# Environment

The backend validates required environment variables on startup. Copy
`.env.example` to `.env` for local development and set `DATABASE_URL` to a
PostgreSQL connection string.

Required variables:

- `NODE_ENV`: `development`, `production`, or `test`
- `PORT`: HTTP port, defaults to `3000`
- `DATABASE_URL`: PostgreSQL connection string used by Prisma
