[Automated Review] Requesting changes. Sending a native markdown block is the right fix, but the PR also adds a second rendering path: a 162-line Markdown→mrkdwn converter plus the marked dependency, used only for replies over 12,000 characters. That path behaves differently from the common one in formatting, link handling and mention safety. The shared splitter can produce one fence-balanced, truncated markdown block, which removes the need for the converter (see the comment on blocks.ts). Two existing tests also stopped testing what they claim (see blocks.test.ts).
Each finding below was checked with a scratch Vitest/tsc run against this PR's head (3487f6d).
Blockers: the duplicate rendering path, the length-dependent escaping, and the dead or weakened tests.

[Automated Review] Simpler fix: the shared splitter already covers this. The converter isn't needed.
splitIntoSlackSections takes maxChars and maxSections. With (text, MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARS, 1) it returns one body that is at most 12,000 characters, keeps fences balanced, and ends with the existing _...truncated — open the session to read the rest_ pointer (valid Markdown italics). It also returns [] for whitespace, so the placeholder still works:
function buildResponseBlocks(text: string): CompletionSlackBlock[] {
const [body] = splitIntoSlackSections(text, MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARS, 1);
if (!body) return [{ type: "section", text: { type: "mrkdwn", text: "_Agent completed._" } }];
return [{ type: "markdown", text: body }];
}I checked this against this branch. A heading followed by a 2,000-line ```ts block gives one 12,000-character body, an even number of fences, and the truncation marker. " \n " gives [], and short text comes back unchanged.
This removes mrkdwn.ts, mrkdwn.test.ts, the marked dependency, and this nested if/else (which checks text.trim() twice and passes "" to skip the converter). The cost is that the longest reply shown drops from about 60,000 characters (20 × 3,000) to 12,000. The splitter's docs already name View Session as the way to read the rest. If 12,000 is too low, post the overflow as follow-up thread messages, each one a markdown block from the same splitter. That is still far less code than keeping a second Markdown dialect in sync.

Done in a2e6698. buildResponseBlock is this snippet, and the converter, its tests and marked are removed. I accepted the 12,000-character cap, with the session pointer for the rest.

[Automated Review] Mention and link safety now depends on reply length.
mrkdwn.ts goes to real effort here: everything goes through escapeMrkdwnText, and LINKABLE_HREF_RE keeps [x](!here) from becoming a mention. That only applies to replies over 12,000 characters. Every other reply is sent as written. I checked this on this branch:
- short:
<!channel> [x](!here)→{"type":"markdown","text":"<!channel> [x](!here)"} - long: the same prefix →
<!channel> … x (!here)
Slack's markdown block reference doesn't say whether <!channel>, <@U…> or <#C…> are read inside these blocks. So either:
- the safety matters: the common path needs the same treatment, or a verified, documented guarantee that
markdownblocks ignore those sequences; or - it doesn't matter: most of the converter is guarding nothing.
Either way, one policy for every reply length, stated in one place, is much easier to reason about than having it depend on which side of 12,000 characters a reply lands.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done. I verified this live: in a markdown block, raw <!here>/<!channel> become broadcast elements, while [x](!here) stays a plain link. Every reply now goes through the shared stripBroadcastMentions before the split, so there is one policy for all lengths, documented in buildResponseBlock. e822de9 also fixes two bypasses in that helper: reassembly through <!<!here>here>, and labelled forms such as <!here|here>.

[Automated Review] This is a Slack platform limit, like SECTION_TEXT_MAX_CHARS, so it belongs next to that constant in packages/shared/src/slack/sections.ts, not in the completion builder. Right now SlackMarkdownBlock's doc comment in slack-blocks.ts points at a constant in completion/blocks.ts. The rule that "the response is the only markdown block this builder emits" is also only stated in a comment. Nothing enforces it if another markdown block is added later.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done in a2e6698. MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARS now sits next to SECTION_TEXT_MAX_CHARS in shared/src/slack/sections.ts, and SlackMarkdownBlock points there. "Only one markdown block" is enforced by building the reply once and by a test with every optional block populated.

[Automated Review] This copies the canonical link policy instead of reusing it. The comment says this is "the same set sanitizeLinks keeps", but that set is URL_LINK_RE in packages/shared/src/slack/mrkdwn.ts, and the two regexes already differ: this one excludes < from the destination ([^\s|<>]+) and the shared one doesn't ([^|>\s]+). Two regexes in different packages that must match, connected only by a comment, will keep drifting. Export one predicate (e.g. isLinkableSlackHref) from @open-inspect/shared/slack and use it in both places.

