Codex Real Engineering Skills is a Codex plugin that packages a set of engineering workflow skills for OpenAI Codex.
The skills are adapted from Matt Pocock's MIT-licensed engineering skills and organized as a Codex-native plugin bundle.
codex-real-engineering-skills:ask-matt- route to the right engineering workflow.codex-real-engineering-skills:codebase-design- use deep-module vocabulary for interfaces and seams.codex-real-engineering-skills:diagnosing-bugs- run a structured bug diagnosis loop.codex-real-engineering-skills:domain-modeling- sharpen domain terms and ADRs.codex-real-engineering-skills:grill-me- product or technical plan interrogation.codex-real-engineering-skills:grill-with-docs- stress-test plans against repo docs, context, and ADRs.codex-real-engineering-skills:grilling- shared relentless interview loop.codex-real-engineering-skills:handoff- write continuation notes for later sessions.codex-real-engineering-skills:improve-codebase-architecture- identify architecture refactors.codex-real-engineering-skills:prototype- build throwaway prototypes to answer a specific question.codex-real-engineering-skills:setup-engineering-skills- set up repo context docs for the engineering skills.codex-real-engineering-skills:tdd- run red-green-refactor development.codex-real-engineering-skills:teach- teach a new skill or concept with persistent learning artifacts.codex-real-engineering-skills:to-issues- convert plans into vertical-slice implementation issues.codex-real-engineering-skills:to-prd- write a PRD from existing context.codex-real-engineering-skills:triage- triage issues into clear roles and states.codex-real-engineering-skills:writing-great-skills- reference skill-writing principles.
Register the public GitHub marketplace source, then install the plugin from that marketplace:
codex plugin marketplace add MaxFabian25/codex-real-engineering-skills
codex plugin add codex-real-engineering-skills@codex-real-engineering-skillsIn the local umbrella workspace, the local-codex marketplace entry also points at this flat plugin root via ./plugins/codex-real-engineering-skills.
codex plugin add codex-real-engineering-skills@local-codexThen enable the installed plugin in your Codex config:
[plugins."codex-real-engineering-skills@codex-real-engineering-skills"]
enabled = trueRestart Codex after enabling the plugin so the new skills appear in the session prompt surface.
Check the local marketplace registration from the umbrella workspace:
PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 python3 scripts/verify_inventory.py --skip-runtimeCheck the public GitHub marketplace path from a clean temporary Codex home:
tmp_home="$(mktemp -d)"
CODEX_HOME="$tmp_home" codex plugin marketplace add MaxFabian25/codex-real-engineering-skills
CODEX_HOME="$tmp_home" codex plugin add codex-real-engineering-skills@codex-real-engineering-skills
rm -rf "$tmp_home"Check that Codex can see the plugin skills:
tmp_prompt="$(mktemp)"
codex debug prompt-input "verify codex-real-engineering-skills" > "$tmp_prompt"
rg "Codex Real Engineering Skills|codex-real-engineering-skills:tdd|codex-real-engineering-skills:diagnosing-bugs" "$tmp_prompt".codex-plugin/plugin.json

The plugin manifest and skill pack live at the repository root. Marketplace catalogs should point at this root instead of a nested payload directory; this repository's public marketplace manifest uses a GitHub url source for the flat plugin root.
