Closes #1988

Summary

  • The installer bootstrap rejected an existing pnpm unless it could read a package.json named pnpm near the resolved command. A standalone pnpm, the single Mach-O/ELF executable that mise, asdf and pnpm's own installer provide, has no such file, so a working pnpm stopped the macOS installer with package engine evidence missing.
  • A Mach-O or ELF pnpm is now treated as standalone. It embeds its own Node runtime, so the package engine comparison against the user's Node does not apply. It must still report an exact stable --version and pass the same global add/bin capability checks before reuse.
  • Scripts and shims without a package still fail closed, as before.

Changes

File Change
scripts/installer-downloads.mjs standalonePnpm reads the resolved file's 4-byte header (Mach-O 32/64, universal, ELF); provePnpm accepts no package metadata only for that case and then requires a semver --version
tests/installer-posix-bootstrap.test.ts Standalone pnpm (Mach-O 64, universal, ELF; direct and symlinked like mise) is reused without download; bad version or missing global capability still blocks; a script without a package is not treated as standalone
docs/install-wizard.md Reuse rule documents the standalone case

Test plan

  • RED on main: both standalone tests fail in packageFor with the reported error.
  • GREEN: tests/installer-posix-bootstrap.test.ts 67/67; the CI installer suite list (install-wizard, installer-server, verify-package-files, installer-probes, installer-runner, installer-preflight, installer-windows-bootstrap) 251 pass, 0 fail, 15 skipped (native Windows lanes).
  • Not run: a native mise reproduction; covered through the public ensurePnpm interface with header fixtures.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • POSIX installers can now use standalone native pnpm executables when they report a valid stable version and support global installation.
    • Installers continue to verify package-engine compatibility when pnpm is installed with package metadata.
    • Script-based pnpm installations without package metadata remain unsupported.

…nstalls

A Mach-O or ELF pnpm embeds its own Node runtime and has no package.json; it skips the package engine check but must still prove an exact stable version and global add/bin capability. Scripts and shims without a package still fail closed. Closes #1988.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The POSIX installer now recognizes standalone Mach-O and ELF pnpm executables. It checks their reported version and global-install capabilities without package metadata. Package-backed pnpm retains its engine and version checks; scripts and shims without a package remain unsupported.

Native executable compatibility and validation
scripts/installer-downloads.mjs, tests/installer-posix-bootstrap.test.ts, docs/install-wizard.md
ensurePnpm detects Mach-O and ELF headers and allows recognized binaries to proceed without package metadata. The installer still checks the CLI version and global add/bin capabilities. Tests cover recognized binaries, invalid versions, missing capability evidence, and scripts without package metadata. The documentation describes these checks.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep package-backed native executables on the metadata check.

If a native pnpm executable has nearby pnpm package metadata, standalonePnpm(existing) still passes null to provePnpm. The installer then skips the package engine check and accepts a reported version that differs from the package version. Locate package metadata first. Skip its checks only when the metadata is absent and the executable has a recognized native header. Add a package-backed native fixture with mismatched metadata to cover this branch.
