Summary

Rewrites tools/cleanup from bash to Go, adds a two-way namespace parity test, and moves Helm execution into a shared pkg/helm.Run that cleanup and RenderChart both use.

Motivation / Context

The bash script hardcoded namespace and CRD lists that drifted from the recipe registry, and its logic could not be unit tested. The Go tool reads component namespaces from pkg/recipe, so the list stays in sync with the registry. A parity test fails if they drift, and every deliberate exception records its reason.

Fixes: #2695
Related: N/A

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring (no functional changes)
  • Build/CI/tooling

Component(s) Affected

  • CLI (cmd/aicr, pkg/cli)
  • API server (cmd/aicrd, pkg/server)
  • Recipe engine / data (pkg/recipe)
  • Bundler and deployers (pkg/bundler, pkg/component)
  • Collectors / snapshotter (pkg/collector, pkg/snapshotter)
  • Validator (pkg/validator)
  • Core libraries (pkg/errors, pkg/k8s)
  • Docs/examples (docs/, examples/)
  • Other: tools/cleanup, pkg/helm, pkg/defaults, validators/conformance, DEVELOPMENT.md, Makefile

Implementation Notes

  • Namespaces come from pkg/recipe, as the union of registry defaultNamespace values and recipe componentRefs namespaces. CRD groups are the aicrCRDGroups map in tools/cleanup/cleaner.go. Kubernetes deletes go through client-go. Helm is still called as a CLI, and helm list is paged with --max and --offset, since it otherwise returns at most 256 releases. If helm is not on PATH or helm list fails, the uninstall phase is skipped with a warning as before, and namespace deletion is skipped too.
  • Exceptions are data with a reason per entry:
    • notOwnedNamespaces lists namespaces cleanup never deletes: kube-system, default, kube-public and kube-node-lease.
    • runtimeNamespaces lists namespaces cleanup owns that no recipe names: skyhook, kai-resource-reservation and gang-scheduling-test.
    • sharedNamespaces lists owned namespaces deleted only when phase 1 finds an AICR release in them: openshift-nfd and cert-manager-operator.
    • legacyComponents lists former component names whose releases older installs still carry: skyhook-operator, skyhook-customizations, dynamo-crds and rdma-netns-exclusive.
  • TestOwnedNamespaces checks parity in both directions:
    • Every namespace the catalog deploys into must be cleaned up or listed in notOwnedNamespaces.
    • Every namespace cleanup deletes must come from the catalog or runtimeNamespaces.
    • It also rejects an exception with no reason, a runtime entry a recipe already names, and a namespace on both lists.
    • It rejects a sharedNamespaces entry with no reason, one no recipe names, and one cleanup would not otherwise delete.
  • pkg/helm.Run runs helm with a timeout and a cap on stdout. Failures are classified as output over the limit, context ended (ErrCodeTimeout or ErrCodeCanceled), or command failure with stderr attached. Cleanup and RenderChart both use it. localformat/vendor.go is unchanged, since helm pull needs combined output and a configurable binary.
  • RenderChart passes values to helm on stdin (--values -) instead of writing a temp file.
  • bundleinfo.ComponentReleaseNames returns the Helm release names a bundle can install for a component. That is the component's own name, plus that name with each injected suffix (-pre, -post and -readiness), taken from the list bundleinfo already keeps.
  • Three names shared between cleanup and the code that creates those resources move into pkg/defaults: ValidationNamespace, GangSchedulingTestNamespacePrefix and AgentClusterRoleName. pkg/validator, pkg/cli, pkg/k8s/agent and validators/conformance now use them.
  • Cleanup reuses errors.ExitCodeFromError for exit codes and k8s.IgnoreNotFound for deletes.
  • make cleanup now runs go run ./tools/cleanup. Flags are unchanged.

Behavior changes worth noting:

