MANAGER="helm": say that an omitted spec.names.shortNames field is pruned only
when helm is its sole owner, since shared ownership leaves the field in place
even with --force-conflicts. Carry the same qualification into the generated
guidance and add a regression test for the shared-owner case.

Reviewed at 350f980. The corrected rationale matches the API types (spec.versions and spec.names.shortNames are both listType=atomic), and the envtest cases pin each claim, including the three controls. LGTM.

Summary
Adds the API-server-backed regression #2843 asked for: a test that runs the component catalog's manual CRD-upgrade block, exactly as published, against envtest. Running it showed parts of the documented rationale were wrong, so this also corrects that rationale in the catalog, the generated
apply-crds.sh, the helm bundle README, and one grove upgrade-record reason. The command itself is unchanged.Motivation / Context
#2845 already fixed the doc text for acceptance criteria 1 to 3. Criterion 4, a regression proving the command updates an existing CRD and removes a field or
spec.versionsentry the target chart omits, was left open. While pinning it, three claims the docs made turned out to be false:kubectl replacedoes not fail on an existing CRD. kubectl copies the liveresourceVersioninto the object before sending it, so the documented "API returnsConflict" does not happen. Its real cost is a full overwrite that discards fields other managers set, which is still the reason to avoid it.spec.versionsis an atomic list, so any--force-conflictsapply replaces it whole, under any field manager. A dropped version or schema property disappears even under a barekubectl apply --server-side;--field-managermatters only for fields outside that list.helmadopts Helm's fieldset" holds only for Helm 4. Helm 4 records its CRD ownership with an Apply operation. Helm 3 andterraform-provider-helm(pinned~> 3.0, which embeds the Helm 3 library) record an Update operation, which server-side apply tracks as a separate owner even under the same manager name. After those installs, a field the original install set outsidespec.versions(for examplespec.names.shortNames) stays behind whateverMANAGERsays. More generally, server-side apply prunes an omitted field only when the applier is its sole owner, so a second manager holding the same field (even with the same value) also keeps it. The earlier "verified on Helm 3" result held only because the removed property sat inside the atomic list.Making the command fully authoritative for Update-op ownership would be a behavior change; this PR documents the limitation instead, and the test pins it.

pkg/bundler/deployer/localformat/catalog_crd_command_test.go) extracts the one bash block indocs/user/component-catalog.mdcontaining the apply line, pinsCHART/VERSION/REPO/MANAGER(each must match exactly once, so a renamed variable fails rather than running the documented default), and runs it against envtest with envtest's own kubectl. Charts are served from a local classic repo sohelm pull --reporuns unchanged. The fixture upgrade drops a non-storage version, a schema property, andspec.names.shortNames, and another manager labels the CRD after install.--force-conflicts(fails on a conflict over helm'sspec.versions, CRD unchanged). Every other case asserts the dropped version and property are gone.CI=trueand skips locally. Uses only the dynamic client; no new go.mod dependencies.catalog-crd-command(plus-skip), modeled onnvcre-wiring. Thetestsjob already runs the test on code changes, but a docs-only PR editing the block skipstests. The job installs the pinned Helm and setup-envtest, runs only this test, and requires its PASS line so a rename cannot silently disarm it.spec.versions, and names edge cases checked against envtest: a version still instatus.storedVersionsmakes the API server reject the apply, so the command stops; another manager sharing a field keeps it; and a field that an earlier run of the command added is pruned normally as long asMANAGERstays the same. Theapply-crds.shtemplate comment and the README template now point to that section instead of restating it. Goldens regenerated; their diffs are comment, README text, and hash lines only.Testing
All pass, including all seven subtests of the new test against envtest (kube-apiserver 1.36.2, Helm 4). Coverage: test-only Go change, no production Go source touched.
make qualifydoes not complete locally:test-shell(tools/api-diff_test.sh) andlint-go(golangci-lint cannot read Go 1.27 export data) both fail here identically on unmodifiedmain, so they are local environment issues; CI is the check for those. The newcatalog-crd-commandmerge-gate job has run and passed on this PR.Risk Assessment
Rollout notes: No behavior change: the generated
apply-crds.shdiffers only in comments, and the catalog command is unchanged. The new merge-gate job adds a few minutes to PRs touching the catalog.Checklist
