Replaces the existing marketing landing with the redesigned page that lived at /redesign-sample (originally from #4).

  • website/src/pages/redesign-sample.astro → website/src/pages/index.astro
  • Old index.astro removed
  • Existing /install, /docs, /changelog, /community are unchanged

Closes #3 once merged.

Move /redesign-sample to / and remove the previous marketing landing.

- Replaces the old BaseLayout/Nav/Hero-style home with the redesigned
'Synaptic Cyan' page from PR #4
- Drops /redesign-sample — its content now lives at /
- Existing /install, /docs, /changelog, /community remain unchanged

Tracked in #3.

Explanation

Issue #3 requires a sample page with working light and dark themes. The page uses data-theme in BaseLayout.astro and ThemeToggle.tsx, and redesign.css changes the Tailwind dark variant to data-theme='dark'. However, the dark color variables remain under .dark, and no reviewed code adds that class. Therefore, the dark palette does not activate. The page does use the permitted shadcn/ui and custom component approach, and the reviewed CSS defines the Synapse cyan/teal palette. Screenshot approval is a non-coding issue criterion and is not assessed here.

CRITICAL: Moving the redesign to / means the home page no longer goes through BaseLayout, so it silently loses a stack of features every other route gets:

  • <link rel="canonical"> and <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.svg">
  • Open Graph + Twitter Card meta tags (og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url, og:site_name, twitter:card, …)
  • The JSON-LD WebSite/SoftwareSourceCode blocks that the previous home page emitted
  • <ViewTransitions /> from astro:transitions, so navigation to/from / will hard-reload instead of using the same view-transition animation the rest of the site uses
  • The global.css import, tokens.css theme tokens, and the Inter/Space Grotesk/JetBrains Mono <link> tags BaseLayout preloads
  • The reveal-on-scroll IntersectionObserver and the FOUC-free theme boot script

Most of these are real regressions on the highest-traffic page of the site (especially canonical/OG/JSON-LD for SEO and ViewTransitions for UX consistency). Two reasonable fixes:

  1. Wrap the body content in <BaseLayout title="Synapse" description="…" jsonLd={ld}> like every other page does, or
  2. Re-implement the missing <head> markup + <ViewTransitions /> + boot scripts inline here.

Pick one — landing on / without OG tags or with a full page reload when clicking the GitHub/Install links is a visible regression.

CRITICAL: Theme persistence is broken across pages because this boot script and components/redesign/ThemeToggle.tsx disagree with BaseLayout.astro:

  • Here (and in ThemeToggle.tsx:17): localStorage key is syn-theme, toggle flips the .dark class on <html>, and dark mode is selected via @custom-variant dark (&:is(.dark *)) in redesign.css.
  • In BaseLayout.astro:72 and components/layout/ThemeToggle.astro:45: localStorage key is synapse-theme, the attribute set is data-theme="light|dark" on <html>.

Consequences for a user who flips the toggle:

  • Toggling on / and navigating to /docs (or any other route) → those pages read synapse-theme, fall back to dark, and ignore the user's choice → visible FOUC + the toggle visually reverts.
  • Toggling on /docs and navigating back to / → / reads syn-theme (unset), so it ignores the docs choice too.

Pick a single source of truth (one localStorage key and one <html> marker that both the BaseLayout boot script and the new ThemeToggle write to), or have BaseLayout look at both keys. As shipped, the toggle is per-page-only and the theme will flicker on every navigation.

SUGGESTION: The version 0.3.1 is hard-coded in three places in this file — the install command here, the nav badge at line 169, and the footer badge at line 485 — and it almost certainly also lives in package.json / a release config. When 0.3.2 ships, three (or more) places have to be edited in lockstep, which is how marketing pages end up advertising a stale version. Lift it into a single const VERSION = '0.3.1' (or import from a shared module) and reference it from all three sites.

Code Review Summary

Status: No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge

Both findings from the previous pass at 6d8d549 are resolved in 11dfaa8:

  • The six marketing components (SafetyPillars, ArchitectureDiagram, InstallSnippet, FeatureGrid, ComparisonTable, LiveCodePreview) no longer carry the orphaned reveal class, so dropping the reveal-on-scroll IntersectionObserver and the .reveal rules no longer leaves dead hooks on /install, /docs, /changelog, /community, etc.
  • @custom-variant dark in redesign.css is collapsed to the canonical &:where([data-theme='dark'] *), removing the duplicate descendant selector.

No new issues found in the incremental changes.