  • Phase 1 uninstalls a release only when both its namespace and its name belong to AICR. The name must be a registry or legacy component name, with or without an injected suffix. Other releases in AICR namespaces are logged and skipped, and phase 4 keeps their namespaces, so helm uninstall still works for them.
  • Phase 4 deletes openshift-nfd and cert-manager-operator only when phase 1 finds an AICR release there. On OpenShift the platform team often installs those operators through OperatorHub, and GPU Operator depends on NFD.
  • Phase 4 is skipped with a warning when helm is not installed or helm list fails. Without the release list, cleanup can't tell which namespaces hold releases it would orphan.
  • Phase 2 honors --exclude-ns and --keep-namespaces for aicr-validation. With --keep-namespaces it keeps the namespace but still deletes the Jobs and ConfigMaps aicr validate left there. The --keep-namespaces help now reads "skip namespace deletion".
  • Cleanup never deletes default, kube-public or kube-node-lease. No recipe targets them today.
  • Cleanup now deletes five namespaces the bash script never touched, all registry defaults for components AICR installs: gatekeeper-system, node-problem-detector, mariadb-system, nvcre and k8s-aibom-system. An operator who shares one fences it with --exclude-ns.
  • cert-manager and monitoring stay owned, because they are registry defaults for components AICR installs. An operator who shares them fences them with --exclude-ns.
  • When the context ends before helm finishes, RenderChart returns ErrCodeTimeout or ErrCodeCanceled instead of ErrCodeInternal. Its error context keys are now args and stderr, replacing component and stderr.
  • Cleanup exit codes follow the shared mapping. Invalid flags and positional arguments exit with 2.
  • Ctrl-C at the confirmation prompt exits right away with the canceled exit code, without touching the cluster.

Testing

# Commands run (prefer `make qualify` for non-trivial changes)
make qualify
  • Cleanup tests use fake clientsets and an in-memory helm runner. They write no files and need no shell script. The pkg/helm.Run tests use the Go helper-process pattern, the same one pkg/oci and pkg/bundler/verifier use.
  • Breaking the namespace derivation makes the parity test fail and name the missing namespaces, including nvcre and mariadb-system.
  • golangci-lint run -c .golangci.yaml reports 0 issues on every changed package.
  • Coverage: pkg/helm 28.7% → 95.4% (+66.7%), pkg/bundler/bundleinfo 93.4%, tools/cleanup 83.5% (new package).
  • The pkg/bundler/validations tests that do real helm renders pass.

Risk Assessment

  • Low — Isolated change, well-tested, easy to revert
  • Medium — Touches multiple components or has broader impact
  • High — Breaking change, affects critical paths, or complex rollout

The cleanup changes only affect a developer tool. Most of them narrow what it deletes, with one exception: it now also deletes gatekeeper-system, node-problem-detector, mariadb-system, nvcre and k8s-aibom-system, which the bash script left behind. The pkg/helm change is on the bundler's render path, and the shared constants touch the validator and CLI. The constants keep their old values, and the existing real helm render tests cover the render path.

Rollout notes: make cleanup needs a Go toolchain instead of bash and kubectl. It now deletes the five namespaces above as well; fence any you share with --exclude-ns. A Helm release in an AICR namespace under a name no bundle uses is no longer uninstalled, and its namespace is kept; cleanup logs both, so the operator can remove the release with helm uninstall. openshift-nfd and cert-manager-operator are kept unless AICR installed into them. Without a working helm, cleanup no longer deletes namespaces.

Checklist

  • Tests pass locally (make test with -race)
  • Linter passes (make lint)
  • I did not skip/disable tests to make CI green
  • I added/updated tests for new functionality
  • I updated docs if user-facing behavior changed
  • Changes follow existing patterns in the codebase
  • Commits are signed off and cryptographically signed (git commit -s -S) — GPG signing info

📝 Walkthrough

The cleanup shell script is replaced by a Go command that discovers owned namespaces and Helm releases, supports retention and exclusion options, and removes selected AICR resources. The command detects driver-managed clusters and handles terminating namespaces. A bounded Helm runner supports cleanup and chart rendering; rendering sends inline values through stdin. Shared defaults replace several literals. Tests cover command parsing, namespace ownership, cleanup behavior, and Helm execution. Build and development instructions now use go run.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2695 requires bidirectional namespace parity, reasoned exceptions, and future drift detection. tools/cleanup/namespaces_test.go derives catalog namespaces from registry defaults and recipe component references. TestOwnedNamespaces checks catalog coverage, reverse ownership, exception reasons, runtime consistency, shared-namespace consistency, and list overlap. The six reported gaps are added or represented by documented owned/shared exception entries.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Issue #2695 retains namespace parity and alignment, but it explicitly does not require replacing Bash cleanup with Go or rebuilding teardown. This pull request also changes Helm execution and RenderChart, adds Helm release ownership and uninstall logic, migrates shared constants, changes build and developer guidance, and deletes the existing cleanup test harness. These changes are broader than the linked issue.

