.

Recognize Rocky Linux (/etc/os-release ID=rocky) in oskind, ParseOS and
fingerprint OS detection, and list it in the API enums, CLI help and docs.

The mixin requires ID=rocky and VERSION_ID >= 9.0. The overlay keeps the
stock driver: the GPU Operator tags Rocky driver images by major version
(rocky9, rocky10) and nvcr.io publishes both for the pinned driver. Like
rke2-sles, it takes the non-NRI toolkit path instead of the rke2 root's
experimental NRI plugin.

No existing test exercises OS.release.VERSION_ID >= 9.0 for both an accepted Rocky version and a rejected version below 9.0. Add those cases to the smallest existing recipe constraint evaluator test location, using the repository’s evaluator API and Rocky mixin.

issue (blocking): rke2-rocky inherits gdrcopy.enabled: true, and nvcr.io publishes no Rocky gdrdrv image, so the driver DaemonSet never becomes Ready.

GPU Operator v26.7.2 adds the nvidia-gdrcopy sidecar to the driver DaemonSet and tags it with the node OS (rocky9 or rocky10), giving nvcr.io/nvidia/cloud-native/gdrdrv:v2.6-rocky9. That tag returns 404 (none of the 167 gdrdrv tags mention rocky; v2.6-rhel9 exists), so the sidecar sits in ImagePullBackOff on every Rocky GPU node. The driver pod never goes Ready, no GPUs are exposed, and gpu-operator-health fails; the PR description says gdrcopy is left alone, so this was not an intended trade-off.

Turn gdrcopy off in the gpu-operator overrides, with a comment saying why, until NVIDIA publishes Rocky gdrdrv images.

@vjsairam thanks for the PR. After discussing it with the team, we'd like to narrow its scope.

What it adds:

  • Snapshot recognition: ID=rocky now maps to rocky instead of an empty OS.
  • A Rocky 9 version floor in os-rocky.
  • Confirmation that the stock driver images exist for Rocky (rocky9, rocky10).

What it doesn't:

  • The toolkit settings in rke2-rocky aren't specific to Rocky; they're the same as rke2-sles.
  • There's no intent leaf.
  • Nothing has run on Rocky GPU nodes.

Could you narrow this PR to OS recognition: the rocky criteria value, the fingerprint and snapshot mapping, and the docs/enum updates? That closes #1886 without claiming a recipe works. Please hold the os-rocky mixin and rke2-rocky overlay for a follow-up once they've been run on Rocky GPU nodes. @lockwobr's gdrcopy fix would go into that follow-up too.