Moot now: mrkdwn.ts is removed, so nothing duplicates URL_LINK_RE.

[Automated Review] These switches don't actually narrow the token type. In marked 16.4.2, Token is MarkedToken | Tokens.Generic, and Generic has [index: string]: any. That's why every branch needs token.tokens ?? [], why Tokens.List/Tokens.Code need casts, and why token.href/token.text in renderInlineToken are any. I checked this with tsc on this branch: inside if (t.type === "link") on a Token, const n: number = t.href compiles. On a MarkedToken it's an error, and t.tokens is a non-optional Token[].
Narrowing once at the boundary (switch ((token as MarkedToken).type), or typing the helpers' parameters as MarkedToken) removes the casts and the ?? [] fallbacks, and gives you a real exhaustive switch.

[Automated Review] Only the first line of a list item gets the prefix and indentation. Later blocks in the same item land at column 0. Checked on this branch:
- para one\n\n para two\n\n ```\n code\n ```\n- next
→ • para one\npara two\n```\ncode\n```\n• next
So para two and the code block look like they sit outside the bullet. Continuation lines need LIST_INDENT.repeat(depth + 1) (or the prefix's width) applied. (This only matters if the converter stays; see the comment on blocks.ts.)

Moot now: the converter is removed. The markdown block renders list continuations itself.

[Automated Review] This hand-written decoder covers five entities, so anything else still shows literally. Checked on this branch: a b 'q' © → a b 'q' ©, which Slack displays as a b 'q' ©. The markdown block path renders these correctly, so the two paths disagree here too. Either decode entities fully (numeric and named) or drop the partial decoder and say in a comment which entities are supported. (This only matters if the converter stays.)

Moot now: the converter is removed, and the markdown block decodes entities itself.

[Automated Review] The next test, respects the section cap when a fence is split (sess-6, line 356; it's unchanged, so I can't comment on it directly), can no longer fail. Its input (a 9,000-character fenced block) is now under MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARS, so on this branch buildCompletionBlocks returns block types ['markdown', 'context', 'actions']. sectionTexts(blocks) is [], and the for loop runs zero assertions. Either size the input from MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARS and assert that response sections exist, or move this case to test splitIntoSlackSections directly, since that's what it covers.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done. The sess-6 section-cap test is removed along with the section path. The builder test now sizes its input from MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARS and asserts the cut, the session pointer and balanced fences. Section capping stays covered in sections.test.ts.

[Automated Review] This test now covers less than before. Its input now goes through markdownToMrkdwn, which turns ```ts into a bare ```. On this branch none of the resulting sections contain ```ts, so reopening a fence with its language tag (reopenPrefix) is no longer tested here. The hand-inflated sizes elsewhere in this block (8→16 paragraphs, 4000→13_000, 300→1,000 lines) point to the same problem: these tests depend on a magic threshold. Base the sizes on MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARS, or test the splitter directly. Also, the new "whitespace-only reply" test duplicates the existing still renders a placeholder for an empty response.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done. Sizes are derived from MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARS, and the duplicate whitespace test is gone. Fence-language reopen stays covered by sections.test.ts ("carries the fence language across a split"). It cannot happen with a single block.

Closes #2312
Summary
When a Slack session finished, the bot posted the agent's reply in
mrkdwnsection blocks. Agents write standard Markdown, so headings,**bold**, lists and[text](url)links showed up as literal syntax. The reply is now sent as Slack's nativemarkdownblock, which renders standard Markdown.buildResponseBlockcuts the reply with the shared splitter,splitIntoSlackSections(text, MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARS, 1), into one fence-balancedmarkdownblock. Text over Slack's 12,000-character cap ends with the existing session pointer. An empty reply still shows_Agent completed._.markdownblock and reading back the storedrich_text: Slack resolves raw<!here>/<!channel>inside these blocks to real broadcasts, while[x](!here)stays a plain link. Every reply goes through the sharedstripBroadcastMentions, the same always-on stripsanitizeAgentTextapplies to agent notifications. User mentions pass through unchanged, as before.stripBroadcastMentionsnow repeats until stable, so<!<!here>here>can't reassemble into<!here>, and it matches labelled forms such as<!here|here>. This also tightens the notify route.MARKDOWN_BLOCK_MAX_CHARSlives next toSECTION_TEXT_MAX_CHARSin@open-inspect/shared/slack. The reply is the message's onlymarkdownblock, because the cap is shared across all of them.The agent's own mid-run Slack posts (the notify route) are unchanged and still use mrkdwn sections.