Resolution

Limit this pull request to namespace parity enforcement, namespace alignment, and reasoned exception data. Move the Go cleanup rewrite, teardown redesign, Helm and RenderChart changes, shared constant migrations, and unrelated build or documentation changes to separate pull requests.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Bound Helm stderr capture.

run sends stderr to an unbounded bytes.Buffer, while only stdout uses limitedWriter. The render and cleanup paths use finite timeouts, but a timeout limits duration, not bytes written. A fast Helm or chart failure can still consume excessive memory during that window.

Store only a fixed-size stderr excerpt and retain it in the error context. This is a narrow memory-risk issue, so minor severity is appropriate.

Replace the bash cleanup script with a Go tool. Namespaces come from
pkg/recipe, CRD groups are a Go map, Kubernetes deletes go through
client-go, and helm runs through a new shared pkg/helm.Run.

pkg/helm.Run executes helm with a timeout and a stdout cap, and
RenderChart now uses it. Values reach helm on stdin, so no temp file
is written. Shared names move into pkg/defaults. Exit codes come from
errors.ExitCodeFromError.

Tests use fake clientsets and an in-memory helm fake. The bash test
script is removed.

Rewrite the doc comments added with the cleanup rewrite to follow Go doc
comment conventions. Each starts with the declared name, states what it
does rather than how, and keeps special cases and error conditions.
Implementation notes move into inline comments in the function bodies,
and test helpers name their results so their comments can refer to them.

Phase 2 deleted the aicr-validation namespace even when --exclude-ns
named it or --keep-namespaces was set. It now checks both, as phase 4
does for every other namespace.

Add default, kube-public and kube-node-lease to the namespaces cleanup
refuses to own, alongside kube-system. No recipe targets them today,
but a component that did would otherwise get them uninstalled and
deleted.

Signed-off-by: Mike Cook <micook@nvidia.com>
Every namespace the catalog deploys into must be cleaned up or listed
in notOwnedNamespaces, and every namespace cleanup deletes must come
from the catalog or runtimeNamespaces. Both exception lists now carry
a reason per entry as data, and the test rejects an entry with no
reason, a runtime entry a recipe already names, or a namespace on both
lists.

Signed-off-by: Mike Cook <micook@nvidia.com>
Phase 1 uninstalled every Helm release in an AICR namespace, so a
release someone else installed there went with it. It now also requires
the release name to be one a bundle installs for a registry component,
its own or an injected -pre, -post or -readiness release, and logs any
other release it skips.

bundleinfo.ComponentReleaseNames exposes that name set from the list of
injected suffixes bundleinfo already keeps.

Signed-off-by: Mike Cook <micook@nvidia.com>
Installs made before the Skyhook to Nodewright rename carry
skyhook-operator and skyhook-customizations releases, which the
release-name filter skipped because neither is a registry component
now. List them, with a reason each, as legacy components cleanup still

Run buffered helm's stderr without limit. It now keeps only the last
defaults.HelmStderrLimit (64 KiB) bytes, which is where helm prints
its Error: line. The buffer never fails a write, since a failed write
closes the pipe and would kill a helm that is only verbose. Stdout
keeps its existing limitedWriter.

Drop the sentence describing how pkg/helm.Run fills the buffer. The
constant's doc states only what it caps.

A child helm starts can inherit its stdout or stderr. Killing helm at
the timeout left cmd.Run waiting until that child closed the pipe, so
the timeout did not bound Run. Run now sets cmd.WaitDelay to
defaults.HelmWaitDelay (2s), after which exec closes the pipes and
returns.

The test has the fake helm leave a hanging child holding both pipes,
once exiting normally and once killed at the timeout, and checks that
Run returns well before the child would.

Phase 1 skips a release whose name no bundle installs, but phase 4
still deleted its namespace. That deleted the release record and left
the release's cluster-scoped objects with no helm uninstall path.
Phase 4 now keeps any namespace holding such a release and logs the
release names.

…leases

Both are former registry components whose releases upgraded clusters
still carry, dynamo-crds in dynamo-system and rdma-netns-exclusive in
skyhook or nodewright. The release-name filter skipped them. List them
as legacy components cleanup still owns.

openshift-nfd and cert-manager-operator are registry defaults for the
OCP NFD and cert-manager components, but on OpenShift the platform
team often installs those operators through OperatorHub, with no Helm
release. Deleting openshift-nfd then takes out the NFD that GPU
Operator depends on. Phase 4 now deletes these namespaces only when
phase 1 finds an AICR release in them, and logs why it kept one.