SUGGESTION 1

All four findings from the previous review pass at 3950bba3 are now resolved in this commit: the home page is wrapped in <BaseLayout>, the dead codeToHtml import is gone, the theme toggle reads/writes the synapse-theme / data-theme pair that the rest of the site uses, and the version is centralised into a single VERSION constant. The remaining concern is a regression on the unchanged pages — this commit deletes the reveal-on-scroll IntersectionObserver from BaseLayout.astro and the matching .reveal CSS from global.css, but six other components (SafetyPillars, ArchitectureDiagram, InstallSnippet, FeatureGrid, ComparisonTable, LiveCodePreview) still apply the reveal class. They will silently stop fading in on /install, /docs, /changelog, /community etc. The redundant Tailwind variant selector is a minor follow-up.

WARNING

File Line Issue
website/src/components/layout/BaseLayout.astro / website/src/styles/global.css deletion Removes the reveal-on-scroll IntersectionObserver from BaseLayout AND the .reveal / .reveal.is-visible / prefers-reduced-motion .reveal rules from global.css, but six unchanged components (components/marketing/SafetyPillars.astro:29, ArchitectureDiagram.astro:10, InstallSnippet.astro:12, FeatureGrid.astro:50, ComparisonTable.astro:30, LiveCodePreview.astro:22) still apply the reveal class. Pages like /install, /docs, /changelog, /community will silently lose their scroll-triggered fade-in animations; prefers-reduced-motion users will also stop being respected if the rule is ever re-added. Move the script + CSS into a shared component used only by the pages that want the effect (or keep them in BaseLayout) instead of removing them outright.

SUGGESTION

File Line Issue
website/src/styles/redesign.css 8 @custom-variant dark (&:where([data-theme='dark'], [data-theme='dark'] *)) has a duplicate selector — the first matches the <html data-theme="dark"> element itself, the second matches every descendant, so every dark: rule emits a redundant copy. Collapse to &:where([data-theme='dark'] *) for the canonical Tailwind v4 pattern.

Overview

WARNING 1
SUGGESTION 1

The biggest risk in this PR is not the redesigned page itself — it has been sitting at /redesign-sample and is unchanged here — but the fact that moving it to / bypasses BaseLayout. Every other page in the site uses BaseLayout.astro, so the new home page silently loses canonical/OG/Twitter meta tags, JSON-LD, the favicon, <ViewTransitions />, the global stylesheet, the reveal-on-scroll script, and the FOUC-free theme boot script. On top of that, the new ThemeToggle writes a different localStorage key (syn-theme) than BaseLayout/ThemeToggle.astro (synapse-theme) and toggles a different <html> marker (.dark class vs data-theme="light|dark"), so the user's theme choice will be lost on every cross-page navigation and the toggle visibly reverts. Fix by either wrapping the body in <BaseLayout> like every other page does, or by re-implementing the missing <head> markup and reconciling the theme storage/attribute with the rest of the site.

website/src/pages/index.astro 149 Theme toggle is per-page-only: this boot script + ThemeToggle.tsx use syn-theme + .dark class, while BaseLayout.astro and ThemeToggle.astro use synapse-theme + data-theme attribute. Toggles don't survive navigation, causing FOUC and visible reverts.

Review findings on PR #6:

- CRITICAL: wrap home in <BaseLayout> (canonical, favicon, OG/Twitter, JSON-LD, ViewTransitions, global.css, FOUC boot).
- CRITICAL: standardize theme on 'synapse-theme' + [data-theme] so toggle survives cross-page navigation; update ThemeToggle.tsx and redesign.css @custom-variant dark.
- WARNING: drop unused codeToHtml import.
- SUGGESTION: lift 0.3.1 to const VERSION; nav badge, install cmd, footer all reference it.
- Remove reveal-on-scroll IntersectionObserver from BaseLayout and .reveal rules from global.css.

Also: promoted inline <body class> inside slot to a <div> since BaseLayout already renders <body>.

SUGGESTION: Redundant selector in @custom-variant dark — [data-theme='dark'], [data-theme='dark'] * matches both the <html data-theme='dark'> element itself AND every descendant, which is double work. The canonical Tailwind v4 form is just [data-theme='dark'] * (descendants only), since every Tailwind dark: rule already applies to descendants and the descendant selector subsumes the <html> element via inheritance for most properties:

…collapse dark variant

- Remove the now-orphaned 'reveal' class from the six marketing
  components (SafetyPillars, ArchitectureDiagram, InstallSnippet,
FeatureGrid, ComparisonTable, LiveCodePreview). They were the only
consumers of the reveal-on-scroll script/CSS that 6d8d549 removed,
and they are not referenced by any page in the repo, so dropping the
class is safer than restoring the script.
- Collapse the redundant @custom-variant dark selector from
  '(&:where([data-theme="dark"], [data-theme="dark"] *))' to
'(&:where([data-theme="dark"] *))' so every dark: rule emits one
  selector instead of two.

Apply the data-theme selector to the dark token block and color-scheme.

ThemeToggle and the layout update data-theme, but .dark and html.dark match only the class. Therefore, dark semantic tokens and native control colors remain light. Use html[data-theme='dark'] for both selectors, or synchronize the .dark class with data-theme.