With --keep-namespaces, phase 2 kept aicr-validation and nothing else
removed the Jobs and ConfigMaps aicr validate leaves there. It now
deletes the objects labeled as aicr validate's from that namespace
while keeping the namespace, so an administrator-provisioned
ServiceAccount there survives.

The bash cleanup accepted -n for --dry-run and -y for --yes, and
scripts that pass them failed with an invalid-flags exit. Register
both as aliases.

The prompt read stdin without watching the context, so Ctrl-C did
nothing until Enter was pressed. It now returns once the context is
done, and run exits with the canceled error without touching the
cluster.

Describe the namespaces phase 4 keeps without a flag, one holding a
Helm release AICR does not own, and openshift-nfd and
cert-manager-operator without an AICR release, and what
--keep-namespaces still removes from aicr-validation.

Signed-off-by: Mike Cook <micook@nvidia.com>
When helm is not installed or helm list fails, phase 1 uninstalls
nothing and phase 4 saw an empty release list. It then deleted every
owned namespace, including ones holding releases AICR does not own,
which orphans those releases and every AICR release left in place.
Phase 4 now skips namespace deletion with a warning when the release
list is unknown.

helm list returns at most 256 releases unless --max is given, so on a
larger cluster cleanup missed releases: phase 1 did not uninstall them
and phase 4 did not keep the namespaces of releases AICR does not own.
List releases in pages with --max and --offset until a page comes back
short.

Signed-off-by: Mike Cook <micook@nvidia.com>
Helm 3 lists only deployed and failed releases by default, so cleanup
missed pending releases, often the stuck installs it is run to remove,
and phase 4 did not keep namespaces holding pending releases AICR does
not own. Pass every status filter explicitly, since Helm 4 rejects
Helm 3's --all.

Paging helm list with --max and --offset is not stable across calls.
Helm sorts by name only, so two releases sharing a name in different
namespaces can swap places between calls, and a page boundary then
returns one twice and skips the other. List once with --max 0, which
lifts helm's 256-release default cap. ClusterCleanupHelmOutputLimit
still bounds the read.

cleanup lists releases in every status, and any AICR release counted
as AICR owning a sharedNamespaces entry. A release left by helm
uninstall --keep-history then unlocked deleting openshift-nfd even
after the platform team reinstalled NFD there through OperatorHub.
Decode each release's status and let only a release that is not
uninstalled vouch for a shared namespace.

aicr validate without --snapshot runs the snapshot agent in
aicr-validation by default. Under --keep-namespaces, phase 2 swept that
namespace only for validator Jobs and ConfigMaps, so an interrupted run
left the agent's Job, ServiceAccount, Role and RoleBinding behind. Sweep
those too.

The match is by the agent's run labels only, not the legacy fixed name,
so an unlabeled ServiceAccount an administrator provisioned there
survives.

Without a helm release list only phase 4 keeps its namespaces. Phase 2
still deletes aicr-validation, so "every namespace" overclaimed.

nit (non-blocking): Two DEVELOPMENT.md passages no longer match cleanup: the shared-namespace rule and the aicr-validation sweep list.

Lines 642-643 say any AICR release found in openshift-nfd or cert-manager-operator unlocks deletion, but phase 1 lists with --uninstalled and only a release not in uninstalled status counts (cleaner.go:344-348). Lines 650-652 read as the full list of what is removed from a kept aicr-validation, but the snapshot agent's staging ConfigMap aicr-agent-snapshot-<runID> matches neither sweep and stays after aicr validate --no-cleanup or a killed run.

Apply the suggestion for 642-645, and at 650-652 add a sentence such as: "The snapshot agent's staging ConfigMap (aicr-agent-snapshot-<runID>) is left in place."

Suggested change
- `openshift-nfd` and `cert-manager-operator`, unless phase 1 finds an AICR
release in them. On OpenShift the platform team often installs these
operators through OperatorHub. The list is `sharedNamespaces` in
`tools/cleanup/namespaces.go`.
- `openshift-nfd` and `cert-manager-operator`, unless phase 1 finds an AICR
release in them that is not in `uninstalled` status. On OpenShift the
platform team often installs these operators through OperatorHub. The list
is `sharedNamespaces` in `tools/cleanup/namespaces.go`.

A shared namespace is deleted only when phase 1 finds an AICR release there that is not uninstalled. The snapshot agent's staging ConfigMap matches neither aicr-validation sweep and stays after aicr validate --no-cleanup or a killed run.
